We see clear signs of anti-God forces gaining ground in our nation: prayer removed from schools (1962), Bibles removed from schools (1963), abortion legalized (1973), the Ten Commandments removed from public places (1980), freedom of speech limited, and same-sex marriage legalized (2015). Also, in addition to – and as a consequence of – this judicial, anti-God activism, we see moral decline in broad swaths of our society.

What is the source of this decay, and can it be reversed?

THE PROBLEM

The Bible clearly tells us that our battle against anti-God forces is ultimately against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm, acting in this world through deceiving individuals and agencies.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12 NIV, as are all Scriptures cited).

“… evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:13).

One measure of the success of these spiritual forces of evil in America can be traced back to January 10, 1963, when Congressman Albert S. Herlong Jr. of Florida read a list of 45 Communist goals into the Congressional Record.⁽¹⁾ The list was derived from researcher Cleon Skousen’s book, The Naked Communist.

These goals have great relevance for us today, as we see that many of them have already been accomplished, not primarily by avowed communists, but by other groups under various names including atheism, progressive liberalism, statism, socialism, and even today’s democracy. The anti-God forces have infiltrated our political parties, our courts, the media, our educational institutions, and even our churches.

MAKE AN ASSESSMENT FOR YOURSELF. WHICH OF THESE 26 CULTURAL ITEMS BELOW, OUT OF THE COMPLETE LIST OF 45 GOALS, HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED?

• Promote the UN as the only hope for mankind. ……
• Do away with loyalty oaths.
• Capture one or both of the political parties in the US.
• Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions, by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
• Get control of the schools. …… Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in text books.
• Gain control of all student newspapers.
• Infiltrate the press. Get control of book review assignments, editorial writing, and policy-making positions.
• Gain control of key positions in radio, TV & motion pictures.
• Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. ……
• Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”
• Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.
• Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio and TV.
• Present homosexuality, degeneracy, and promiscuity as “normal, natural, and healthy.”
• Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a “religious crutch.”
• Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the school on the grounds that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.”
• Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old fashioned, out of step with modern needs, and a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.
• Discredit the American founding fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the “common man.”
• Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of “the big picture”….
• Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture, e.g., education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.
• Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.
• Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand or treat.
• Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.
• Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents.
• Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.
• Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special interest groups should rise up and make a “united force” to solve economic, political, or social problems.
• Repeal the Connally Reservation so the U.S. cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction over domestic problems. …

THE ANSWER

To overcome the forces of evil on earth, we first need to engage in the battle in the heavenly realm. And that battle is fought on our knees in prayer.

“… if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

A CRY FOR OUR NATION

Based on Hezekiah’s Prayer in Isaiah 37:16-20

“O Lord Almighty God, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. Give ear, O Lord, and hear; open Your eyes, O Lord, and see; listen to the words Your enemies use to insult the living God.

“It is true, O Lord, that secular humanists, atheists, and others who do not honor Your Name have severely damaged the framework of our society. Even as termites destroy the frame of a house from within, so have they infiltrated the schools, the universities, the courts, the media and the government of our land intent on destroying our Christian heritage.

“Now, O Lord our God, deliver us from their hands, so that all kingdoms on earth may know that You alone, O Lord, are God. Amen.”

Second, if we who are Christians will humble ourselves and pray and seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways, then God will hear from heaven and heal our land.

How will God heal our land?

The Bible and the history of the Church teach several key features of God healing a nation.

1. God will raise up godly leaders, as He did with Martin Luther and John Calvin in the Reformation, and Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield in the First Great Awakening.
2. God will use these leaders to stir the hearts and minds of believers to live lives fully surrendered to Jesus Christ.
3. The revival amongst God’s people will attract many new believers.
4. The culture of the country will change as a reflection of a change in the hearts and minds of the people.
5. Godly people will become engaged in the culture and cultural battles.
6. The nation’s institutions: political parties, courts, media, educational institutions, errant churches will change with the forces of evil overcome by the forces of good.
