Beauty for Ashes: A Message for Those in Pain
Ashes, we all know what they are. Naturally, it’s the residue left after something has burned. Biblically, ashes were a mark of grief, humiliation, and repentance. The phrase “beauty for ashes” always caught my eye, but sometimes you find yourself experiencing things first hand to truly understand.
I wish I could say this came out of an amazing encounter with the Lord. Instead, this article came about when my backyard caught fire last month due to my negligence. I was not paying close enough attention. All I was trying to do was burn brush, but my yard was so dry the fire quickly went out of control. Thank God for neighbors! Every time I walked to my backyard, there was a rather large black, ashy patch of scorched earth.
Fast forward one month later. After occasional rain and blankets of snow, lush grass and flowers have finally emerged from the ashes. The fire burned away the once dead and dry earth and actually made room for life.
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the suffering and afflicted. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted, to announce liberty to captives, and to open the eyes of the blind. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of God’s favor to them has come, and the day of his wrath to their enemies. To all who mourn in Israel he will give: beauty for ashes; joy instead of mourning; praise instead of heaviness. For God has planted them like strong and graceful oaks for his own glory. (Isa 61:1-3 LBT)
This message was a prophecy about the ministry of the coming Messiah. Jesus came and His death, burial, and resurrection is good news to all who suffer and are afflicted. He comforts the broken. He liberates the captives. He brings favor to his people and vengeance to His enemies. The last part of this verse has always been my favorite. “To all who mourn, he gives beauty for ashes, joy for mourning, and praise for heaviness.”
How does beauty come from ashes anyway?
We have never been guaranteed an easy Christian walk with no trials and no affliction. Rather, He says we will go through times of trouble, but He also promises to help us as we do.
The good (righteous) man does not escape all troubles—he has them too. But the Lord helps him in each and every one. (Ps 34:19 LBT)
And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose. (Rom. 8:28 AMP)
Here is another verse, we are probably familiar with. God makes all things work together for good for those who love God. We understand this verse to mean that He works through good circumstances and bad according to His plan and purpose. But the next verse explains why.
For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory. (Rom 8:29-30)
We each have a responsibility to grow up. When we give our lives to the Lord, we are babes who live off milk. As we grow and serve, we mature and crave the meat. We learn from our many mistakes. We begin to see things differently, having lived through our own trials. We lift up, love, and encourage one another. We learn how to bear one another’s burdens. Though God works through our tears and trials, He chose us to become like His Son. Through everything we face, He is conforming us into the image of Christ. It’s an astounding thought that through our most painful moments (ashes) He is working through it to make us more like His Son (Beauty).
Just as the fire consumed away the dead brush and dead grass it served a purpose. It cleared out my yard and prepared the soil for new growth. It did something I wasn’t expecting at the time. When God is at work, He is preparing us for something even when we don’t know what it is. Our natural eyes see pain, suffering, and grief, but in time our spiritual eyes will eventually see God through it.
He is the gardener and we are the branches (Jn 15:1-2). He prunes us from everything that hinders our growth. By removing lifeless limbs, we become fruitful boughs. A tree that has been pruned looks awkward and spiny, but when it finally blooms what a sight!
He is the refiner, watching closely as we go into the furnace of affliction (1 Pt 1:7). We are tested by fire so we may come out as pure gold and stronger in faith.
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. (Phil 1:6)
Beloved, do you know that He is active in what you have faced or are currently facing? He is working on you and through you. He will continue until Jesus returns. He isn’t a procrastinator like we are. When God begins a work, He is faithful to finish because He sees the end from the beginning.
