I Prayed have prayed
We pray Lord for a revival such as this nation has never seen before, an awakening that would reorient our view of ourselves, this world and our God.
Reading Time: 7 minutes

As we sit here in the midst of a chaotic and tumultuous culture, we can grapple with the fear, uncertainty, and absurdity of what’s going on (where do we start?) or we can step in and look for seeds of beauty, hope, and truth. Surely, the Lord has not given up on us. He in fact has never left the throne and is still working things out for His glory and renown. Do you believe that?

There are pockets of intercessors and believers still standing for truth and praying for a Jesus movement like never seen before in this nation. There are still churches submitting first and foremost to the Lord’s principles and His leading. We are crying out!

How perfectly you lead us, a people set free. Loving shepherd of Israel—listen to our hearts’ cry!… Break through and reveal yourself by coming to our rescue. Revive us, O God! Let your beaming face shine upon us with the sunrise rays of glory; then nothing will be able to stop us. O God, the mighty Commander of Angel Armies, how much longer will you smolder in anger? How much longer will you be disgusted with your people even when they pray?… Come back, come back, O God, and restore us! You are the Commander of Angel Armies. Let your beaming face shine upon us with the sunrise rays of glory, and then nothing will be able to stop us!… Come back, come back, O God to restore us! You are the Commander of Angel Armies.

Look down from heaven and see our crisis. Come down and care for your lovely vineyard once again… O God, the mighty Commander of Angel Armies, come back and rescue us! Let your beaming face shine upon us with the sunrise rays of glory. Then nothing will ever stop us again! (Ps 80:1-4, 7, 14, 19 TPT)

Lord, we need you!  Only YOU will do!

From one side of the battle, we don’t appear to be on the brink of anything but a total annihilation of government, history, society and certain freedoms in this country.  But God!

Let’s step back in time for a few moments.

The late 1960s marked one of the most tumultuous periods in American history. Anti-war protests reached a fever pitch, culminating in a near war-like confrontation at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. At the same time, the successes of the Civil Rights movement were threatened by the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in April of the same year. This underlying cultural friction combined with the sexual revolution and significant increase in access to psychedelic drugs to give rise to an emerging counterculture that rejected what it viewed as mainstream America. (Andrew MacDonald & Ed Stetzer, Talbot Magazine , 6/17/20)

The scene is so familiar to what we are walking through today.  We were in the midst of a deep civil rights movement, great controversy surrounding the Vietnam War (and in turn an onslaught against our soldiers who were sent over to fight), and there was a stir for something drastically different (many in hopes of escaping the present-day troubles) –  a counter-cultural movement.

The Woodstock Music Festival (August 1969) became “synonymous with the counterculture movement of the 1960s.” In an event almost haphazardly put together, almost half a million people showed up to a small dairy farm in New York for a peaceful celebration of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll.  This movement forever changed the course of pop culture, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.

An equally powerful movement began on the opposite coast with the Jesus People Movement (JPM).  The young people flocking to Woodstock were pursuing the same things as those seeking Jesus in the JPM.  They were grappling for light and hope in the midst of a chaotic culture.  They were looking to numb themselves to the present-day struggles, with possible hopes of finding “truth” at the other end of it.

Across the various expressions, the JPM emphasized both the authority of Scripture and its accessibility to all believers. Many of its leading pastors and evangelists adopted a simple, verse-by-verse hermeneutic that instilled a belief that all Christians could, through careful reading, likewise understand and apply Scripture (10).

Even in their defining slogan — the raised finger and words “one way,” was an acknowledgement that in the midst of such pain, chaos, and uncertainty, it was solely through belief in Jesus that people could find the peace and joy they craved (12).

Colleges became centers for revival. Most famously, Asbury College experienced a revival during a chapel service on February 3, 1970 that lasted 185 hours (16). Asbury students almost immediately began spreading out to testify, sparking similar revivals in surrounding churches and on other college campuses. In one such revival, Asbury students led services at the South Main Church of God in Anderson, Indiana, with services lasting 50 consecutive days. (Andrew MacDonald & Ed Stetzer, Talbot Magazine , 6/17/20)

One day-long festival in Dallas in June 1972, sponsored by the evangelical organization Campus Crusade for Christ (“Cru” today), attracted as many as 150,000 people. (Larry Eskridge, The Conversation, 9/15/17)

The difference between Woodstock and JPM is JESUS!  Just like Woodstock influenced and transformed culture, specifically in regards to music, JPM influenced and transformed the Church, specifically in regards to how we reach those on the fringe.  A counter cultural movement desperate for something that was worth “selling out” for – and in the midst of the chaos, they found Jesus!

