In a stunning move, the White House has directed Spotify to censor Joe Rogan for his podcast episodes on COVID-19. Rogan is far from a Christian leader, but his censorship is no good thing. In fact, it is the latest in a string of cancellations and censorship from the increasingly authoritarian progressive left.

We’ve seen this story many times. Recently. Facebook shut down the trucker convoy’s page with more than 100,000 members. GoFundMe cancelled their fundraiser, despite the fact that it raised more than $10 million. All the major social media sites have repeatedly removed or restricted political content too many times to count.

Meanwhile, liberal politicians repeatedly call for the silencing of their opponents and throw around the phrase “hate speech” to label those who disagree with them. As people who believe the Bible and its teachings on things like marriage, sexuality, and the supremacy of Christ over government, we would be naive to think we won’t be in the crosshairs of the cancel movement.

We must pray against this beast of censorship before it grows too large to defeat.

Insider Intercessory Information

When writing this article on censorship, it seemed appropriate to discuss an exploit the Lord gave me in 2020.

You may remember when the CEO of Goya Foods, Robert Unanue, took heavy criticism for saying we were “blessed” to have former President Donald Trump in office. Immediately, the woke mob pounced on the Hispanic CEO, apparently a devout Catholic. Enraged, the left called for a boycott and tried to silence Unanue.

That’s when I got an idea, and I’m pretty sure it was from God.

What if we raised money online to buy Goya foods and gave the canned goods to food pantries? We could help the needy and stand up to cancel culture…it’s a win-win.

I set a goal of $10,000, but soon we surpassed that. To my amazement, we raised more than $330,000 dollars.

A Fox Business reporter wrote a story about the fundraiser, one of several news outlets to cover the “Buycott.” For that story, I texted the reporter a series of quotes. She did a good job, but this week I stumbled upon the quotes she did not use in her story. They sparked me to write the column this week. It seems God gave me a unique wisdom in that moment that should be shared with the Body.

What I sent the reporter that went unused:

A CEO simply says we are blessed to have president Trump and the liberal mob comes for him, and they don’t understand why the rest of the country feels under attack? It’s because the far-left has a religious zeal to their cause that in their own mind makes the viciousness of their attacks legitimized and our suffering a necessary part of the remaking of America.

The secular liberal woke crowd is carrying out their own inquisition where Americans who do not meet the pious standards of political correctness. Instead of being burned at the stake, they lose their jobs, face legal action, and may get to hear a lecture form a liberal politician who defunds the police but has a private security detail.

They banned churches from singing in California. We believe in due process for those accused of hate crimes. And they have the moral authority? No.

You cannot appease the spirit of political correctness. It will just continue taking more and more until you are left apologizing again and again for sins you don’t even understand.

Everyone knows our nation is being dragged along by a small, radical fraction of the population. Why is it allowed? Because the majority is silent, silent out of fear, but when they finally stand up as one to the political bullies, they’ll see they aren’t so powerful after all.

In a time where speaking your mind can get you facing legal action or cost you your job because the corporate elite fear the mob just as much as anyone, the most important issue is to speak boldly at the risk of your own well-being. If enough people do that, lovers of free speech and limited government will win.

What Must We Do?

My message here is twofold:

First, as the people of God, praying for free speech in our nation must be a priority. When free speech is gone, our political landscape will quickly spiral. Even worse, we all know that when the government begins to ban speech, our preaching of the gospel, and particularly the Bible’s teaching on sexuality, will be on the outs.

Second, we must be prepared to speak the truth even at great personal cost. Without going into detail, that Goya fundraiser risked my job. You must decide now whether you are willing to lose your social media accounts, your job, your reputation and more for speaking the truth in the public square. If you do not resolve yourself now, you may not be ready when the time of testing comes.

Verses to press into as you intercede on this issue:

“First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made in behalf of all people, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to the [c]knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:1-4).
