HOW TO RAISE CHILDREN WHO WILL NOT RENOUNCE CHRIST
HOW TO RAISE CHILDREN WHO WILL NOT RENOUNCE CHRIST
In Cuba, the Triune God had given me an amazing experience where I KNEW without a doubt I was in the center of His will.
In China, Almighty God was about to give me a keen insight into how my own self-centeredness often determined how I nurtured my children.
In 1971, I was blessed with three children. By then they were, respectively, three, eighteen months, and a few weeks old. One afternoon, when all three were taking their naps, I sat at the kitchen table having my daily devotions. In a short moment, or so it seemed, a dreadful fear came upon me…
…What would happen should my children grow up not knowing the Triune God? … I begged God to teach me how to nurture my children to walk into eternity with Him.
I couldn’t know how one of the greatest teachings about parenting wouldn’t be learned until a visit to China. Little could I have guessed I would be bringing Bibles to Christians there. And, while there, I wouldn’t meet a single Christian. My Heavenly Father had an amazing surprise for me.
After delivering the Bibles, we returned to Hong Kong (HK) for a few days. What would we do in HK? Be tourists? Visit with the Open Doors HK staff? What about the all-enticing HK shopping? (Wow!).
Upon arrival in HK, we were told that we would have the honor of visiting a family who had just recently escaped from China. We had heard some of their story so we were excited to meet them.
The next day, we sat crowded in the family’s kitchenette. As tea was served, it was hard to imagine we were sitting with the husband/wife “team” of whom we had heard so many stories. They both had the courage to distribute and teach the contents of an “Illegal Book” called the Bible.
Hours later, they had only begun recollecting their frightening story.
During the 1966 “Cultural Revolution,” members of a fierce military squad forced themselves into the family’s home. The Red Guard spent three days and three nights ransacking their house. The family was not allowed to eat or sleep during that time. The Red Guard had come for one reason: Discover illegal Bibles and teaching materials to assist in training small groups.
When they couldn’t find the Bibles they took the family outside and beat the parents. Then they beat the children in front of the parents.
Amazingly! Not one of the children renounced Jesus.
“Do you want Communism or Christianity?” the oldest brother was asked. “Christianity” he responded.
They took him outside and beat him until he began to bleed internally.
A friend suggested to the mother that she take her son to the hospital. There she was told her son would die, with little time left in his eleven-year-old body. Our son had recently turned that age.
The son asked, “Mom, come pray for me. I’m going.” She prayed over him. He closed his eyes with a smile on his face.
I carefully watched this woman who had lost her eleven year-old son, dying at the hands of his satanic persecutors. “Mama, how do you raise a child, so that at the age of 11 he will not renounce Jesus, though he be beaten to death? I quietly asked.
I will never forget how she looked me in the eye — with her amazing reply: “There are three things you must do.”
- “From the time your children are born, you must teach them to never renounce Jesus or another Christian. Your life may be dependent on that other believer.”
- Secondly, you must pray sacrificially for your children. That means you are praying so much for your children that you are giving up things you want for yourself but instead pray for your children.”
- I will never forget the little chuckle she gave before she continued, “Third, and this is hardest for you in the West. You must let your children suffer. They will never grow strong if they don’t suffer. If there is nothing natural that causes suffering in their life, then create a reason for them to suffer.” I cannot forget her astonishing reply.
I was so excited when I got home. These sounded like such good sound principles to follow. I could hardly wait to share her teaching with my friends. I shared it with my best friend and, as I told the story, she wept.
When I finished, she looked at me, while speaking these words: “But Wanda, if my children suffer, then I will suffer and I don’t want to suffer.
It was one of the greatest “ah-ha” moments of my life. What a surprise, a teaching I wasn’t expected.
My CHALLENGE to you —
Grab a cup of coffee… imagine you and I are chatting.
In front of your unbelieving eyes, what might it be like watching your child being beaten to death?
Your Heavenly Father understands. He watched His only Son be crucified. Because of His love for you and me, He allowed His Son to be sacrificed. He literally surrendered Him for this to happen. Jesus, His Son, willingly agreed to do this for you and me.
These are truths that have helped me as I have walked through various types of suffering.
As the Triune God walks you through suffering KNOW that you can cry out to Him for strength, for desire to keep clinging to Him. Jesus is fully God and fully man and has experienced everything. He can relate to you in every way: physical, emotional, mental, relational.
Hebrews 4:15 –16 If you want to have a deeper understanding go here Hebrews 4:15-16 scroll down page to verses 15 and 16.
Also, are you still asking, “Why God?” but have not listened to Joy In Risk and Suffering, it is not too late. John Piper’s sermon has helped me to understand the importance of suffering in my walk with the Triune God. Having a better understanding has helped me desire to hold on to the Triune God and bring Him glory as a result of the struggle I go through. John Piper uses scripture to explain why it isn’t just the suffering of persecution that brings God glory.

A Christian’s suffering is meaningful. We sing these songs with an inner joy, though the pain may not be lessened.

Oh, how I needed to hear this message “Faith Prepares Ahead of Time.” Kenneth Copeland always lifts my soul. I have followed him for many many years and he never fails to bless me with his faith and trust in our Lord. Thank you, Mr. Copeland for your perseverance in the face of adversity.
