I Prayed have prayed
Reading Time: 2 minutes

I am hearing a rising tide of Christian voices saying the following things or similar thoughts: “I can’t vote for such an arrogant person” or “God will hold me accountable if I vote for any of the present candidates”; or this: “I just can’t participate in an election race full of personal attacks and bitterness.”

This tide is greatly distressing to me, because—whether you participate or not—the United States will elect a new president in November. This is an undeniable fact, and if Christians abstain from voting, do not intercede, and fail to bring their biblically informed judgment into the ballot box, they will, by default, allow forces of darkness to attain power in our nation.

Perhaps this year is to be a year that Christians will not vote for someone as much as they will cast their vote against another candidate. This is difficult for some to consider, because we traditionally feel we need to be comfortable with the majority of the values and positions of those for whom we vote. However, this may be the year that we must instead use our vote to stand against the person or persons with whom we share the least values and positions.

This is a different way to consider this election, but it might be the election of the lesser of two evils, where we vote to stem the spread of “darkness” over our land. In the midst of an imperfect process with imperfect men (and women), we must pray to the Lord who said in Isaiah 59: 19, “From the west, people will fear the name of the Lord, and from the rising of the sun, they will revere his glory. For he will come like a pent-up flood that the breath of the Lord drives along.”

Lord, breathe upon our nation; revive the godly fear of Your name, that all may revere Your glory.
