I Prayed have prayed
Father, help us speak up and speak out about what we know to be true and right.
Reading Time: 6 minutes

The following letter, printed by Bari Weiss of Common Sense, gave us chills. A parent of a student at Manhattan’s Brearley private school sent this letter to all of the other parents in the school. He is able to clearly, decisively, logically confront the misguided focus in education today. We agree with Bari Weiss that this is a jaw-dropper. Let us know what you think in the comments. And please, share this to equip all your friends with the verbal ammunition needed to speak up and speak out.

If you don’t know about Brearley, it’s a private all-girls school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It costs $54,000 a year and prospective families apparently have to take an “anti-racism pledge” to be considered for admission. . . .

Gutmann chose to pull his daughter, who has been in the school since kindergarten, and sent this missive to all 600 or so families in the school earlier this week.

Below is the full letter:

Dear Fellow Brearley Parents,

Our family recently made the decision not to reenroll our daughter at Brearley for the 2021-22 school year. She has been at Brearley for seven years, beginning in kindergarten. In short, we no longer believe that Brearley’s administration and Board of Trustees have any of our children’s best interests at heart. Moreover, we no longer have confidence that our daughter will receive the quality of education necessary to further her development into a critically thinking, responsible, enlightened, and civic minded adult. I write to you, as a fellow parent, to share our reasons for leaving the Brearley community but also to urge you to act before the damage to the school, to its community, and to your own child’s education is irreparable.

It cannot be stated strongly enough that Brearley’s obsession with race must stop. It should be abundantly clear to any thinking parent that Brearley has completely lost its way. The administration and the Board of Trustees have displayed a cowardly and appalling lack of leadership by appeasing an anti-intellectual, illiberal mob, and then allowing the school to be captured by that same mob. What follows are my own personal views on Brearley’s antiracism initiatives, but these are just a handful of the criticisms that I know other parents have expressed.

I object to the view that I should be judged by the color of my skin. I cannot tolerate a school that not only judges my daughter by the color of her skin, but encourages and instructs her to prejudge others by theirs. By viewing every element of education, every aspect of history, and every facet of society through the lens of skin color and race, we are desecrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and utterly violating the movement for which such civil rights leaders believed, fought, and died.

I object to the charge of systemic racism in this country, and at our school. Systemic racism, properly understood, is segregated schools and separate lunch counters. It is the interning of Japanese and the exterminating of Jews. Systemic racism is unequivocally not a small number of isolated incidences over a period of decades. Ask any girl, of any race, if they have ever experienced insults from friends, have ever felt slighted by teachers or have ever suffered the occasional injustice from a school at which they have spent up to 13 years of their life, and you are bound to hear grievances, some petty, some not. We have not had systemic racism against Blacks in this country since the civil rights reforms of the 1960s, a period of more than 50 years. To state otherwise is a flat-out misrepresentation of our country’s history and adds no understanding to any of today’s societal issues. If anything, longstanding and widespread policies such as affirmative action, point in precisely the opposite direction.

I object to a definition of systemic racism, apparently supported by Brearley, that any educational, professional, or societal outcome where Blacks are underrepresented is prima facie evidence of the aforementioned systemic racism, or of white supremacy and oppression. Facile and unsupported beliefs such as these are the polar opposite to the intellectual and scientific truth for which Brearley claims to stand. Furthermore, I call bull**** on Brearley’s oft-stated assertion that the school welcomes and encourages the truly difficult and uncomfortable conversations regarding race and the roots of racial discrepancies.

I object to the idea that Blacks are unable to succeed in this country without aid from government or from whites. Brearley, by adopting critical race theory, is advocating the abhorrent viewpoint that Blacks should forever be regarded as helpless victims, and are incapable of success regardless of their skills, talents, or hard work. What Brearley is teaching our children is precisely the true and correct definition of racism.

I object to mandatory anti-racism training for parents, especially when presented by the rent-seeking charlatans of Pollyanna. These sessions, in both their content and delivery, are so sophomoric and simplistic, so unsophisticated and inane, that I would be embarrassed if they were taught to Brearley kindergarteners. They are an insult to parents and unbecoming of any educational institution, let alone one of Brearley’s caliber.

I object to Brearley’s vacuous, inappropriate, and fanatical use of words such as “equity,” “diversity” and “inclusiveness.” If Brearley’s administration was truly concerned about so-called “equity,” it would be discussing the cessation of admissions preferences for legacies, siblings, and those families with especially deep pockets. If the administration was genuinely serious about “diversity,” it would not insist on the indoctrination of its students, and their families, to a single mindset, most reminiscent of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Instead, the school would foster an environment of intellectual openness and freedom of thought. And if Brearley really cared about “inclusiveness,” the school would return to the concepts encapsulated in the motto “One Brearley,” instead of teaching the extraordinarily divisive idea that there are only, and always, two groups in this country: victims and oppressors.

l object to Brearley’s advocacy for groups and movements such as Black Lives Matter, a Marxist, anti family, heterophobic, anti-Asian and anti-Semitic organization that neither speaks for the majority of the Black community in this country, nor in any way, shape or form, represents their best interests.