Jesus replied, “You do not understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.” (Jn 13:7)
A lot of times we try to pray our way out of pain. We try to pray the persecution, tears, and suffering away. I mean, who really enjoys suffering? No one of course, but He is at work through it all. Suffering produces eternal glory that we cannot comprehend at times. (2 Cor 4:27)
We are like common clay jars that carry this glorious treasure within, so that the extraordinary overflow of power will be seen as God’s, not ours. Though we experience every kind of pressure, we’re not crushed. At times we don’t know what to do, but quitting is not an option. We are persecuted by others, but God has not forsaken us. We may be knocked down, but not out. We continually share in the death of Jesus in our own bodies so that the resurrection life of Jesus will be revealed through our humanity. (2 Cor 4:7-10 TPT)
As we continue to press on after we feel like we have taken life’s hits, Jesus’ resurrection life shines through us. God’s grace is spread to more people bringing Him praise and glory. People see the evidence of God’s power in our lives.
He makes the story of our lives, both good and bad, into something not only beautiful but meaningful. He will use your story to bring Him glory and that is truly beauty for ashes.
He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. He has also planted eternity [a sense of divine purpose] in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]—yet man cannot find out (comprehend, grasp) what God has done (His overall plan) from the beginning to the end. (Ecc 3:11 AMP)
Lord, thank You for being actively involved in my life. Though I don’t understand Your ways at times, I sing praises to Your name. I pray for those who are mourning due to loss and I pray that You would comfort them. Crown them with your loving kindness. Anoint them with the oil of gladness, and let them draw from Your well of salvation with joy once more. Thank you for bringing beauty from brokenness. Thank You for using my life’s story and choosing me to become like Your Son. In Jesus’ name and all for Your glory, Amen.

God is good. I made a list of “stones of remembrance” in the leaf of my Bible. I can look at it and see how God has acted in my life. In times of suffering, I know he is near and forming Christ in me.
Psalm 34:19 especially resounds for me. God has always been a help in my time of need, always and in all ways. Thank you for this encouragement to keep on knowing, trusting that He is currently active in what I have to face and He does truly give us beauty for ashes. I do not have to fear the howling wolves at my door.
This has been my personal prayer for the past few years. “Lord, do not waste this pain. Make my ashes into beauty. Help me encourage just one other person who believes everyone has given up on them. Let me point them back to You.” Just recently, every time I step out of my comfort zone and pray for someone in need of healing/inner healing Jesus shows up and touches them. I do not understand it or have anything to do with it but it humbles me every time I witness it. The spiritual battle wages on, but that battle belongs to the Lord. He gets me through each day, even when I am sure I cannot handle another one.
So sorry for your loss, Sister. May God’s balm soothe your pain and grief.
This comment was meant for Nancy and the loss of her husband
Beautiful insights, Gloria. I appreciated the encouragement as I’m grieving over the loss of my husband. Blessings to you.
I’m so sorry to hear that Nancy. Lots of love and prayers your way.
May the God of all comfort you in this time of mourning and strengthen you to be nourishing for those who have felt the pain of losing a spouse.
Psalm 91: 4
He will cover you with His feathers. Under His wings you will find refuge. His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
Thank you, Gloria. I always appreciate your writing and the insights that God gives you. Blessings.
Immediately the title caught my attention “Beauty for Ashes”. This scripture has become my life’s song. Through many hard times the past few years, the LORD has shown me His mercy and grace by birthing healing and new life in my relationship with father and now with my oldest daughter. The LORD has given me eyes for eternity. I’ve learned it is the testing and trials, He has shaped and strengthen my faith in His love.
Thank you Gloria for another encouraging message based on God’s word!
Dear Gloria Robles, thank you for this article. I needed to hear this this morning. A beautiful reminder of how God takes our ashes and plants beauty. The scriptures you used spoke to my heart. I feel so uplifted this morning and ready to face whatever comes next.
TY! for your comforting words of encouragement. I am a Bereaved Mom. A few years ago, our Lord led me to publish a book: ‘Gifts from the Ashes’ (Hope in Jesus for Bereaved Parents). He has taken me places that I never imagined could exist in my journey on earth. I have to constantly be reminded that my citizenship is in Heaven and I am only passing through this foreign Kingdom, on my way back Home.
