Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people. (Pr 14:34)

Why is it important that we pray for our country and its peoples?

First, because God tells us to (1 Tim. 2:1-4), and it is important that we obey Him (John 14:15, Acts 5:32). Second, because God answers prayer (Matt. 21:22, John 14:13-14). Third, God honors prayer and turns His attention to those who pray. He takes note of people who pray and His ear remains open to them (2 Chron. 7:14). Fourth, prayer not only gives God a vehicle by which He can respond and answer prayers, but prayer also changes those who pray, for praying helps us to be God-conscious, and when we are God-conscious as individuals, our behavior is different than if we rarely think about God (Rom. 1:28).

George Washington incorporated many of these elements when he explained why he called the nation’s first federal day of prayer. According to President Washington, “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.”

When a country drifts away from God, God drifts away from that country. When God drifts away from the country, His blessings also leave. Founding Father Samuel Adams (“The Father of the American Revolution”) fully understood this and reminded citizens:

May every citizen in the army and in the country have a proper sense of the Deity upon his mind and an impression of that declaration recorded in the Bible: “Him that honoreth Me I will honor, but he that despiseth Me shall be lightly esteemed” (1 Sam. 2:30).

Numerous other Founding Fathers understood this truth and clearly expressed it. In fact, political leaders for generations embraced this belief. For this reason, President Abraham Lincoln reminded the nation in the midst of the Civil War: “[I]t is the duty of nations as well . . .  to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord (Ps. 33:12). . . .”

But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined in the deceitfulness of our hearts that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace—too proud to pray to the God that made us.

There is much consequence when a nation turns from God. After all, Psalm 9:17 (KJV) warns, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” God expects individuals to remember and acknowledge Him, but He also expects nations to do the same.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us that in all our ways (public as well as private) we are to acknowledge Him; Psalm 79:6 and Jeremiah 10:25 call for God’s wrath upon all nations that do not call upon His name; and the warranty of 1 Samuel 2:30 that “those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me will be disdained” was delivered to the nation’s civil leaders, not religious ones. I thank you, Heavenly Father for your love, and for Jesus our Savior. Holy Spirit, please strengthen our resolve to pray for our country and all those in authority as you have instructed us to do in your Eord. We are so blessed to live in freedom and to come and go as we please. We pray that our freedoms and our blessings overflow to all those around us and that many will be able to enjoy the same, as we do.

Forgive us for being lazy in our comforts and spur us on to prayer and reaching out to others in Your Name.

Thank you for America and to be alive at such a time as this.

Dear Lord, I also pray for forgiveness for myself and all others who have slipped from rational mutually respectful debate on politics, politicians, into name calling or a nasty tone.

Praying that all would pray for our President, his wife First Lady Melania, and all his children, other family members. Praying also for the safety and well being of our past Pres. Obama, his wife Michelle and their children, other family members.

Pray that the First Lady’s status as a naturalized immigrant from Eastern Europe builds bridges to some in Eastern Europe.

Praying right now for the Trump/Putin meeting. Pray for wisdom on both sides and that they can negotiate some wise decisions.

Praying for the currently mostly hostile tweet war between our President and some in the media. Pray that cooler heads prevail…and that our media refocuses on rational reporting, including being tough but fair on all politicians, leaders.

Please calm down the vicious tone in much of our national media..and that people relearn how to disagree while being respectful.

In Jesus’ name…amen.

Father, we pray in the name above all names for our country, President Trump, his cabinet and each branch of govetnment. We ask for Your wisdom to rest on and direct each one of these including all members of Congress, the Supreme court. We come against the enemies, foreign , domestic and spiritual entities that seek to hinder what You have ordained. We ask your protection for each person. We ask for wickedness to be exposed, lives changed for Your Glory. We pray this in the previous name of JESUS! Thank You, heavenly Father!

Heavenly Father, as we come together today with a humble heart of repentance and supplication, We ask that You hear us from heaven, forgive our sin and heal our Land.
You are merciful and truth and Your loving kindness endures for ever. You promise that if we call upon Your name You will hear us and whatever we ask in prayer we will receive accordance to Your riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.
We ask today Lord, that You bless our President, his Cabinet, and the three Branches of Government with a great hunger for Your word, and pour out Your Spirit of wisdom and discernment onto each one of them, to make the choices and decisions that will honor You and be based on the truth of Your word. Shine Your light on our Government oh Lord.
Make them the vehicles You will use to turn this Nation around that they may listen and obey the word of God that we will be a whole Nation under God with Liberty and Justice in All.
We ask for Your divine protection over each men and women in these positions of authority. We put a hedge of protection around them, we pour the Blood of Jesus over them to keep them clean white as snow.
We thank You and glorify Your name for hearing our prayer.
In Jesus Mighty name we pray.

The Founding Moment of our Nation was the solemn Raising of the Holy Cross, at Cape Henry, VA, on April 29, 1607, before another act was begun.
We return to that Cross, and to its full and awesome meaning, at the heart of our foundation.
We repent of our arrogance and distraction, our dissipation and rebellion against the Order brought to all things by the Cross — the length, the breadth, the height.
We plead the Blood of our Savior over the whole land, and the power and Glory of His Resurrection!
Now and for ever. AMEN.

Almighty God, today we acknowledge that, as a nation, “we HAVE drifted away” from You. We truly have been arrogant in our thinking that somehow “OUR superior wisdom” has accomplished all of our blessings. For these things, we repent and return to you, en masse, Father.

We declare over our nation that we appropriate the Government of Jehovah God to rule in America and we release the Authority of Your influence, Jesus Christ, across this land.

Let YOUR Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven.
Amen
