Heres 5 Reasons Why It’s Wrong to Claim the Bible Justifies Abortion

Abortion proponents are increasingly invoking God and his Word to try and justify abortion. Here are just four examples from recent weeks:
- On September 26, 2022, Senator Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) said, “I trust women in their wisdom and their ability to sit with their own God, and if they choose, choose to sit with their pastor, to pray about that, and let their own conscience guide them. Even God gave us a choice.” (He echoed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s comment on abortion from last September, “I believe that God has given us a free will to honor our responsibilities.”)
- On September 15, 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) launched a billboard campaign in pro-life states, advertising that California was open for abortion business, which concluded, “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these,” a quote from Mark 12:31.
- On September 9, 2022, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough stated, “Jesus never once talked about abortion. Never once. And it was happening back in ancient times. It was happening back in his time. Never once mentioned it.”
- On August 26, 2022, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) stated, “The fact that this is such an assault on women of color and women — lower income families is just sinful. It’s sinful. It’s wrong that they would be able to say to women what they think women should be doing with their lives and their bodies. But it’s sinful, the injustice of it all.”
At the end of June, the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade and returned control of abortion to the political process. Ever since, appeals to Scripture, God, and explicitly religious themes seem to happen more frequently among abortion advocates.
