Senator Hawley, May God's hand of favor rest and remain over you, your family, and your staff. I am praying that you will feel this presence and find strength and peace as you go about your day. I pray the Ephesians prayer that God, who is the so glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, would open your heart and understanding at every moment of decision so you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe him. I pray that He may cause you to recollect at every moment how Jesus is now far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else--not only in this world but also in the world to come. And that God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things -- and that this will be for the benefit of the church, which is made complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself. I pray that any pressure now be handed over and taken up by Lord Jesus, that the government may rest upon His shoulders. That if any have a need to know the decision or the coommunication, may the Holy Spirit remind all that Jesus has promised when we ask Him anything in His Name , He will do it. Senator, it is the Lord who has anointed and appointed you to continue in the good works he planned for you, and he is well pleased with you. I pray strength, endurance, patience, and perseverance, and strong presence and guidance from the Holy Spirit. Thank you for your admirable service.

I wrote this letter which at the time was sent to over 350 homes in June, 2009. George Tiller had a late-term abortion clinic in Wichita, KS, and was shot to death in June, 2009. This is my response, one woman who lives in Your beautiful rural area in central Kansas, and who is blessed by it. Wanda Nelson Dear Lord Jesus, June is my favorite month. In the mornings, when I open the house, the breeze is cool. I live in the country, and when I look out the window to the east, I see so many shades of green and gold and tan and black, level and undulating planes, the curved shapes of trees and the wispy shapes of grass and brome, bending to the will of the breeze. And there is space, the spacious quality that You, Lord, give for things to grow, to be, to know, to hope, to learn joy. This includes me and all things You made! But in this broken world, Lord, there is always the other side, as yesterday's news relays. Although I am certain he was not aware of it, yesterday was the last day of George Tiller's life. He was shot by a man in the foyer of the Wichita church he attended, during a worship service in which he had been ushering. This is an ELCA congregation, Lord, the same Lutheran denomination of which my long-term congregation is a part. He was a part of us, Lord! You are fully aware, Lord, that George Tiller, husband, father, grandfather, earned his living by aborting late-term fetuses. Initially, his death seemed to make him a hero to an emotionally charged public. If in some way his death makes him a hero, I must also consider the deaths of unwanted babies that were aborted at his clinic, Lord. Does an emotionally charged public regard them? How much reverence and honor for life is in their endings, Lord Jesus? George Tiller's journey is ended: theirs never began. I am intrigued by what "church" would have meant to George Tiller-and I admit I am standing far on the outside, peering in, Lord. I know people go to church for many reasons. The world recognizes the institutional church, a historic, socio-religious institution that attempts to hold itself apart from the world, even while it proposes to serve the world, but which is often influenced by the world in its response to it. But thankfully, Lord, inside the institutional church, there is the spiritual church, the dedicated believers in You, Lord Jesus, the remnant. To them, the institutional church is a communal means to worship You, to partake of Your sacraments, to express Your love to others and to witness to Your gospel. I wonder what Your church really meant to George Tiller. This is intriguing, Lord. This last week, a woman in our congregation died, Lord, one of Your children. She had never married; her immediate family was gone; the closest relations were cousins. She was in a nursing home, and the cousin who became her caretaker thought she had given up on life. Her constant prayer was, "Lord, help me," as she dwindled away. For five years, she prayed to You and prepared for death. And finally, as You know, the death for which she had prepared came. George Tiller didn't have that privilege. I wonder if anyone ever talked to a young George Tiller about seeking Your will in his medical occupation. Or if anyone ever suggested to him that his occupation might be completely outside of Your will, for in all that I think, imagine, read or even know about You, I cannot imagine You will abortion as a means of convenience. Did George Tiller ever consider this? I have no doubt that You died for George Tiller, just as You died for me, and for the man who held the gun. But none of us can continue in our sin as usual, accepting Your grace while throwing our sin in Your face, no matter what our sin. You are a gracious God, more than we can imagine. But it is clear that when we accept salvation through You and receive the Holy Spirit as Your gift to us, You want us to repent and obey. You are infinitely patient with us and offer Your salvation as long as we have breath, but if we do not repent of our sin and believe that Your sacrifice is our only hope of salvation by the time we die, we face condemnation. You tell us this plainly in John 3:16-18: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. To prepare for death and long for reunion with Father God and You, and even reunion with family believers who have died, is a condition of hope and comfort, even joy. But to meet death suddenly in the foyer of a church or on a street or wherever it is, without turning our lives to You, is eternally fatal. No one deserves to die as George Tiller did, Lord Jesus. For one thing, it voids any chance You may have used to restore his life, if indeed, he were condemned. I have no idea what Mr. Tiller's relationship was with You. But I know the Father as a Creator God who establishes and offers life: it is not His will to destroy it. I know whenever we undertake to destroy human life, it is sin. When we have intent to destroy life, we assume Your role, You who give life and, yes, who even give death. I perceive this applies to the man who held the gun yesterday, as well as to George Tiller. There are lessons for us to learn, Lord. Deep inside, we know what our relationship is with our Father God and with You and Holy Spirit. I know people who believe You have touched them personally. I know people who seem to think they will establish a relationship with You someday. I even know people who consider all of this God-stuff and You as irrelevant. What we believe about You does not change the outcome: we each will meet You when we die. We may prepare for it, or we may not. You offer us immense love, grace and mercy. In return, You ask for our love, our faith, our obedience. So be it. What am I, what are you, fellow intercessor, offering Him in response? Wanda Nelson

Thank You, Lord, for the privilege of praying for Josh Hawley. I pray You continue to protect Senator Hawley and his family as he stands firm against the attacks of the enemy (Ephesians 6:10-13). Continue to protect, and build even stronger, Mr. Hawley's convictions and courage to resist manipulation and peer pressure (Proverbs 29:25, 2 Timothy 1:7). Bless him with Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding (Isaiah 11:2) and Your will as he stands firmly in support of the sanctity of life, families, divine order and morality in our nation. Shield him as he uncovers and exposes corruption, deceit and lies (Proverbs 26). Bless Josh Hawley and his family with wise, godly counsel and God-fearing advisors (Proverbs 24). I pray for abundant financial support as Representative Hawley continues to fight to keep America "One Nation Under God". In Jesus name, Amen.