The JPM and other revival movements throughout history had immeasurable influence on the rest of culture. Therefore, in the power of the Holy Spirit, the Church must continue its agency of being an influencer and co-creators of culture as Andy Crouch argues in Culture Making. And it must continue to send people into public and private spheres as agents of transformation. (Oscar Merlo, “The Jesus People Movement: 50-plus Years Later”, Talbot Magazine, 6/17/20)

I love this picture of the Church “being an influencer and co-creators of culture.” We are meant to be “agents of transformation”!  This is a picture of a Church that is no longer on the sidelines or simply a quiet “lemming” following the masses.  This is about a Church that steps confidently into the battle, finds their voice and is unashamed of the Truth and hope that they carry.

In the early days of the JSM, it was more of a grassroots effort by a group of pastors, students, and born-again hippies (the “Jesus People”)—to serve the needs of and minister to the tens of thousands who descended upon the San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district during the “Summer of Love.” Coffee houses, shelters, and communes were part of what comprised the ministry to many who had nothing more than a sleeping bag and a few clothes.

The ripple effect became so widespread – spreading up and down the coast to cities like Seattle, Detroit and Ft. Lauderdale – that it gained the attention and cover of Time magazine.

According to a June 21, 1971 article in Time magazine, Jesus Christ was “turning on” young people all over the United States, because he was their radical. Christianity as a counterculture flourished. Pastors performed mass baptisms on the coasts of California while hundreds of young people watched. In Houston, eleven thousand teens chose to accept Christ as their savior after an evangelist visited their schools. Even popular musicians converted, as Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, and Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary embraced the Jesus People Movement. (Christina Barnes Williams, “The Jesus People Movement and the Awakening of the Late 1960s” thesis, William & Mary, 2002.)

Just as with Woodstock and the “Summer of Love,” music was birthed in and flowed out of this movement – a sound more contemporary and “rock-like” than what was normal and mainstream for the Church – stirring up controversial changes.

JPM and the brightness of my screen reminds us that we are light in the dark places. That no matter the era or social condition, the Holy Spirit is working and uses broken people to fulfill God’s plans for restoration of the human heart. The Holy Spirit works in and through epochs of disarray. The Holy Spirit wind is the one that creates the movement; it blows where it pleases, and awakens the heart of the spiritually dead.

Things were not perfect in the JPM, but one thing is clear in our examination: the hearts of people were ABLAZE for the work of evangelism, and society witnessed the love of Christ.

Can the Holy Spirit do this again? YES! Some may be skeptical at this answer, but I propose you consider looking to the past for inspiration and into the future with aspiration. So, yes! Not in the same way, of course. But our Savior can do it again, regardless of our race or background, for He is sovereign. Yes! The Holy Spirit can do it in the contexts of universities, in our students, in our churches and in our lives… to compel us to pursue a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. To make our hearts sensitive to rekindling our passion for evangelism, and to continue faithfully preaching the transformative truths found in the Gospel of the Cross. It was, and it will always be, through the Holy Spirit and the eternal transforming Word of God that hearts will be brought to repentance. (Oscar Merlo, “The Jesus People Movement: 50-plus Years Later”, Talbot Magazine, 6/17/20)

Controversy is surrounding us every which way.  Anything that is against the mainstream media bent and narrative is deemed controversial, racist, unsympathetic, plagued by ignorant citizens consumed with conspiracy theories…  Are these louder voices and the mainstream media the loud minority?  Is there a silent majority sitting on their hands, downcast and claiming defeat?

Friends, we serve the God of the Angel Armies!  Every time we hear a bad report, or data that supports the public narrative…every time we hear a prophetic word that details our imminent demise…every time we have a conversation that seems to highlight offense, discord, disunity, and confusion – we need to pause and press in to the Lord.  Ask Him what we need to see, how we need to pray and where we need to go public with our voice.

“We just believe that the church has the ability to change the narrative,” Bethel musician Sean Feucht told Fox & Friends. “All of America has just seen these buildings burning and they’ve seen this destruction and the violence. And the news, the mainstream media seems to be infatuated with this. But, I’m telling you there is another story of what God is doing in these cities and the church is rising up.”

We are on the precipice of Glory!  We are carriers of His presence and called to bring His Kingdom to earth as it in in heaven!  I have heard story after story of revivals happening up and down the West Coast, of baptisms, miracles, and revival happening at the site of George Floyd’s memorial, of churches committed to not forsaking the assembly.

That should become the norm, the expectation, not the exception – the atmosphere should shift as we step foot onto the scene.

