NEW STUDY DISTORTS TRUTH OF ABORTION REGRET
Seven years after her abortion, Pat Layton was driving down an interstate highway in Florida when she burst into tears. The Christian talk show playing on her car radio featured women talking about their abortions. They mentioned their struggles with drugs, alcohol, anger, depression, and shame. Layton had experienced all of those problems and she was finally realizing that they stemmed from her abortion as a college student in 1977.
Pray for the end of abortion and for life in America with our newest devotional series, Uniting with Christ to Pray for Life. These beautiful, thoughtful, insightful prayers cover various aspects of the fight for life for a week.
“The whole reason that I had wanted an abortion was to be independent and to have a good job,” Layton said. “I had actually accomplished what I had wanted.”
But she was miserable. It took seven years for Layton to realize her abortion was causing her pain.
Now researchers are trying to dismiss the pain women like Layton have experienced. Last week, the academic journal Social Science & Medicine published a study that claimed post-abortive women feel more relief than regret in the years after their abortions. Researchers, led by Corrine H. Rocca of the University of California, San Francisco, followed up with 667 women who had abortions, tracking their emotions from one week to five years after the procedure.
“We found no evidence of emerging negative emotions or abortion decision regret,” the study claimed. In its conclusion, the paper argued that its findings challenge pro-life laws that regulate abortion access on the basis of protecting women’s emotions. But stories like Layton’s challenge those conclusions. She has since written Surrendering the Secret, an abortion recovery Bible study used across the country. Layton said her abortion recovery began that day she was driving on the highway.
Pamela Whitehead, executive director of ProLove Ministries, said it took her a decade to identify the effects of terminating her pregnancy. Just days after her abortion in 2001, the 9/11 terrorist attack happened, and she buried her grief. In the following years, she attempted suicide, became addicted to drugs, and lived in a homosexual relationship even though she wasn’t a lesbian. It wasn’t until 2011 that Whitehead realized her abortion had been the “precipitating factor” of her self-destructive decisions. “I could trace it back to that event,” she said. . .
In contrast to the study’s findings, Whitehead said her emotions resulted directly from her abortion. . .
Whitehead and Layton both noted the study looked at a limited number of women. The report said only 37.5 percent of the women asked to participate in the study consented, and even fewer completed it. The final number of women, Whitehead said, represented less than .01 percent of the total number of women who have abortions every year. Layton pointed out that women who experienced any trauma or shame related to their abortions were the least likely to participate in such a study.
Other research verifies the negative post-abortive experiences of women like Whitehead and Layton. A 2018 literature review examined past studies that addressed the effects of abortion on the mental health of women. “The association between abortion and higher rates of anxiety, depression, substance use, traumatic symptoms, sleep disorders, and other negative outcomes is statistically significant in most analyses,” the review found.
Another study published in 2017 surveyed post-abortive women, most of whom had sought abortion recovery services at pregnancy care centers. Of the 987 women who participated, 67.5 percent said they visited a psychiatrist, psychologist, or counselor after their first abortion—a significant increase from the 13 percent who already received mental health services before the abortion. The researchers also found an increase in the percentage of women who used prescription drugs for mental health following their abortions.
But the conclusions of the UCSF study downplay these negative mental health effects of abortion. The resulting data puts vulnerable women––and unborn babies––at serious risk while propping up the argument that abortion is justifiable.
“It’s nothing but somebody’s wasted time trying to justify abortion and trying to make it look like it doesn’t hurt women,” Layton said.

(Editor’s Note: IFA Staff are in DC at the March for Life. We have met and heard from dozens of women and men, in just one day, about the harm and regret of abortion. As we have heard stories about what the Lord is doing, we can share some simple prayer points with you–
- Pray for Christians to be merciful, graceful, kind, and open to the Lord’s leading in responding to friends and family who have been involved in abortions.
- Pray for opportunities to share the healing truth of Christ with people who regret abortion–their healing will only be found in Him.