I object to, as we have been told time and time again over the past year, that the school’s first priority is the safety of our children. For goodness sake, Brearley is a school, not a hospital! The number one priority of a school has always been, and always will be, education. Brearley’s misguided priorities exemplify both the safety culture and “cover-your-***” culture that together have proved so toxic to our society and have so damaged the mental health and resiliency of two generations of children, and counting.

I object to the gutting of the history, civics, and classical literature curriculums. I object to the censorship of books that have been taught for generations because they contain dated language potentially offensive to the thin-skinned and hypersensitive (something that has already happened in my daughter’s 4th grade class). I object to the lowering of standards for the admission of students and for the hiring of teachers. I object to the erosion of rigor in classwork and the escalation of grade inflation. Any parent with eyes open can foresee these inevitabilities should antiracism initiatives be allowed to persist.

We have today in our country, from both political parties, and at all levels of government, the most unwise and unvirtuous leaders in our nation’s history. Schools like Brearley are supposed to be the training grounds for those leaders. Our nation will not survive a generation of leadership even more poorly educated than we have now, nor will we survive a generation of students taught to hate its own country and despise its history.

Lastly, I object, with as strong a sentiment as possible, that Brearley has begun to teach what to think, instead of how to think. I object that the school is now fostering an environment where our daughters, and our daughters’ teachers, are afraid to speak their minds in class for fear of “consequences.” I object that Brearley is trying to usurp the role of parents in teaching morality, and bullying parents to adopt that false morality at home. I object that Brearley is fostering a divisive community where families of different races, which until recently were part of the same community, are now segregated into twoThese are the reasons why we can no longer send our daughter to Brearley.

Over the past several months, I have personally spoken to many Brearley parents as well as parents of children at peer institutions. It is abundantly clear that the majority of parents believe that Brearley’s antiracism policies are misguided, divisive, counterproductive and cancerous. Many believe, as I do, that these policies will ultimately destroy what was until recently, a wonderful educational institution. But as I am sure will come as no surprise to you, given the insidious cancel culture that has of late permeated our society, most parents are too fearful to speak up.

But speak up you must. There is strength in numbers and I assure you, the numbers are there. Contact the administration and the Board of Trustees and demand an end to the destructive and anti-intellectual claptrap known as antiracism. And if changes are not forthcoming then demand new leadership. For the sake of our community, our city, our country and most of all, our children, silence is no longer an option.

Respectfully,

Andrew Gutmann

Really well said, as a former teacher, I am abhorred at the lack of education that is going on. Not only in the Universities but all the way down into grade school. The idea that teaching the Critical Race Theory, Cancel Culture, and dumbing down in our education by changing and, yes, gutting our History, Civics, classical Literature AND our mathematical curriculum is something we as parents and grandparents are responsible to do something about. We hire these teachers and administrators and need to be strong enough to come up against teacher’s unions because they work for us. Great job, Mr. Gutman, this is a start.

This is a fantastic letter! God bless you, Mr. Guttman for your articulate and accurate explanation of exactly what is wrong with the transformation of the American education landscape; CRT, the 1619 Project, BLM, and woke culture. Parents every need to stand up and read this letter or one very similar at every School Board and PTA meeting in America. Children are the future and unless parents protect them when they are young, they won’t have the strength of character to resist the leftist agenda of many American colleges and universities. Lord, I pray that more parents like Andrew Guttman will stand up for their children. I Pray that grandparents, too, will make it known to their local school boards of education what issues will be important to you in the next election. It is time for America to stand up and say, enough.

This is so powerful. So on point…but so late. I’m sorry, don’t get me wrong. I agree with everything he said and so glad that he did this. Here’s the thing. This mess we are in started decades ago. You all know that atleast you should unless you have been in denial. When the family unit was broken, divorce became acceptable, fatherness was the norm not the exception, and all the other societal ills, tv became the babysitters and indoctrinators, music as well, such as MTV, when children were sent away to AntiChrist universities at the parents expense, parents never even questioning if these professors were upholding the morals that they instilled in their children. And they were not!!!! As Reverend Wright said “The chickens have come home to roost”. All of these rioters, BLM, Antifa, and the cancel culture, the censoring, the destroying of people’s livelihoods, the defaming of people’s reputations at the hands of the mob is the rotten evil crop America has sowed by allowing these universities to be taken over by the sixties radical AntiGod, AntiAmerica, AntiConstitution, AntiChrist, AntiFamily marxists professors who swore to “Take the Jesus” out of your kids. They allowed the evil seed to be planted in their children’s heads, never even questioning the music they listened to, the friends they made, the college agendas. And thus, this is where we are at. Russian leader Kruschev said it. “Your children will be under communism without us even having to fire a shot.” Boy was he right! America, the frogs in the frying pan now being fried.

