I Prayed have prayed

What is God doing in our nation? Many have described this election season as unique in recent history. We have the son of a preacher, a billionaire businessman, a lifelong politician (fighting numerous legal battles), and a socialist, all running for president. Many Christians, watching the candidates’ interactions play out, are trying to discern what God is saying to His people.

My response to this question is: What is the Church doing? As I read Scripture, the course of nations is most often dependent upon their people. Consider “…if My people…I will heal their land” (2 Chr. 7:14); “…if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent…” (Jer. 18:10); “Rend your heart…. Return to the Lord your God…and he relents from sending calamity” (Joel 2:13 NIV). Even a non-Covenant nation provides evidence for this principle. Consider Jonah 3:5, 10: “So the people of Nineveh believed God…. Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring….”

This history of our nation is not set in stone; God desires His people to participate in shaping its history through prayer, fasting, and action. This is not the day for passively sitting on the sidelines and believing we can do nothing to influence history. The Scriptures are filled with examples that prove just the opposite. The Church must take on its rightful role and stand in the gap between God and man, bringing God’s values back to our country.

Lord, may Your kingdom come. May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