- Pray for the truth to get out, that no one will be isolated in pain without hearing the Gospel message.)

Over 30 years ago Ive had a total of 4 abortions within 7 years. I used abortions as my method of birth control. Unmarried. A total of 9 pregnacies. Giving birth to 5 children, aborting 4 children, losing 1 child through death, giving 1 away, raising 3. All out of selfishness, delusion, and self righteousness. I was a full blown feminist. I had no remorse. I would abort then go to work. I would see young girls like myself; they would cry, get sick..I would hear the screams behind closed doors; and as I awaited my turn, I told myself..’You are in control, you’ve made this decision; do it and go on with your day.” And that’s what I did. Abortions were my ticket out. I only stopped at 4 because the clinic said I could no longer have anymore without creating serious damage to my body. Then I met Christ. He shuck my entire world! One night in 1998, I was praying and praising God. Then I heard the word, “Murderer.” My heart sanked and every emotion I refused to release, every pain I refused to acknowledge, every remorseful feeling I denied, I experienced at the sound of God’s voice. I had never asked forgiveness before, because I never considered what I did as being wrong… until that night. So many things transpired that night, it would be too long to write and this is already a long story. I can only say much of that night was all about true repentance. Truly crying out to God and getting up that next morning, changed! The years following, I’ve battled with self condemnation. I’ve questioned and felt guilt about every descision, good or bad. But then God and His infinte grace has been continually healing me through His Word. And it still is, to this day. I pray this word help someone.
Romans 8- There is therefore NOW No Condemnation (no judicial act of declaring one guilty) to them which are in Christ Jesus.
“Forgive yourself.”
Jude 1:24 – He (Christ) is able to keep you from falling and to present YOU FAULTLESS (blameless) before the presence of His glory with EXCEEDING JOY. He is the only Wise God.Amen. In His Word, we are not only healing but we are being presented as “faultless” and we are being made whole. Isn’t Christ EXTRAORDINARY?!! According to His Word, “Even when our very heart condemns us. He is greater than our hearts.” Stay encouraged. We are nit just healing but we are being made whole, and that is always a beautiful thing. Praise God through Christ Jesus.
I had an abortion in Dallas in 1980. I believed the lie that it wasn’t a baby. I was a married, college graduate and had just started graduate school. I was around 5 months pregnant and felt like I could not do school and have a bay. So I “chose” school. I went to a clinic in Dallas. It was very impersonable with no counseling. There was certainly no explanation about what the process would do to the baby. There was an ultrasound, but I was convinced it was the right thing to do After they started the abortion process I regretted my decision immediately and but was told that I had to go through with it. It was incredibly painful experience and I was quite sick for awhile.
Soon I became depressed and I was treated with antidepressants. I can’t say they helped. Two years later I had a full term pregnancy and gave birth to a beautiful girl. It was then that the full effect of guilt started to impact me. After the birth of a second child it came to a head.
Thankfully I had a neighbor who invited me to her church. I kept rejecting her but eventually when my son was 6 months old I attended a service. It was there that the Holy Spirit convicted me of my sin. I began to study scriptures and attend church but it took another year before I accepted Christ as my Savior. I received forgiveness and peace over the next few years.
Still there was grief and guilt that persisted even though I was assured of forgiveness. About 11 years after the abortion I went through a program called “Conquerors”. My husband and I went through the program together. Until then I did not realized how much he had suffered also.
I can say now that I have no guilt feelings. Please do not misinterpret this. The freedom from guilt is due solely to the Jesus’ work in me. Deep hurt and mourning still occurs.
“Surely he has born our griefs and carried our sorrows…” Isaiah 53:4
Thank you, Lord, for hearing and answering prayers for the women and men and families of those who are trying to overcome the after math of abortion. The truth will set them free. Envelope them and surprise them with your immense and captivating love, forgiveness, no condemnation, peace and hope. Thank you, Jesus, for making a way where there was no way. May those who work so hard to make abortion appealing begin to soften and eventually know your love as well. Amen