If I allow myself to focus on all the suffering and tragedy, I am quickly dragged down into the mire. But when I look up and see a portion of what awaits us in Glory, I find the Lord’s comfort and reassurance that my time here is but a ‘vapor’.
As the saying goes: ‘This too shall pass’. God is still on the Throne and that will never change.
I too have struggled with trying to find any “good” to come out of my son’s accidental death. That’s a hard one. One of the hardest challenges of faith there is. But I am more fully aware of the spiritual life we have waiting for us in heaven, and maybe that’s all that really matters. Thanks for sharing, I’ll look for your book.
I’m so very sorry for your heartache, Lynn. The death of a child cannot be explained to anyone who has not walked this path, any more than childbirth can be explained to one who has never born a child. I’m a bit in that ‘grief fog’ this week because St. Pat’s Day is my son’s ‘death-anniversary’ of when he was killed. It’s been a long haul, but I have learned that God had been with me every step of the way. I would not have survived this without Him. A scripture that is dear to my heart is IS. 57:
1 The righteous perishes, And no man takes it to heart; Merciful men are taken away, While no one considers That the righteous is taken away from evil.
2 He shall enter into peace; They shall rest in their beds, Each one walking in his uprightness.
I pray that you find the comfort and strength in our Lord’s loving arms as He carries you on this journey. We shall see our sons again, never to be parted. Though it may seem impossible to believe, God Himself will wipe away all our tears and one day all this pain will be forgotten…forever. Rev. 21:4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (((HUGS)))
Thank you for writing! and for your words & scripture of encouragement. I found your book on Amazon, I look forward to reading it. For so long I felt like I’d been betrayed by my best friend, even though I knew that God doesn’t betray us. The first thing I said to God was “I’m not going to be mad at you for this!”, but mad I was. Its like you can’t help but have these feelings, even though you know you are wrong to. The mother bear in you comes out, shakes your fist at God & says “You don’t use my child’s death as part of some plan, that’s not nice!” Why would it be His will for my son’s young children to now be fatherless in a time when good fathers are so badly needed? Well, it will be 7 years in July & these feelings have faded & I am regaining trust in the Lord again, because there are so many things we need to trust Him for! We’re lost if we have no trust. 30 plus years ago a friend had a stillborn baby & I asked her how she felt about God. She said, “I feel that God is grieving with me”. I thought, why would God be grieving about the baby when He had the power to make the baby not die? I came to realize that he was grieving for the sorrow my friend was experiencing, like when Jesus cried for the people who were mourning Lazarus, He felt sorrow for their heartache, even though He knew He was going to bring him back to life. God is in control, but doesn’t control everything in the way we think of “control”. He doesn’t cause accidents, or prevent them. Accidents happen, tragedy happens, and He grieves for us in our human condition that we suffer these things, which is why He has a plan to rescue us. So I’ve tried to focus on how God is grieving with me, He grieves for us that we have to suffer in our human condition in a fallen world. I will pray for you on St Pat’s day, too bad your son’s death will forever be associated with a holiday. I think of my son as a spirit now, it is very comforting to know that he still exists & that I will see him again someday. It’s made me less fearful of death & more in tune with the reality of the spiritual world. Reading about the subject of near death experiences also gave me the reassurance I needed that it’s all really real! Helps the “grief fog” to lift. God bless you in your journey with child loss grief and again, thank you so much for reaching out to me. (((hugs back)))
Your friend is correct, God does grieve with us. He is filled with compassion. There are many times when Jesus reached out to someone who was hurting because He was ‘moved with compassion’ over their suffering. You are so correct when you acknowledge that ‘Jesus wept’ when his friend, Lazarus, was in the grave. He does comfort us who mourn (MT. 5:4). Also, it says in Isaiah: Is. 63:9a “In all their affliction He was afflicted,”. He understands our anger, too. Nothing can separate us from the love of God, not even death: Romans 8: 38 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” He loves you and He loves your son. PS. 116:15 says: “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.”