Even if…

Nothing changes.  We step into seeking nothing less than His Glory and praying for the veil to be peeled back.  Where darkness abounds, our light should be that much brighter!  As carriers of His presence, our light should pierce through and be undeniable to all those surrounding us.

Are we on the brink of the next Jesus People Movement?  My hope is in the ONE who spoke the world into being, our Creator, our Hope, our King…the name above all other names!

I’m praying for revival such as this nation has never seen before, an awakening that would reorient our view of ourselves, this world and our God – a move that would cause our hearts to beat in unison with the only One who can change everything.  Will you join me?

Our church prayer hour has been praying. We are covering every segment of society and government. Our hope is in God alone to change our deceived world to awaken and come to Him.

There is a great spiritual hunger abiding within the youth. My husband and I recently participated in boardwalk evangelism and shared the gospel with 116 kids, four got saved. Groups of kids were waiting in line to speak to those evangelizing. We never saw such a hunger in all the years of witnessing.

Jim, why so pessimistic? Even if just one person repented and was saved, the Angels in Heaven would rejoice. Look at what happened on the day of Pentecost and what followed after that. I think you need to read Acts.

This time we need to stand, and join together as one. A house divided against itself cannot stand Matthew 12:22-28 http://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/speeches/house.htm This happened in history before, and like all history it is repeating itself.

Dear Lord help us to halt the cancel culture that has started to devour our society, and help us to find our way back, and please Lord let it be the
Christians in this country, standing as one and bring revival to country that was founded and dedicated to your Glory. Amen and amen.

Heavenly Father, In Jesus Name, I agree with Cole that we need to claim Your promises, read Your Word. It is manna for our souls. The Word, the Promises encourage, enlighten, make us bold for the battle. I pray Your people will feed on the Word daily, ask God to lead and guide them as to how and what He desires them to
do on any given day to be a part of Revival. As a soldier of the Cross I need to go into the field fortified with the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. Lord forgive me for the many times I have neglected feeding on Your Word. Thank You for Jesus who died so my sins are forgiven. Thank You for refreshing me through the act of Repentance and Forgiveness. Thank You for renewing Your Church daily. Amen

We are in need of revival as never before. Months ago I wrote a series of short stories. I sensed the Lord directing me to call it G.O.D.D. (game of Democratic distraction). As I look back now, it perhaps should be more aptly called “game of deception and distraction” because that is exactly what the enemy has been doing to the body of Christ and non-believers in the last 25 years and especially now in the last 6 months. Hell continues to use ALL of it’s distractions to get the body of God’s believers away from His promises and onto what seem to be insurmountable problems. Yet God shows us time and time again that His word never changes not does He.
We must learn daily to step forth and believe and claim God’s promises. God waits for us to step forth…in faith fortified by His power & anointing to lay claim to what He has already done. A dying world trying to survive on artificial life support means needs Jesus. Our nation and world doesn’t need a new and alternate definition of racism or cultural injustice or any of the other supposed “real problems with band-aid solutions” …we need Jesus and we need revival. We need the spirit of God to overwhelm us to the point where we cannot hardly stand in His presence.
We don’t need more government programs or policies…we need Jesus.
We need heart changing revival.

Dear ones,
I have just finished reading the article and all of the comments.
Tears flow. Such an amazing re-boot for this great-grandmother who has been praying
for REVIVAL! Such gratitude for all the commentary that followed the article!

God shall arise, and His enemies shall be scattered (Psalm 68:1)! He always fulfills His word
in His time. So, let us rejoice and be glad for such a Savior, such a mighty God who sent Him,
and for The Holy Spirit who was sent forth to sustain, encourage and bring us through all of the
uncertainties of life. And, let us all keep bringing as many as we can into the saving knowledge
of Jesus, God’s Christ, as we keep our ears peeled for that “trumpet sound!” We then will look
up to see Him “riding on clouds, and shining like the sun” on that most glorious day!
Blessings of His abundant grace, Anita

Revival starts with us. When the BODY’s heart is beating with the LORD’s will; we will see the resurrection power of Yeshua! Walls will come down. If my people who are called by my Name shall humble themselves AND turn from their wicked ways 2 Chron 7:14… Let the priests who minister before the LORD cry between the porch and the altar Joel 2:17…

Joel 1:14 “Gather yourselves in a solemn assembly. Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD”

Folks the time is late and the sins of this nation have stacked up to Heaven. Who will lay down their lives as a living sacrifice 🙏

Lord, Let our prayers of repentance and intercession carry great weight with You. You want to save all who can be saved. Let this be a time of revival, people being introduced to You, coming to know and love You, and going out to tell others about You. Let every seed planted in Your Name sprout in the hearts of those who paid no attention at the time. Bring to fruition all our prayers for revival. You are the God of Nineveh. Please bring revival from the bottom up and top down, spread it left and right and all around, and let Your Glory cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. In Your glorious Name I pray. Amen.

