I Prayed have prayed
Father, we pray that You would help us to remember the true meaning of this holiday. Help us not to view it as a simple three-day weekend, Lord, but to remember those who gave their lives to preserve our freedom.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

This Memorial Day weekend, it is important for us to remember why we celebrate the holiday and what it represents.

From NCPR. Nassau County – just east of New York City on Long Island- is home to more than 40,000 veterans, one of the highest populations in the state. While the county has traditionally commemorated Memorial Day with parades and little plastic American flags in people’s yards, county leaders have bigger plans this year.

Do you want State Prayer Alerts?

“We’re going to sound the sirens in Nassau County,” County Executive Bruce Blakeman said at a May news conference. “And we’re going to ask everybody to stop what you’re doing for 50 seconds at 12 noon and 6:00 p.m. — 50 seconds representing the 50 stars on our flag — and just stand at attention.”

Blakeman said firehouse alarms will blare and emergency vehicles will blast their sirens. Church bells will ring. Even buses will pull over for the two moments of silence. And he wants residents to participate, too….

Blakeman said the initiative is part of an effort to return Memorial Day to its original meaning – a somber day of memory for fallen service members….

The coordinated county-wide moments of silence might be a first for the nation according to Blakeman. He said he was inspired by a trip to Israel on its Memorial Day, where he saw residents stop whatever they were doing when the sirens sounded….

Nassau County’s effort to restore the original meaning behind Memorial Day isn’t the first. Veterans groups have for years wanted Congress to change the law that sets Memorial Day as the last Monday in May. They instead want it to always be May 30, regardless of when it falls during the week.

“It would encourage people to really think of Memorial Day as not just a three-day weekend,” said John Raughter of the American Legion, “but as a day to honor the more than one million men and women who died in America’s wars since the Revolution.”

Raughter said moving the date would make the holiday feel less like a vacation….

Will you spend this Memorial Day honoring those who gave their lives? Share your prayers for our fallen service members in the comments.

I lift up all who have made the sacrifice of their lives while defending our country, our freedoms, our lives at home and abroad. I am also remembering those like my uncle Samuel Bert Miller, who came home but sacrificed youth, vigor, and sobriety. God bless all our service men and women and the loved ones they left behind.

That is a good point to remember the sacrifice of those who returned from serving our country for freedoms sake. Thank you Samuel Bert Miller.

It’s pouring rain in Twin Falls, Idaho. Maybe God is also tired of us treating it like a vacation day, rather than a day of remembrance.

Prayer to a nation that has lost its way.
150 years ago..in 1871 -,the first law was passed-, nefarious and evil..the first official effort to deconstruct the Glorious Foundation of freedom known as these United States of America.
In my life is young boy-, I watched my dad walk around with what was-, his right arm-, shrunken-,it looked like a claw..hanging there.
In World War II , at 19 yesrs old-,he stood up from behind his hiding place, a rock, on the island of Palau-, in the South Pacific.. just in time to take a bullet, in what I believe was the left side of his chest..it went in and destroyed his lung- and hit bone.. and ricocheted acrossed his chest cavity- missed his heart (that was a miracle) exited his armpit..and went back-out through his shoulder ..and out the other side. I always remember him saying it “ruined my nerves”.. in his kind of country colloquial way. It was really a Midwestern Indiana accent-,long deluded by years of exposure to California neuroses. The result of that bullet’s trajectory..was that his right arm shrunk.. It’s the only way I could ever think to describe it.
.. his hand look like a bird’s claw. But he really learned how to use it. He would use it as a prop.. to hold up engine parts and other automotive related things -,as he was a mechanic-, in those days in his youth.
He stayed in that his whole life..eventually moving into management..he had to re-learn to write with his left hand. He never wanted me to go into the service-, he said he didn’t “think I would make it.”.. At the time when he said that, I thought he meant that I would get killed on the battlefield. Later on when people asked me about that comment-,I realized he could have meant something else-,as in maybe not ascending through the ranks-, or something similar. In view of that-, I wish I would have gone into the service in those days.. kind of like the Gary Sinise character In Forrest Gump.. that sat on top of the Mast of a-.. either a military vessel- or a fishing boat – I forget.. cursing at God .. in an electric storm saying “is that all you’ve got”.. Even if I would have died on a battlefield.. at least my life would have counted for something- especially given the curse that was carried forward through me by a bio mom unit that assaulted me at about the age of three or four.. If I had perished on the battlefield- at least my life would have counted for something really worthwhile. Do not take my comment about cursing at God as an invective or an intended offense.. But simply an expression of frustration -, at the lack of ability to do anything but depend on help or support from either a human source or something that God has-, potentially..provided -frustrated at my own lack of ability to enter into a meaningful expression of functioning in a way that provides for my fellow man -,or for the church or anything related.

Lord let us continue to enter into prayer and service for our fellow man-,and women- and be grateful as you work through us-,as conduits of your service and mercy..that we could provide what is needed to allow America to continue to not only exist- but thrive ..and it’s Beacon of Hope.. the -‘light in the city on the hill’- as President Reagan said. Obviously we have entered into surreal times. Cause us to strive to understand how reality could have become so distorted~.. I suppose at least in these times we have been forced …at least some of us,..who had.,at this point developed a real sense of connection to you, have been forced or or maybe Blessed to understand your presence in a way we had not before.. at least on some level. Thank you Lord for all that you have done for us -,even the least of us. Lord let our military and police be returned to a place of honor in our nation and let those foolish United States citizens who do not appreciate our emergency responders- be re-educated in the power of your Holy Spirit to respect and appreciate their citizenship in this great country.
In Jesus Name, Amen

Lord, thank you for the work you are doing in Herb as deals with the difficulties of his life. Show him Lord that we don’t need to do any one certain thing to be of value to our country or to others in general. Each day, each one of us has an occasion to show God’s love to someone, to encourage another with words or actions, or “just” to offer prayer to God on behalf of another. Thank you for Herb’s concern for our country. Heal his hurts Lord and show him and all of us that by praying for our country we are doing exactly what You want us to do.

And Lord, put the notion in more than a few of our political and religious leaders that honoring Memorial Day for it’s intended purpose by stopping together in prayerful silence like they do in Israel is a marvelous idea that should be a practice for the USA.

Thank You Lord God that we are free to show these gestures of prayer and respect for our fallen brothers and sisters on this day. I just don’t understand why it’s only Nassau County that is going to sound the sirens and ring the church bells at noon and 6pm and not all the rest of the counties in the U.S.A. I’m sure every county has lost at least one serviceman/servicewoman in all the wars this nation has been through.

The single largest tragedy in this United States of America is the way the government and citizens do not protect, care for nor pay proper homage to our
military veterans. They risk their lives to preserve the rights and freedoms for all U.S. citizens! We as citizens must all ask for forgiveness and repent on behalf of this tragedy our negligence and corruption has caused!!!!!!!!!! Take Memorial Days Seriously!

Lord today is a day to honor the fallen Soldiers of our Nation. The very foundation of our freedoms today are with those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and those who served. Today I am grateful for Your protection, guidance and Sovereignty over our Nation. Then Lord to honor the fallen and pray for their families and fellow Soldiers. Lamentations 5:21-22, Psalm 9:10, Is. 66:3, Rev. 21:3-4, Psalm 34:18, Is. 61:1-2. Grateful, Thankful Sherry

What a beautiful gesture. To stop the busyness, in an instant, to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the liberties of our great constitution. Just as Jesus laid down His life to give us freedom from the penalty of sin; our soldiers gave their lives so that we could live in freedom.
