PA Supreme Court hears arguments over abortion funding

Wednesday, inside the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, justices listened to arguments to decide if tax dollars through Medicaid should pay for elective abortions in the state.
Justices listened to the case of Allegheny Reproductive Health Center V. PA Department of Human Services.
The case centers around whether mandated tax dollars should be used to pay for elective abortions.
Kathy Eisenberg, with Women’s Law Project, said, “We have the power to fight for a better future. We can fight back in the courts. We can fight back in the legislatures at the ballot boxes and in the streets and we must create a world where our daughters have more rights than we have now.”
Attorney Matt Haverstick said, “I think the issue, in this case, is really a straightforward one, and it has to do with funding. And it has to do with under what conditions the general assembly has to require to fund certain things.”
He said, “Fundamentally, the general assembly shouldn’t be required to fund everybody’s desire to exercise every right. We’d go broke if we did that.”
