Election 2016: The Year of Voting Against
By David Kubal
I am hearing a rising tide of Christian voices saying things like: “I can’t vote for such an arrogant person” or “God will hold me accountable if I vote for either of the candidates” or “I can’t participate in an election race full of personal attacks and bitterness.” I’m sure you’ve heard these sentiments also.
This tide is greatly distressing to me, because whether you participate or not, the citizens of the United States will elect a new president in November. This is an undeniable fact, and if Christians do not intercede and then vote as God leads them, they allow forces that may not be righteous to attain power in our nation.
Maybe this will be the year that Christians must not vote for someone, but rather cast a vote against a candidate. This is difficult for some to consider, because we traditionally feel we must be comfortable and compatible with the majority of the values and positions of those for whom we vote. This may be the year that we must instead vote against the person with whom we share the least values and positions.
Yes, this is a very different way to consider this election, but it might be the election of the lesser of two evils where we vote to try to stem the spread of “darkness” over our land. In the midst of an imperfect process with imperfect men and women, we must pray to the Lord, who said in Isaiah 59: 19, “From the west men will fear the name of the Lord, and from the rising sun they will revere His glory. For He will come like a pent-up flood that the breath of the Lord drives along.”
Lord, we ask that you breathe upon our nation, revive the fear of Your name, that all may revere Your glory.
