The House has taken bipartisan action on TikTok. Are this app’s days in the U.S. numbered?

From The Wall Street Journal. The House voted overwhelmingly to approve a bill on Wednesday that would ban TikTok from operating in the U.S. or force a sale, with lawmakers largely shrugging off a last-minute lobbying push by the Chinese-controlled service and setting the stage for a final showdown in the Senate, where lawmakers have been cooler on the legislation.

Find out when your state prays.

The measure passed the House 352 to 65, with one member voting present, showing broad bipartisan support for cracking down on TikTok over national-security concerns.

The short-video app has faced scrutiny over the way its algorithm works to select content for users, both on sensitive issues such as teen depression as well as on global debates such as the Israel-Hamas war.  U.S. officials say TikTok’s ownership potentially gives Beijing a way to collect data on Americans and influence public opinion, driving years of efforts to crack down on the app and culminating in the new legislation.

Opponents of the bill said the government shouldn’t ban businesses and raised free-speech concerns. They also said TikTok has taken steps to address concerns about its ownership, including ensuring all U.S. user data is stored in an Oracle cloud, not overseas, and that fears about the service are overblown. …

The legislation calls for parent company ByteDance to divest itself of TikTok or the platform would be banned from app stores and web-hosting services in the U.S.  ByteDance would have a little more than five months from the enactment of the bill to comply.

“This bill is not about censorship, it’s about the inverse of censorship, which is propaganda and foreign propaganda pitting Americans against Americans or deprioritizing certain hashtag subject matter that is problematic” for Beijing, said Rep. Mike Gallagher (R., Wis.) who wrote the bill with the White House and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D., Ill.).

Lawmakers and administration officials have expressed worries that ByteDance would give U.S. users’ data to China’s government. The company has said it hasn’t gotten any such requests and wouldn’t comply if it did. …

The bill now heads to the Senate, where its fate is more uncertain. Asked how the chamber would handle the measure, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) has declined to say whether he would bring it up for a vote. Schumer said he would consult with Democratic committee chairmen “to see what their views would be.” President Biden has said he would sign the bill if it reached his desk.

TikTok, accessed by more than 170 million Americans, has fended off past efforts to rein in the app. In 2020, then-President Donald Trump tried to ban the app via an executive order. Courts blocked that attempt. In recent days the presumptive GOP presidential nominee has criticized the new legislation, indicating his position had flipped.

“There’s a lot of good and there’s a lot of bad with TikTok,” Trump said on CNBC. …

Given this bill’s significant implications for our national security, you can play a crucial role in raising awareness. Pass this article along to your friends and family!

great but what about facebook who is guikty on some of this as well? Father please insure that Facebook and Zuckerberg receive just judgment as well and are forced to make changes that support unbiased newstreams and become more supportive of helping youth overcome internet addiction, and feature more supportive streams in antuli bulkying, and support of intellectual pursuits learning studying, getting good grades, etc, and becoming ethical moral responsible adults instead of digging them in deeper into internet addiction and zombieism mind shaping with questionable ethics. FB supposedly supported Biden’s election exponentially financially and with their biased newstreams and also refused to publish the truth about the Hunter Bidrn laptop. I feel that all social media should legally be forced to remain politucally unbiased and be banned from financially supporting either party.

I can get tik Tok off my phone and I didn’t even put it in. At present it seems everything Chinese should be banned. But in order to do that we need congress to repent for allowing so much harm into our nation. But the the church has been way too quiet.

Dear LORD, thank You for wisdom and insight concerning “back doors” with this app. I ask that worship of this app would be diminished greatly and instead the worship of You be dramatically increased. May the enticing spirit of social media instead be replaced with the sound stewardship of reaching others for Jesus Christ. Let the desire of being seen by others on this social media be replaced with the desire to seek Your face. All these things I ask in Jesus mighty name. Amen.

TikTok needs to be banned. Yes small business has been able to grow, however, there are other media’s out there. Anyone with children that have been on TikTok know the effects on our young people. The children are not using the platform to grow business. Adults there are other means. Let’s protect our children.

Hopefully, the Senate will see this national security issue for what it is. Allowing a social media site to be used in America to be used by Americans, knowing that China is using it to spy on the people of America, is totally unacceptable. Lord Jesus, by your grace and mercy, let the Senate wake up to the fact that Tik Tok is indeed dangerous to our national security. may Your will prevail in this . Thank you, Jesus.

Totally agree with you, Fran, and Anthony…it needs banned, if it isn’t bought by someone trustworthy to keep it safe for America. I feel like Kevin O’Leary would be a good choice if he would be willing to buy it… I feel like he might be a trustworthy person since he seems to be, from what I can tell lately, on the right side of things-I don’t know enough about him to be totally confident, but I saw him comment on the news against what New York State is doing against Trump, and that he will not invest there. Hopefully President Trump will stop saying the opposite of what he said before, as before it was him who was warning against TikTok. I support him totally and he was and will be a wonderful President but I do not like this part about him. I can tell it’s just because he wants to get back at Facebook, and I understand it and maybe even understand his reasonings in a way, but in this instance, he’s wrong to do a 180 and say he wants it to stay. I hope and pray he backs off from this it’s not looking good for him and Kelly Ann Conway to do this-if there’s anybody who has his ear from IFA PLEASE convey this to him.

I feel it sad that Tik Tok is truly bad for our children, but yet this “president” posts on it constantly…”Do as I say ,not as I do tyranny”. .
