The conversation around biometrics can be dizzying. IFA readers know about Amazon’s $10 offer for palm prints, purportedly to ease and enhance customer experiences. Leaving sales, marketing, and consumer efficiency to the side for the moment, there are also those who laud the use of biometrics for national security, law enforcement, and fair distribution of aid to those in need.

But then you come across a headline like this: “Afghans Scramble To Delete Digital History, Evade Biometrics.” Among the many goods captured by the newly re-empowered Taliban following America’s withdrawal, biometric data and devices are reportedly among them.

The group cited by that Reuters piece, Human Rights First, wrote on its website, “We understand that the Taliban is now likely to have access to various biometric databases and equipment in Afghanistan, including some left behind by coalition military forces. This technology is likely to include access to a database with fingerprints and iris scans, and include facial recognition technology.”

Fingerprints, irises, facial features… these and other distinct physical characteristics are unique to each person and — unlike a last name or even a social security number — are very difficult to fabricate or evade. And that, of course, is the nature of their appeal to governments and other organizations.

For more than a decade the U.S. military had been using equipment known as Handheld Interagency Identity Detection Equipment (HIIDE) to collect and confirm biometrics of Afghans. Originally, its primary purpose was to find enemy agents, but eventually it came to be used for identifying those Afghans working to support U.S. forces and the Afghan government.

One Human Rights First official, Welton Chang, told The Intercept, “I don’t think anyone ever thought about data privacy or what to do in the event the [HIIDE] system fell into the wrong hands.”

Well, now those questions are very important as this critical information could well be in some of the most dangerous “wrong hands” in the world. As one report in The Conversation notes, “Registering in a biometric database means trusting not just the current organization requesting the data but any future organization that may come into power or have access to the data.” That report also indicates the Taliban has already used biometric checks during traffic hold-ups in 2016 and 2017 to identify and even execute those they considered enemies. What might they do if they have now acquired U.S. data and equipment?

This is a crisis for Afghans who aided the U.S. and potentially to others especially repulsive to the Taliban — like Christians. Kelsey Zorzi of ADF International wrote in The Hill recently that many of the 10,000-plus Afghan Christians are converts from Islam and therefore could face death sentences under Sharia law. Many already know Taliban agents are actively pursuing them.

Zorzi added, “Without any clear plan from the United States to evacuate Afghans under special threat, not to mention the remaining thousands of American citizens, Afghan Christians and many other religious minority groups are stranded…. Without knowing how sophisticated the Taliban’s tracking capabilities are, Christians are turning off their phones to avoid surveillance and have started moving to undisclosed locations.”

Again, we don’t know what information the Taliban has. But, unfortunately, those tracking capabilities could be very, very good.

Let’s pray today for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Afghanistan, and for the thwarting of nefarious use of biometrics by the Taliban or any other force.

May we be mindful, too, that as we explore new technology like biometrics for security, efficiency, or even just fun, that we don’t do so without proper consideration and safeguards.

What is your prayer about this serious risk?

Dear God, I pray for Your protection for the Afghan people, for the US citizens who are there trying to get home, and for the remnant of those of us who still believe YOU are in control. I ask you the thwart the plans and efforts of the enemy, and do not let them succeed. We desperately need Your help.

In Jesus’ name I pray

Amen

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.” Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with his feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. Ps 91:1-4

8 read a story today about a women confronted by a snake moving through the spices on her grocery shelf. It turned out to be a 16 foot python.
I felt the Lord saying that spirit has invaded many areas of our military.
There are those of the U.S. military who have lived like the sasha’s they disparage. Now many will join the ranks of the ordinary and will try to exploit All the technical equipment left. Notwithstanding the effects of that noxious substance known as TicTok it takes prayer warroom strategy to defeat this substance..

Father , I make request that you send angels to cause all the biometrics devices to malfunction and to be digitally erased forever.
Send confusion into the minds of those that would kill innocent people that they cannot understand how to make something work and that they even would destroy all data in the trying! In Jesus name. With You Lord – ALL things are possible!!
Expectantly Lord do we wait for You – to see Your arising and the scattering of Your enemies.
You are a GREAT GOD!!
In Jesus name we make our requests. Our only fear Lord is of you, not man. We declare that greater are You in Your people than he that is in the world! Thank You Lord for deliverance!

“You are a hiding place for me; You Lord , preserve me from trouble. You surround me with songs and about of
deliverance . The Lord will instruct you and reach you in the way you should go: I will counsel you with My eye upon you.”
Psalm 32:7-8

“The wicked plot against the uncompromisingly righteous; they gnash at them with their teeth. The Lord laughs at the widows, for He sees that their own day of defeat is coming….the swords of the wicked shall enter their own hearts, and their bows shall be broken.” Psalm 37:12?13,15

To say “I never thought … in the wrong hands” cannot be true for anyone working in or near government. Every earthly thing can be used for good to serve humanity or for evil, to steal-kill-or destroy humanity.
Guns in the possession of righteousness people can be used to protect and provide food in times of need. Automobiles can be used to take the gospel to our unbelieving neighbors or for human trafficking. Dept of Homeland security and technology can be used for finding evil doers, recognizing allies or in the hands of evil people for spying and oppressing political opponents & identifying certain people for assassination.
King Jesus we ask and implore you to send angels to hide from the evil ones the use of technology to persecute and kill Christians and unsaved people that need your saving grace and power.

Lord I pray for your protection for all in danger in Afghanistan and beg you to thwart the plans of the enemy. You thwarted Pharaoh and freed the Israelites. We beg you to do the same in Afghanistan and ask that You be glorified through this.
