Wildfires have devastated the island of Maui, prompting aid and prayer from the rest of the nation. Was this tragedy avoidable?
From The Wall Street Journal. During the 2019 wildfire season, one of the worst Maui had ever seen, Hawaiian Electric concluded that it needed to do far more to prevent its power lines from emitting sparks.

The utility examined California’s plans to reduce fires ignited by power lines, started flying drones over its territory and vowed to take steps to protect its equipment and its customers from the threat of fire.
Nearly four years later, the company has completed little such work. Between 2019 and 2022, it invested less than $245,000 on wildfire-specific projects on the island, regulatory filings show. It didn’t seek state approval to raise rates to pay for broad wildfire-safety improvements until 2022, and has yet to receive it.
Now, the company is facing scrutiny, litigation and a financial crisis over indications that its power lines might have played a role in igniting the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century. The blaze has caused at least 110 deaths, destroyed the historic town of Lahaina and resulted in an estimated billions of dollars in damage.
The fire’s cause hasn’t been determined, but mounting evidence suggests the utility’s equipment was involved. One video taken by a resident shows a downed power line igniting dry grass along a road near Lahaina. A firm that monitors grid sensors reported dozens of electrical disruptions in the hours before the fire began, including one that coincided in time with video footage of a flash of light from power lines.
Hawaiian Electric said it would investigate any role its infrastructure may have played and cooperate with a separate probe into the fire launched last week by the Hawaii attorney general. …
The utility has long been a force in Hawaii politics and business. In the wake of the fire, its finances are reeling. Its stock has plunged 49% this week, and its credit rating was downgraded to junk by S&P.
Hawaiian Electric is the latest utility in the Western U.S. to struggle following large wildfires, many of which have been sparked by utility equipment in recent years. PG&E, the Northern California utility giant, sought bankruptcy protection in 2019 after its power lines ignited a series of major fires, including the 2018 Camp Fire that killed 84 people and destroyed the town of Paradise, Calif. That had been the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history until the Maui fire. …
The growing risk of wildfire on Maui had been known for years. The number of acres burned on the island soared to 39,000 in 2019, from 150 in 1999, according to data compiled by the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, a nonprofit that works with government agencies and the public.
Several reports released by the group and others in recent years have said the danger is increasing, in part, because of invasive plants that have overtaken former sugar and pineapple plantations. Roughly one-quarter of state land in Hawaii is now covered by invasive grasses and shrubs, according to a study by the University of Hawaii and think tank East-West Center. …
Renewables push
Former regulators and energy company officials said the utility was focused at that time on procuring renewable energy. Hawaii has been on a push to convert to renewables since 2008, when a run-up in oil prices sent electrical rates at Hawaiian Electric — which relied on petroleum imports for 80% of its energy supply — through the roof. In 2015, lawmakers passed legislation mandating that the state derive 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2045, the first such requirement in the U.S.
The company dove into reaching the goals, stating in 2017 that it would reach the benchmark five years ahead of schedule.
In 2019, under pressure to replace the output of two conventional power plants set to retire, the company sought to contract for 900 megawatts of renewable energy, the most it had pursued at any one time.
“You have to look at the scope and scale of the transformation within [Hawaiian Electric] that was occurring throughout the system,” said Mina Morita, who chaired the state utilities commission from 2011 to 2015. “While there was concern for wildfire risk, politically the focus was on electricity generation.” …

Lord, I pray for the corrupt liaisons between government officials in Hawaii (at all levels) and large corporations and prospects of financial gain and career promotions. I ask for elected and appointed officials with integrity to care for the well being of people and the natural environment more than for personal gain. Let Your righteousness and justice prevail, and may your Kingdom come there on earth as it is in Heaven. May corruption be exposed, and rooted out of the land. May your truth and Holy Spirit comfort those who have experienced loss of loved ones and property, and lead them to the truth of the Gospel. Amen
If this is a repeat of Jezabel and Ahab demonic assault with stealing land for greed and control with illegally spilled blood as in the Old Testament story, I would ask for a response of intense intercession to expose and bring justice in God’s Issachar timing of course. We are one nation under God, and we are now in synergy of the ages where there is exponential increasing unity and power from the ekklesia. The devil has overplayed his hand and there is and will continue to be massive exposure here in Jesus’s name.
Think of people being burned alive in their cars that they are trapped- sitting on roads.. think of the children’s bodies that have been mutilated by doctors whose souls and hearts have been jaded over by some sociopathic niceness that is really acquiescence to political correctness-, in order to avoid the discomfort of embracing really the positive stress that it takes to forge the courage to walk through the battle.. because they get paid so much per body that they terminate. Think of the confusion that each child that has been exposed to this evil insanity in school rooms… during formative years.. which, – in the time frame of a child’s life.. each moment, each hour, each day, each year-is much longer to them in their young minds… then to us adults as we know, as we grow older-,time.. fleeting time races by unconstrained.

It has been stated in these columns, I think it was yesterday.. that God’s prophecy whose time clock is now ticking down.. obviously will not be altered by our prayers-, and that these cataclysmic events which are now unfolding upon us-, will not be altered.. and while I honor and respect and have no intention of questioning the inerrancy of God’s Word-,and how our sin has brought this upon ourselves.. I also understand and remember that as we are called to occupy and represent Christ here on Earth we are also called to be courageous in our stand against evil.. remember God may have chosen Israel.. but America chose God.. and that first 50 years of America’s flourishing life-, where she surpassed all the other nations on the planet-,in every aspect possible.. were a blessing that manifested because as Alex de Tocqueville said..” America is great-,because America is good”. I’m not saying anyone here is a coward.. Or heaven forbid that should be assigned to leadership here at Intercessors for America.. What I am saying is that human beings bend in that direction under the weight of the ongoing fear-, torment- and oppression. I have no false impression that somehow we can eternally maintain heroism in the face of children being burned alive and families being decimated and our country being lost.. but let us also not be politically correct shills that begin to resemble our enemy more than we resemble the image of Christ- which has been forged Upon Us in His unfathomable sacrifice for us, – and in this current furnace of torment
Heavenly Father, we lift up the people in Lahaina to You and those whom You have sent to help, We ask for comfort and the peace of Jesus to inhabit, especially in those whom have lost loved ones. Psalms 34:18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. We thank You for Your promises and faithfulness both now and in the days ahead. Holy Spirit counsel at this most difficult time, bringing forth God’s most precious word. Let hope arise and the Kingdom of God shine in even the smallest details, that All will know of Your great love. May this community come together in one accord and glorify Your Holy name. It seems to me that our brothers and sisters here-, the leadership of this platform, are hesitant to embrace the uglier aspects of Satan’s forces against us-,that have been implemented through the structure of our government- and utilities and culture.. while they have been very good about reporting on big Pharma- big Tech, and corrupted government.. maybe it is a mindset of not overreacting and thereby presenting a alarmist mentality to the public ,,which I understand.. however I concur with you that Grassroots conservative Christian based information platforms , like Mike Adams platform-,brighteon.com, much like the one you shared.. Real Raw news.. is willing to present the things we may not want to know-, but must deal with.
I have even seen trusted servants in a church I used to attend-, with a military and law enforcement and fire department background-, that also handled the security for that church-, among various maintenance duties.. and host of other responsibilities- get angry when I mildly suggested such things- this was about 5 years ago.. obviously before covid.. it is obviously, to those that are informed.. a fear-based response, and not critical thinking.
Let us not be too careful in balancing our thinking towards being quote unquote “safe”..
