“You can’t legislate morality!” Is this true?
“You can’t legislate morality!” Is this true?
By David Kubal
How many times through the years have you heard this statement? I have heard Christians say this countless times, without ever considering whether it is true or not. In order to verify or reject the thought, we must define morality, which is “the belief about what is right behavior and what is wrong behavior” (The Merriam Webster Dictionary). With this definition in mind, let me ask a few questions: Do we as a nation believe it is right to lie? Do we as a nation believe it is permissible to commit murder? Would we, as parents, give our children pornography? Of course not, because we believe these actions are wrong, and so we have laws stating that they are wrong.
So, do we legislate morality? YES, of course we legislate morality. Jesus himself emphasized this in the model prayer, which we call “The Lord’s Prayer.” We pray, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:10). It is our obligation to pray, act, and make every attempt to legislate what we know our eternal, all-knowing God holds to be right and what He defines as wrong.
Indeed, we can and do legislate morality. That is precisely what civilized nations do. Government is one of the institutions created by God to bring order to His creation in view of a fallen world. God’s law, as given to Moses, enabled him to turn an unruly mob of ex-slaves into an organized nation. And today, for the Church to accept the thought that we do not legislate morality would be to abdicate our role as stewards of God’s creation.
Join me in praying for our candidates and ballot measures, so that God’s moral values will be expressed in this year’s election outcomes.
