TOBY MAC’S SON’S DEATH SHOULD WAKE THE CHURCH UP ABOUT THE OPIOID CRISIS
Some years ago, TobyMac very kindly embraced my idea to hold youth crusades in San Diego and came alongside me to offer his talent, grace and prayers. He worked tirelessly, was great at what he did, and reached thousands of kids for Christ. When one enters into the trenches with you to support your idea, it is very easy to feel a certain amount of fondness and affection for them, and that is certainly how I felt and feel about Toby. I am eternally grateful to him.
HAS THE OPIOID CRISIS TOUCHED YOUR FAMILY? YOU? LEAVE A COMMENT—LET US KNOW HOW TO PRAY FOR YOU.
That is why Toby’s nightmare, the loss of his son, Truett, hits particularly hard. Toby loved his boy and was a family man. It is my hope and prayer that in this long night of the soul, the one he is suffering through at this very moment, that he finds hope and healing in the arms of our heavenly Father who knows what is like to lose a son.
Truett died of an accidental drug overdose and fentanyl was involved. Opioids are an American tragedy that, I’m afraid, may get lost in these tumultuous, news-heavy times. I’m also concerned that people may feel that the opioid crisis is just an extension of the drug scene that started has been a part of our national conversation since the late 1960s. It is not. This is different.
The opioid crisis is rolling through American communities like a fast-moving plague. More than 47,000 Americans died in 2017 alone. Multiply that by the number of each victim’s family members and it is easy to see the wake of destruction is historic. But it doesn’t stop there. Millions of people are battling crushing opioid addictions right now. In 2015, 1.2 million women and nearly 1 million men addicted. The numbers are likely greater today. The crisis is one of the worst drug crisis in American history, causing more deaths annually than car crashes or guns, and making orphans of thousands of children. The incidents of running into someone who has been affected is growing. A woman who worked at my church’s K-12 academy just recently lost a family member to opioid overdose. It’s everywhere. America is losing nearly 200 people every day.
One of the catastrophes of the phenomenon is that it carries with it the judgment of many in our culture — those who believe that only druggies die of a drug overdose. As many of you may know, opioids are largely found in prescribed painkillers, which means that the crisis is so insidious it is making addicts out of people who have never taken a recreational drug before.
I am praying that the churches of America will begin to prepare themselves in a way that takes seriously its impact on our communities. We will need to offer spiritual and practical support for the coming wave of people who will look to the church for help. We need to pray for our leaders and legislators. If Truett’s death can serve to ignite us all into action and bring hope and healing to the masses, well, I hope my friend, Toby, can take some solace in that.

To the Toby Mac family…Truett’s family:
I know your pain and I’ve journeyed down the path you’re on. There are no words to comfort…there are no words to explain…there are simply…no words. It’s been 2 years and 5 months since my 22 year old son died of an opioid overdose.
My heart breaks for you all. I find comfort in the arms of Jesus and I’m determined to keep my eyes focused on Him as I continue down this path of living without my son. I now know grace in pain. I now know the peace that passes all understanding. He really doesn’t leave you or forsake you….and somehow….there is joy in the mourning. Praying for you guys and holding you in my heart.
May God continue to bring you great comfort & May lives be changed by their untimely death. Big Hugs ❤️
Lord God, by your mighty hand, please take this hand of Death off this country that we invited in with Roe vs Wade. Save us from the spirit of suicide, the spirit of sorcery (drugs) and the spirit of murder of abortion. We plead with you to right our wrongs and kick out the devil that we have let in. Wake up the church to be your hands and feet to minister to those afflicted with addiction. May those who are in trouble turn to you not a bottle of pills, may they call out to you and know that you hear them. May the love of Jesus be known to them, may they let you in, the Savior of us all. In Jesus name, Amen
“When you leave my paths, a voice behind will say, No, this is the way, walk ye in it.” Oh, would to GOD, we all would be quick to hear the whisper of the Holy Spirit as He seeks to guide our steps. That pause in your heart, that restlessness in your spirit, that feeling that maybe this is not the right thing to do, that is GOD telling us to STOP! Like crossing a street: Stop! Look both ways! before you cross the street. I know of one who ignored the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit warning, and that ended in tragedy. How much we ALL need to draw close to GOD in these evil days, so that we can hear HIS warnings and avoid danger! What a tragic loss to lose a beloved son–this was not GOD’s will for that family.
God, please heal the broken hearts of Toby, his wife, and family.
Father, we pray for those who are addicted to pain killers. May they not feel ashamed but step out for help. May they not feel alone but surrounded by caring people who will help them. Help them with their pain because severe pain is so hard to function with. May they look to you most if all and find their help in you.
Heavenly Father, I pray for Your peace to embrace the family. We are thankful knowing Your compassion, Your goodness in all through all situations compels response and transformation.
Open our eyes to see, hearts to receive truth. Provide wisdom, stirring community that allows Holy Spirit, Your life, the Presence of our Almighty breaking bondages of addiction, restoring life. The testimony of You Lord, Your Kingdom for Your Glory and Honor.