I was just thinking this weekend about all my children (I have 4, 3 on earth and one who has gone Home before us in addition to 4 that never saw the light of day). I still will worry about the 3 here. Are they safe? Are they keeping their eyes on Jesus? Are they OK? Yet, with my son who has ‘gone ahead’, I have no such concerns. I know he is rejoicing, healthy, loving and being loved in the presence of the Lord and forever now safe. I know with certainty that he will be waiting for me when I am called Home. With each day that passes, I am one day closer to our reunion. I had the honor of having my son ‘on loan’ from the Lord for 20 yrs.. He, as of 2 days from now, will have been gone from this earth for 22 yrs.. Sometimes, I ask God why I’m still here. But I know that we each are ‘predestined before the world began'(Eph. 1:4-5), and that when our purpose for being here is completed, then we go Home. Our sons completed what they were sent here to do and now they are reaping their rewards. It will all be made clear once we cross over, too. 1 Cor. 13:12 “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” Yes, it will all make sense when we’ve completed what we’ve been sent here to do.
Until then, we ‘wait on the Lord’. We trust Him, place our Hope in Him, allow Him to comfort us and even patiently love us when we raise our fists at Him in those moments of excruciating pain. Though we may want to let go of Him, He remains faithful and never lets go of us (2Tim. 2:13). Our ‘temper tantrums’ do not chase Him away. God is our Father, the perfect parent. We, as imperfect parents, did not love our children less or abandon them when they threw their temper tantrums. How much more perfectly our Heavenly Father loves us when we throw ours. He does not judge us by our ‘feelings’. He created us with those feelings for a purpose. (Eph. 4:26) As I often say: ‘feelings are not facts’, they’re just feelings blowing in the wind. God validates our feelings, then shows us a better way.
Thank you for your prayers. They are very much appreciated. (((HUGS)))

What you have written here is beautiful. You have take words and created a master piece for everyone who reads it. Thank you and God bless you.
Thank you for sharing your story. Parents who lose children and maintain their faith are the strongest.(in my opinion) there’s so much truth in your perspective. When we focus on the suffering, it drags us down. But when we look up and see a portion of awaits us in glory, we can find comfort and reassurance.
Bless you Elaine
Actually, Gloria, we ‘Bereaved Parents’ are the weakest. Such grief drains us from all strength and our Faith is truly refined by fire. We become creatures incapable of functioning, especially at the onset. Folks around me. at the time of my son’s demise, had to remind me to eat. It’s not ‘depression’, it’s far beyond that. The pain leaves one ‘lost in space’ and if one were to ask at such a time: ‘What are you thinking?’, the Bereaved may respond by staring at them with a blank stare totally clueless as to what they are talking about. 2 Cor. 7:10b ‘ For when I am weak, then I am strong.’ takes on a new meaning. We have to be so utterly dependent upon our Lord Jesus to simply get out of bed. It is His Faith-ful-ness that sustains us. When we lose our child, we lose everything. We marvel at how such simple things ever upset us or continue to upset others. I have been victimized by rape, a very abusive marriage, illnesses that have left me crippled. None of them compare with the grief of my son’s demise…not even close. Our lives, our Faith, are stripped down to the bare bones. I am alive today because God wills it. Every breath I take is because God wills it. All of my strength and personal faith died with my son. All dependence on any thing or anybody vanishes. All one has left is Jesus…and that’s the Greatest Gift of all from the Ashes. (((HUGS)))
Thank you for sharing. You bare absolutely right. The reason I had said I believe that bereaved parents are the strongest is what I saw in my grandmother. She lost 3 of 4 children. And yes I saw her depression and pain, but she maintained her love for Jesus and faith in God. She was and is my role model. Thank you so much for sharing yourstory.
Blessings to you.
Thank you for that wonderful encouraging message.
