DAY 1:
THE FEAR OF THE LORD

How can we pray effectively for good government based on righteousness and justice? Explore and pray through God’s Word for government that will honor Him.

Read Isaiah 11:1-4.

We must pray that the Fear of the Lord would mark every public official who serves in government. We cannot judge by what we see with our natural eyes or hear with our natural ears. Rather, it will be through the Fear of the Lord that citizens and leaders alike can rightly discern the purposes of God and pray effectively. According to Isaiah 11:1-4, the Fear of the Lord is what provides the wisdom, understanding, godly counsel, and knowledge to rightly discern what is true and eternal. It also provides a level of accountability—reminding all elected officials that they must answer to the Lord for how they serve their constituents. Let us pray that the Fear of the Lord would overshadow them, guiding and directing their words and actions. Let’s also pray that those around them would provide godly counsel and wise direction. Our intercession can pave the way for these leaders to hear the voice of the Spirit, to know the Fear of the Lord, and to do what is right in the sight of God and man.

Pray for God to move in the men and women in office, that they might know and walk in the Fear of the Lord:

Heavenly Father, we come to you today to lift up those who are serving our government as leaders. We ask that the Spirit of the Lord would rest upon each of them; the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord (Is 11:1-2). We pray that they would be aware and cognizant of Your Presence and Your Kingdom rule (Jer 9:23-24). We pray that they would make every effort to make their calling and election sure, knowing that they must ultimately answer to You for their choices and their witness (2 Pt 1:10). May they be free from the fear of man so that they can follow Your voice and Your ways (Prv 29:25). May they acknowledge their need for Your grace, knowing that their works are dead without You (2 Tm 1:9). We pray that those whom You have specifically called in this hour would persevere in the midst of trials or setbacks and press on toward the goal to win the prize for which You have called them (Phil 3:13-14). In Jesus’ name. Amen.