My faith was sparked by the Jesus people movement in the 70s and I give all praise to the Lord! As I have just moved to Southern California, I am going to San Clemente where Saturate Orange County and local churches are gathering this afternoon from 5 to 8 for a worship service. Lord Jesus, light on fire your people and draw many into a new and fresh relationship with you. I pray for the young people that you will birth hope in their hearts and spread it across the land. Thank you for the leaders who have stepped out in faith to obey you… Bless their efforts and unite us as one in praying for revival. Maranatha, come Lord Jesus!
Amen.

Don’t forget the Holy Spirit movement in the churches, the Charismatic Renewal that simultaneously began in a prayer meeting in Duquesne university in Pittsburgh and came alive in Ann Arbor and was set ablaze in California. This was also in the late sixties. Pray we will see God and follow Him in this time.

So very grateful for being part of the Jesus movement when He pulled me off the road to hell April 30, 1971. In college some of us girls, freshly baptized in the Holy Spirit, would gather in dorm rooms to pray, and we saw Him work in our lives. Some of us are still in touch heading on to 50 years later! For my graduation present, my parents gave me a plane ticket to Dallas for Explo 72, spoken of in this article. (Campus Crusade)So many many thousands of college and high school students from all over worshiping Jesus!

The Lord placed on my heart when I was praying for those during the Ferguson uprising. He said go your whole church when you see there will be an uprising and sing praises to the Lord. Watch the Holy Spirit sweep through the crowd and bring peace. The Holy Spirit must be placing this on many hearts. I love that Sean has acted on the drawing of the Holy Spirit. We should not be afraid because the angel of the Lord encamps around us and keeps us safe. The Lord is a bulwark around us. I think of Paul and Silas after they they were beaten and thrown in prison, prayed and sang praises to God and the earth quaked and they were free all set from their bonds.(Acts 16) And in Acts 5 the apostles did many signs and wonders in one accord and the multitude came out to see them. The apostles were put in prison but the angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them forth and they were found teaching the word of God in the temple. Acts 5: 29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Also Feburary of 1967 a small group of catholic college kids were on a retreat and the Holy Spirit baptized them again. It was the start of the Catholic Charsmatic Renewal. I’m a member of a charismatic parish in Ann Arbor. Some of the founders attend this parish. They asked Jesus where is the dynamite that they recieved at their confirmation. The Lord showed up and flooded that place. The Ark and Dove in Gibsonia is the retreat center.

Save some of the BLM leaders by the power of your irresistible grace! Go after family members of wicked governors and mayors, transforming them into Jesus followers! Jim, of course it is all of God! But the Bible is full of special moves of God, Times under open heaven, from Genesis to Revelation. I have lived as a missionary kid for 18 years throughout Asia, on the hymn of Communist China and in the darkest areas of India. I can tell you there were great movements of God! Hope you read my comments about the Asbury revival, which was all about God’s initiative and our receptivity. He is sovereign! But he appoints leaders and always has through all generations. I love what Paul said when they told him about others who were preaching the gospel out of jealousy to hurt him! It rolled off his back like water off a ducks. He was just glad that Jesus was being lifted up

Lord Jesus, You know how desperately we need You. By Your Holy Spirit, draw a multitude of people to Your side, convict people of their sin, and reveal Yourself and your power and great love to them. Cause them to follow hard after You and Your ways. For those of us who are already believers, pour out your Holy Ghost fire upon us. Convict us of our sin. Give us Holy Spirit boldness to be strong , powerful witnesses who can make a difference for good for such a time as this. Give us the sensitivity to those around us who are hungry for the Way, the Truth, and the Life that only You provide. Empower current believers to be powerful witnesses for You. Use us as You see fit in these tumultuous times. Please bring all backslidden Christians back to You. Let there be a last days revival, the likes of which we have never seen on the face of this earth. In Jesus’s name we pray.