I read this from a hospital bed. Tears came to my eyes as I read. I’ve been told I have a condition called atrial flutter. My heart rate is high and fluctuates.
It helped give me a better prospective on my circumstances. May God use this trial for His glory and make me more like His son, Jesus.
Thanks for your article.
I’m thankful God spoke to you through this Edward. Praying for your condition and believing with you.
Blessings
Atrial flutter is treatable so there is hope in that. Anytime something goes wrong with this tent that we live in, it causes such anxiety. I pray for you for health and healing and for God’s peace.
I pray every week in a Prayer Garden across the street from an Abortion clinic in Tulsa Ok. The land was purchased by the Catholic Diocese of Tulsa , for the public to come to pray. The community developed it into a rose garden with memorial site for the Aborted children and the grieving parents who lost their children to abortion.
My responsibility As a volunteer is to maintain the Roses garden. I just pruned them and pray as I work for those who work in the abortion clinic and those who go inside . I also pray as I work for the Sidewalk advocates who refer people to the GoLife Office next the the Garden, who offer free service. (The Garden and the GoLife
program all Started out of answered prayers during 40day for Life gatherings to pray and fast) It .Started opened in 2011 with just a converted RV to. A mobile medical unit offering free ultrasounds and pregnancy test. GoLife now has 2 Converted RVs and Two brick and mortar office in Oklahoma.
As I read your article I give thanks the Holy Spirit is working wonders in our Nation Daily! Praise God!
Your Reflection;“ When God is at work, He is preparing us for something even when we don’t know what it is.
I pray while pruning the rose garden that the Lord prunes each soul and brings them to Be fully alive and bear good fruit.
I pray that He will breath His life into those who are dead ( in Spirit ) and bring them to Life again, bloom and bear good fruit.
I pray that He opens the eyes of those who can not see , to the beauty of the gift of life. That they might see YOU Lord in all your Glory, in every creations YOU made, for YOU are the creator of All Life 🌹
I pray that those who can not Hear, that their ears will open and Hear and know it is You Lord “the most Holy of Holy“, that speaks to them In Your word and through your people. Who Are their to support them and Life. I pray that You open their Hearts 💞
You Alone Lord know every heart. You know their fears. You know the betrayals .You know Every everything. I pray Lord Jesus you open their Hearts to You , who IS ALL LOVE ❤️ and Forever Faithful , Forgiving And True . Amen

Thank you for the article
My story for the last two years is that Our Father is great and greatly to be praised and worshipped because He is faithful to His Word
Through all my personal struggles with health and loss of our grandson I have seen how the Lord has delivered me from grief and disappointment
I also see how He is changing me to be like Jesus
Concerning the downward spiral of our nation towards wiping out any vestige of God, liberty and justice I am hopeful and believe that Jesus Christ will save us from our enemies
What our enemies thought would happen to us Jesus will turn around and put it on them
I also see The Lord has given me gifts to use and develop for His glory
I have committed to pray and be lead by the Holy Spirit to act
I love God and His people so I will not be afraid to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit
So be it
Thank you for a
sharing your story Roberta. You have great faith.
Dear Gloria
The Lord has given me the spiritual gift faith
Not even knowing me you have confirmed this gift
Thank you for your encouragement today
“This tent that we live in”, I love that. Our true home is in Heaven eternal, this tent is just a temporary housing assignment.
Oh dear my reply was for Anna
Praise God, He has brought be through severe illnesses, the home going of my precious mother 32 years ago and I have felt His presence at the birth of my children snd grandchildren, what a joy to know God is always near.
Thank you for sharing your story Barbara. I lost my mother in my teenage years before I was a Christian. It actually caused me to have a deep resentment towards God though I didn’t know him yet. Now that I am much older God has healed me of many issues I had stemming from a broken family and gave me peace and joy concerning my mom. My eyes see things differently now.
You said it best, “what a joy to know God is always near.”
Blessings
