I Prayed have prayed

I was pedaling away on the bike at the gym the other day, and one of my fellow fitness enthusiasts asked me, “Have you decided who you are going to vote for?” With a need of oxygen in my body, I wasn’t in the best state to explain to him my point of view. But, I can tell you that Scripture is clear who should be our next president: “But select [for yourself] capable men from all the people – men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain…” (Ex. 18:21 NIV).

In this passage, the Lord clearly lays out the four qualifications of leaders: capable, God fearing, trustworthy, and honest. First, they need to have a proven track record of accomplishment, not just politicians that can talk politics, but individuals who that have proven they are capable of producing results. Just being capable isn’t enough; they need to exhibit the humility that comes with the understanding that they answer to a power higher than themselves. Arrogance is blinding and has been the downfall of many. They need to be trustworthy, so that when given an opportunity to do right, they do not squander it. Finally, they need to hate receiving — and to see others receiving — that which does not belong to them.

As we Christians pray and consider who deserves our vote for each position in our respective jurisdiction, let us intercede that the Lord would provide for us candidates that clearly demonstrate these characteristics. These four values must supersede their understanding and ability to articulate their positions on issues.
