The UAE statement was made on WAM, a state-run news agency. It did not say where the Ghani family was inside the Middle Eastern country.

The news follows allegations by the Russian Embassy in Kabul that Ghani left the country armed with massive amounts of cash.

“The collapse of the regime … is most eloquently characterized by how Ghani escaped from Afghanistan: Four cars were filled with money; they tried to shove another part of the money into a helicopter but not everything fit. And some of the money was left lying on the tarmac,” Embassy spokesman Nikita Ischenko said.

Russia’s Ambassador to Afghanistan Dmitry Zhirnov told the Echo of Moscow radio station that “the situation in Kabul is better than it was under Ashraf Ghani.”
