A new bloc of self-described socialists is headed to Capitol Hill, and they are bringing an agenda that goes well beyond the Democratic Party’s traditional priorities.

When the Democrats take over Congress in January, they will bring with them a spate of new members who want to abolish ICE, replace capitalism with socialism, and fundamentally transform the American political system.

Voters across the country elected at least five members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to the House on Tuesday, as Democrats swept to power in a massive blue wave that hit even red states like Kansas, South Carolina, and Texas. Here are the five DSA members heading to Congress:

Other left-wing candidates also saw success across the country. William Lawrence, a former DSA member, has declared victory over Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in a Michigan swing district, though the race had not been called as of Wednesday morning. Senate candidates Abdul El-Sayed and Troy Jackson won their respective races in Michigan and Maine.

The five are Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez of New York, Melat Kiros of Colorado, Donavan McKinney of Michigan, and Chris Rabb of Pennsylvania. Every one of them supports abolishing ICE. Three of them reached Congress by defeating sitting Democrats in primaries: Avila Chevalier ousted Rep. Adriano Espaillat, Kiros beat Rep. Diana DeGette, and McKinney unseated Rep. Shri Thanedar. Avila Chevalier and Valdez were both backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a fellow DSA member whose rise IFA has followed since his 2025 primary win.

Their platforms push deep into moral territory. McKinney supports using taxpayer dollars to fund abortion and granting amnesty to illegal immigrants. Avila Chevalier’s platform calls for “gender affirming care for everyone,” and Valdez wants government-funded coverage for transgender procedures. Kiros supports a federal “Trans bill of rights.” Several of the incoming members have also drawn criticism for past statements. Avila Chevalier wrote deleted posts calling for abolishing police entirely. Kiros called the 9/11 attacks “inevitable” because of U.S. actions in the Middle East. Rabb, who wants to impeach President Trump, has said he wants to “burn the clubhouse down.”

The DSA wave is part of a broader leftward shift in the incoming Democratic majority. In the Senate, El-Sayed and Jackson are among the new members who campaigned against Chuck Schumer’s leadership, and Minnesota Senator-elect Peggy Flanagan renewed that call on Wednesday. With five DSA members in the House and a progressive bloc forming in the Senate, the party’s left wing may have more leverage than at any point in recent memory.

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Let’s pray that these incoming lawmakers would encounter the truth of Jesus Christ, and that God would turn their passion toward what is just and right in His sight. Let’s pray for faithful members of Congress to stand firm against taxpayer-funded abortion, the push to medically transition children, and efforts to dismantle the agencies that secure our border. Let’s pray for President Trump as he faces a Congress where some members are already calling for his impeachment. Above all, let’s pray that America would reject the false promises of socialism and return to the God who is the true source of our freedom.