Oh my goodness! This makes so much sense and is so difficult for us in the West. And the sacrificial prayer for our children- wow, that is powerful. Lord help us to do these practices and be willing to sacrifice comfort and be willing to suffer as our children suffer. Come Lord Jesus and help us be parents like you were to Jesus. amen
I was very touched by this story. I prayed that God would give me strength to always claim Jesus as my Savior, especially if I am ever persecuted because of my belief in Jesus!
I am undone. Oh, dear Father, forgive me for my ease, for my self-centeredness. Bless the sharing of Dr. Wong’s testimony to a multitude here in the United States that your people, called by your name, will rise up in faith submitted to you, overcome with love for you and unafraid. In and for the name of Jesus Christ.
This brought me to tears. I have a 6 yr old daughter & this is my last week working full-time. God has blessed me so that I can drop mt hours to part-time. I am wanting to do what I can to bring my daughter to know Jesus. I am just coming back to Him & I needed this. Thank you for sharing. I know God is listening to all of our prayers. This was an answer to mine.
Are there any evangelical things in place for sharing the Gospel for salvation and for discipleship at the southern border? Seems a perfect time to do so at the camps and places where folks being housed. Please let me know if you know of something like this. I’m in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dear Heavenly Father, though it looks like hard days are ahead, let us rejoice and remember that hardship builds character and courage, two qualities missing in so many people today. Just as this dear sister in China reminds us, being too sheltered and protected can make us all the more vulnerable to evil. Lord this is one of the greatest mistakes we older generations have made over the last 50 or so years, and the selfish, spiritually weak, and paranoid younger generations who now scream for justice and government control are the stunted fruit of our failure. Lord, May the hard days ahead strengthen their character and open their eyes. May they grow to know You and learn to be thankful for the great blessings You have bestowed upon them, and indeed, all of us. Lord help us to reverse the damage done to our nation and our youth, and forgive us for the mistakes and failings that got us to this place. Though the lessons may be hard, let us learn them well. In Jesus precious name I pray O Lord, Amen.
Help me to fully understand what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for me and to understand what Christians around the world have done to stand in faith for His name. Replace my complacency and comfort with commitment to be molded everyday into a better witness for His name.
I feel in my heart we should try to send this video to our senators congressmen etc. Is there a way?
Lord I pray You help us to somehow for divine guidance to open the door for this message to be heard by as many in leadership positions in our cities, and nation as possible. Open the door we pray and for hearts to receive the warning in this message: To save our country, its foundation You inspired for Your purposes, and Your people Your bride from the work of the enemies behind the plans of distruction.
Thank You in Jesus Name we ask. Amen
I need this. So so much
My children and my grandchildren and those to come are so precious to me.
This will be tough
😢😭😭😭 I’m undone. Oh God teach me as a grandmother to suffer & allow suffering as I did not do for my children 😭😭 God of mercy & God of justice Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
I too fear persicution. Please pray for me to pray and rightly devide the word. Pray I can let my children suffer, and show them to never renounce Jesus. Thank you
This was so eye opening. I will reread this many times. My children are adults now and I Wish I had known these principles while raising them. I will Never stop praying, praying, praying for them and others. That, I can do.
People who do not suffer in some form, do not see the power of God. In the USA we suffer from physical pain of disease or injuries; physical, sexual or emotional abuse. We pray for deliverance, but He does not give us what we want all the time, but He gives us what we need to grow in the faith of Yeshua. God is Faithful He will never leave us where He finds us, but will bring us to The Truth, The Light and The Way. We pray we will be Faithful, through God’s Strength, because when we are weak – we see God’s Strength. Hallelujah!
Lord hear our prayers in Jesus name. Amen.
“The God that he worships is real. We have never seen anyone die this way.” This was the statement that the doctors made to the Wong family after witnessing the death of their 11 year old. The beating by a military squad for not renouncing Christianity was responsible. I am reading this in the comfort of my home…the juxtaposition is unnerving. May God richly bless the Wong family and all the families in Christ who live in China, Iran, India, N.Korea…all areas where persecution abounds. I am humbled.
Like many of you, I have prayed for revival in America for years Us Americans have been living comfortably for so long and that has not prompted revival. Perhaps persecution is the way God will choose to revive the Church. This persecution may be coming to America; in very small ways it has already begun. I am raising 3 boys (16, 13, 11). I am taking the mother’s teaching to heart and will raise my boys to “suffer.” That means not doing for them what they can do for themselves, praying that they will rely on God to get them through the suffering. I need God’s help to do this, as it is hard for me to watch them struggle. I will show my boys the video of Mr. Wong.
Thank you for sharing Daniel’s testimony. It touched my heart & spirit by challenging & encouraging me. I am a 3D generation Chinese born in the United States. I pray for the persecuted church/believers & have been donating to Open Doors. I am challenged to keep on praying & doing what I can – what the Lord tells me further to do for the persecuted church & for my children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. All glory to you Father God.
SMA.
I, too, give to Open Doors. I am so grateful that I know sisters like you are with me in prayer for those in China and other nations where sisters and brothers are oppressed.
Lord God, I am so grateful for the truth of Your Word and the power of Your Holy Spirit. Thank You for the persecuted church. Thank You for their illustrations of courage and obedience. Persecution is coming to us in America. Give us all we need to stand firm and hold fast to Your Truth. Help us to respond in ways that give You honor and glory. Help us to do as James 1:2 proclaims “Count it our joy, my brethren when you fall into various trials knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete lacking in nothing.” Grants us patience in these upcoming trials. Help us to be “Sorber, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in The faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” 1 Peter 5:8-9. Lord, we ask through the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the Name of Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior! Amen
