Trypraying is a 7 day prayer guide for people who are not religious and who don’t do church. It began life as a booklet, but has become a church project and is now a multi-church project.  It has been used across a number of cities in the UK and is now available in the US.

Wilson was not a believer.  However his wife was and she brought a copy of the trypraying booklet home and left it on their coffee table. He said, “I eventually read the booklet through all at one go rather than over seven days.  At the end I simply looked up at the ceiling and said, ‘Hello!’  That was my prayer and the beginning of my journey to faith in Christ.”

The booklet has themes from the scriptures, honest-to-God prayers that a decent self-respecting agnostic can pray and stories of answered prayer. As well as things a person can do it also has short articles on issues like unanswered prayer, suffering, evidence for the resurrection. The main thing is that it is an explanation and exposure to the gospel so people run a high risk of becoming Christians if they use it!

“I was given the book by my aunt some years ago. I was trying to find my faith at that point.  I read through the booklet and thought, ‘Right, I’ve nothing to lose.’ So I gave it a go.  Life changed. I started to go to church. I passed my copy onto a friend who has also started to come to the church. There is not a day goes by now that I don’t pray.” Lindsay.

As a church project it’s simple.  One week everyone in the church gets a copy and is encouraged to use it themselves.  The next week, the idea is to look for a God created opportunity to give it to a friend or neighbor with a few words of encouragement: ‘Perhaps you would like to try praying for a week and see what happens in your life.’  So, the project for a church is simple: one week ‘use it’ the next week ‘lose it.’

Paul had difficulties.  His wife had died and things had taken a downward turn. He got hold of a copy of the trypraying booklet and put it into practice. When many churches in a city all do this at the same time, the whole thing gets ramped up and can be put into the public space with advertising, banners, bill boards, bumper stickers etc. The logo is a simple, visible invitation to do life with God. Interest in the US is growing, with three cities where there are embryonic multi-church projects this fall: Cleveland, OH; Longmont, CO; and Washington, D.C.
