I Prayed have prayed

By David Kubal

I talked with a group of millennial leaders this weekend. They were ordained pastors in an evangelical denomination. As we spoke, I realized that, during this election season, there is great need is to pray for the Church that it has a clear vision for godly government. Let me explain:

• In this day, if you asked most evangelicals to describe God’s view of marriage, I believe they would say: God created marriage between one man and one woman; marriage is the bedrock of our culture; godly husbands and wives regularly pray together; and a godly marriage is between equally yoked believers, etc. In other words, they would have a fully developed understanding of biblical marriage.

• In addition, if you asked most evangelicals how they see God’s view of the Church, I believe they would say: The Church is the Bride of Christ. It is meant to be salt and light for culture, to make disciples of all nations, to express the gifts of the Spirit, etc. In other words, they would have a fully developed biblical view of the characteristics and activities of the Church.

• What about government? During the Reformation, it was revealed to Martin Luther that God designed three institutions: marriage, government, and the Church. These three Divine institutions were created with specific roles to play in creation. God created marriage to care for our personal lives, government to bring order to civilization, and the Church—preeminent above the other two—to shepherd our spiritual lives. Yet, if you asked most evangelicals their views on godly government, I believe they would give blank stares or say, “I don’t think the Church should be involved in politics.”

It is time to wake up believers—and pray that God would restore a fresh vision to the Church of godly government. Let’s pray through passages like Isaiah 33:22, Romans 13:1, Micah 5:15, Jeremiah 18:7-10.
