Supreme Court Won’t Intervene in New Jersey’s Move to Leave Port Watchdog

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case over New Jersey’s bid to withdraw from a bistate commission tasked with rooting out corruption on the New York and New Jersey waterfront.
The decision, a victory for New Jersey, leaves the door open for future legal tussles between the two states that share jurisdiction over the busiest container port on the East Coast.
The Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor has opposed New Jersey’s efforts to withdraw from the agency, which was created nearly 70 years ago to police organized crime and fair hiring at the Port of New York and New Jersey. The commission petitioned the Supreme Court last year after a federal appellate court ruled that it couldn’t sue New Jersey Gov.