We can pray..and that is good. But America must first repent, turn back to Jesus, love of God’s family design and turn back to biblical principals. I’m sorry, otherwise, America will not survive. That is why I say it’s a little too little, a little too late. I have been shouting this for years, and shut down when I have said “You are paying for your child to be indoctrinated into ungodliness and athiesm. Can God change things? Well, as I see in scripture, a national prayer of repentance will be needed. I know that will happen with Isreal in the End Times and a remnant will be saved. Perhaps it will happen to America, and God will deliver America? I don’t know. I will pray thou.

I will pray with you, Vickie. We need a national revival for repentance. YOu named all the culprits, including MTV which was the start of mass cultural indoctrination. So many American colleges and universities are pure cesspools that are spiritually and morally bankrupt. This indoctrination has gone on for over 40 years. Those born in 1980 and after got the full dose and though many resisted, many were seduced. They went off to college and drank the kool-aid. I pray the Lord will touch their heart, break their trance, and bring them from spiritual death to life.

God is able Augie. I still believe more are for us than against. There are two extreme sides…and both sides have very big mouths. Because of this, it does appear America is sinking. But I remember God! His promises to His children. The letter this person wrote is powerful and brave. Perhaps he will have awoken many other sleeping giants? Whatever God’s word says is truth. The most important thing we can do is share the gospel. Jesus told us the end of the book. Jesus has won and all who belong to Him are victorious. Whether America survives this or not.

Indeed, Vickie, God is able. The Alpha and the Omega. The answer is always Jesus. The issue is not whether America survives, this world is temporal, not eternal. Non-believers seek perpetual life and live in fear of death while believers are comforted in Christ by eternal life. Until Jesus returns, it is our mission to love, glorify and honor God above all things, to love one another, and to stewards His Creation. In that love, we are to share the Gospel. I am comforted by much of Scripture and especially Jeremiah 29:11. We have a purpose and a hope. Thank you for sharing your thoughts so faithfully and elegantly.

Amen and Amen!!!!! We don’t live in fear of death…and the nonbelievers resent that I notice that. It’s very sad. It is coming true. Their hearts fail for all the fear they have been indoctrinated with. But our hope is eternal in Jesus Christ. We praise Jesus and tell Him thank you every day for saving us! We know the end of the story. I’m so grateful that Jesus sought me, bought me and I belong to Him. Thanks Augie.

Good for Mr. Gutmann. Thank you for standing up and saying what needs to be said. This country as well as the school systems are out of control. Thank you for your encouraging comments about what is wrong and need to get back to the basics in school. I agree, totally, with every thing you have said.
Thank for your stance. You are an inspiration to the many who have read the article and wish to get things turned around where right is right and wrong is wrong.

FYI My grandchildren are blessed to be attending a private Christian school using the Principle Approach. It is an excellent alternative to public schools and non-Christian private schools. It is a Biblical-Classical Education. The truth of our nation’s Christian heritage is taught. Check out these schools for your children:

Jesus, I’m grateful for this father for being that example for others by stepping up and putting his thoughts and requests in writing. We need more fathers to get involved. It seems Moms are usually the ones that speak up but unfortunately are not taken seriously. My prayer is that the godly men in our country will rise up more in this nation and be a voice for their children, their families and their communities!

A well thought letter and one that expresses the heart and mind of many across our nation. You are right to say we have educationally lost two generations of young people. In the 80’s the Lord led me to pray for a generation that knew not the Lord, nor the wonders of this God, as more and more parents opted not to raise their children in faith. This letter can open a parents eye to “arise and shine”, for we truly do need to stand and not be silent. May the One who is able give us courage and words to speak for our children and grandchildren.

I pray this letter is read by millions of parents, grandparents, and citizens and that they overcome the fear of rejection and retaliation and react with boldness against the lies of the enemy that are now presiding in everywhere in this country in schools, local, state and federal governments, and corporations and other businesses. We can all use these words to model our own protest letters and comments to make our voices heard and fight this war against truth.

Bravo, Mr. Gutmann, bravo! My prayer is that his words will not fall on deaf ears and that other parents nationwide will be emboldened and encourage to speak this truth loudly and clearly. This is a parent who for the love of his child, has stood up and taken action. Our children’s lives are in danger and parents must be on the front lines confronting those who are only politically motivated and couldn’t care less about education.

And i’m sure Brearley isn’t the only private school in this nation that needs to hear every single word this man so pointedly wrote…. My favorite line is “I object…that the school’s first priority is the safety of our children. For goodness sake, Brearley is a school not a hospital!” Amen to that — all public schools need to hear that, over and over and over again, as well. The safety and race issues have been so over-cooked in these institutions that it’s become religion, not concerns any longer. Thank you, sir, for sharing this letter.
