I Prayed have prayed
Heavenly Father, grow communities of faith in our public schools. Bless Christian teachers with encouragement and hope.

Schools across the country spent this last week honoring teachers during the nation’s teacher appreciation week. Here at IFA we are passionate about praying for teachers and students, and the Lord continually puts education issues on our hearts as needing prayer. We were encouraged to find out about this excellent ministry that encourages and empowers teachers to pray. It’s called Teachers Who Pray and was featured in Christianity Today, in an article we are excerpting here.

Marilyn Rhames had made it. A journalist in New York City, she worked as a reporter for People and Time magazines. Then she started teaching Sunday school. “I discovered how much fun it could be and how good I was in front of kids,” she said. But pivoting her career to full-time education felt overwhelming—especially for the pay. Then came 9/11.

In the wake of the terrorist attacks, Rhames felt her priorities recalibrate. “Lord, if I had died today, if I was in those towers, would I be doing what I felt was significant?” she remembered praying. “As much as I loved being a reporter, it had lost its appeal, in terms of changing the world. After 9/11, I said ‘Okay, Lord, I’m done. I’m going to be a teacher.’”

A Chicago native, Rhames soon returned back to the Windy City and moved into the classroom. In 2011, she founded Teachers Who Pray, a national organization that seeks to support educators’ spiritual and professional needs through retreats, conferences, and curricula.

“We want to create communities of faith among educators and mobilize them to deeply love God and deeply love the students he’s given us to teach,” said Rhames. “If we do those two things, we will transform the educational experience, especially for children who are from vulnerable families and underserved communities.”…

“About 90 percent of children in America are educated through public education. It’s America’s most fertile mission field. It’s also the largest mission field we have for professionals. There are 3.5 million K-12 teachers in America, which makes up 2.7 percent of the workforce.”

Thank God for Marilyn and her burden for prayer to be raised for teachers and students in our education system. I join her and others in praying for this critical area in our society and may we not forget national, state and local leaders in our prayers that Father will bless and guide them as well. In His Name, Amen!.

there is so much we hear about low test scores, gross inappropriate sex classes, the twisting of history even including a textbook slamming our president. My daughter is a fourth grade teacher. I know how much she loves her students, how parents want their kids in her classroom. Yes it is a Christian school where prayer over all the issues is a given, but this article is showing that while all the bad is going on in our system at a tsunami rate it seems, I agree that prayer is the only hope. It may be too late in some respects of the overall national state of affairs, but I hold up in prayer those individuals not corrupted and who are doing a tough job [that THEY love I hope]. May they be a true source of godliness and a bridge for the children they have the power and call from God to reach.

I am subbing in a Middle School in Spanish and Social Studies! I am praying that a Spanish speaker will come forward to help the students. Their teacher is out for the rest of the year!

Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your call to Marilyn Rhames to found Teachers Who Pray. How desparately we need teachers, parents, and students who pray for every school and teacher at every level of education-from our elementary schools to the highest university in the land. Call them to prayer every day until Your Spirit is outpoured and a mighty awakening transforms our schools in every way for Your glory. Thy kingdom come, in Jesus’ Name! Amen
