“When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” (Proverbs 29:2)

As we enter this critical year for our nation, we, the people who are called by God’s name, must be involved in the political process, so that our “groans” can be turned to “rejoicing”. And here’s why.

First, our Founders made it clear that our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people; for example:

George Washington, our first president, said in his farewell speech, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable    supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.”¹

John Adams, our second president, wrote, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”²

Also, the Constitution was “ordained and established” by the People of the United States as stated in the preamble.

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

Now, whatever is “ordained and established” has to be maintained. We see this very clearly in two examples:

• A marriage between two people is “ordained and established” but if it is not maintained, the initial love soon grows cold, leading to an eventual divorce.
• A house is “ordained and established” when it is built or purchased, but if the owner fails to maintain it, it also soon deteriorates.

Consequently, “We the People of the United States” who are called by God’s name; that is to say, Christians, must do two things to maintain our Constitution:

• We must live our lives as a testimony of Jesus Christ in our hearts so that we can be seen to be a “moral and religious” people.
• We must fulfill our responsibilities to our nation by being involved in the political processes so that “moral and religious” leaders come into office at all levels of government. The primary way to do this is to VOTE in local, state and national elections.