I am grateful to Suni for writing and compiling this challenging and hope-saturated article. I WAS IN CHAPEL AT ASBURY COLLEGE THAT GLORIOUS MORNING IN FEB. 1970 When the Shekinah presence of the Holy Spirit manifested in spontaneous sovereignty. Even though I am a published writer, I can’t find the words to describe the holy awe that filled the chapel that day and continuously for seven days and nights. Since it was God ordained, there was no preaching or planned schedule. We just knew we were in his presence and didn’t want to leave. Wave after wave of glory descended, making it almost impossible to stand during those moments. People from the surrounding community in Kentucky as well as national news media began to come as the word spread. We only left Hughes auditorium to quickly eat a bite of food, and possibly sleep for a couple of hours before returning, not wanting to miss a moment of His glory. I believe the key element was heartfelt repentance by students and professors alike. In the blazing light of truth, the smallest compromise and sin was intolerable. But what became public knowledge only after the great revival was that there had been continuing, passionate prayer for revival by a fellow missionary kid friend of mine, Jeannine Brabon, who asked for a list of the names of the students from the registrar and prayed for everyone of us by name for two years; and among a small group of men who had banded together for over a year, sometimes praying all night in Hughes Auditorium with the administration’s permission. Heaven took notice of the persistent determination for revival. February 1970 was shortly after Woodstock and at the same time the JPM was being birthed. Anointed videos are available on YouTube about the Asbury Revival; and a book was written, “When God Came.” COME AGAIN, FATHER GOD! Ignite a holy fire among the black community and pastors so that racism will not be a false excuse to discount the coming revival. Save some of the BLM leaders by the power of your irresistible grace! Go after family members of wicked governors and mayors, transforming them into Jesus followers! We confess that we are too often silenced by fear. May your perfect love cast out fear from every born-again child of Yours! Make us relentless in our pursuit of your presence once again. Again, if it came to an end, it was man intervening not the will of God Almighty who doesn’t have movements, because HE has no corruption in HIM. I have seen a revival after a talk, in Portland, but soon the leaders on 82nd and Glison in Portland stopped it, because it violated their religious teaching. Every time God Almighty pours out HIS Spirit it is meant to continue, but since HE Loves and give free will, when man’s interventions it will come to an end. Even Azusa Street where arms and Legs grew back, eventually man’s glory and territorialism caused it to shut down and after 3 years the glory left. I appreciate your zeal, but the Eternal Lord does not stop his own Glory from pouring out, it is always man, even Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to it, and he died in the wilderness and couldn’t enter the promised land. So where did the glory on him go? It went away as he left the presence of God Almighty.

IT is very optimistic, that when people know the truth, they will quit bringing the Shekinah Glory of the Lord to an end. Those who have the HOLY Spirit will understand and quit turning the glory into movements. The pillow prophets would never tell you the Truth like I have. Only those who LOVE THE TRUTH Will listen. Matthew 25 half the body of Christ that is saved born again Virgin Christians will only be Half of those saved, and the other half [5 out of 10 according to Jesus], will go into outer darkness.2 Thess 2:10

10 and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ASV

Oh Lord, we praise you that you are all-powerful, the mighty Commander of Angel Armies! Nothing in human history daunts you. Over and over again, in exceedingly perilous times throughout the ages, you have demonstrated that you come anywhere your people invite you in. Our prayers release you to do your God-sized works of culture-transforming power and grace. So we invite you in, beloved God! Invade America in a fresh outpouring and manifestation of your grace and power. Do what only you can do!

Transform your people into a Spirit-led army filled with the light of your glory. Change us, Lord! In these dark times, make us everything you have always intended your Church and Bride to be. Let the chaos all around us be the setting where we come alive in you–together. Oh God, let the light of your glory, revealed through your fully-surrendered, purged and cleansed, Spirit-ignited people, shine all the more brightly just because the culture has grown exceedingly dark. Let your light, through us, draw millions of desperate, frightened Americans into the safety and love of the Kingdom of God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Make true for us what Isaiah 60:1-2,16b describes: “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For the darkness shall cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples; but the Lord shall rise upon you, and His glory shall be seen upon you… Then you shall know that I, the Lord, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Joy, such beautiful well spoken words.
As God responds to our cries, our prayers, the darkness that surrounds us is the opportunity for His Light to SHINE!!
May you be filled with Joy!

The Jesus People movement contributed to my personal conversion and to countless others who have served the Lord for the past few decades. Now we are getting older and the people who influenced our generation are going on to their reward. I am so grateful for the people who radically reached out to my generation!

Similarities in these days to those of our youth is evident, though some of the decay was less advanced. Let us all cry out to God. God certainly can do it again. A generation of disoriented young people desperately need Him. The lost need Jesus and the world needs a new generation of Jesus-lovers. Let it be, dear Lord!

I submitted to the free love culture.
God loved me all through it, brought me out of the pit!
Praise you Lord Jesus Oh how I love You!

Whatever our pit our gracious Lord pulls us out and sets our feet on the ROCK. Glory to Jesus! He does it over and over again!
