‘Time for New Leadership’: Flanagan Opens Fire on Schumer
Minnesota Senator-elect Peggy Flanagan is calling on Senate Democrats to replace Chuck Schumer as their leader, just one day after her victory helped Democrats win control of both chambers of Congress.

From Breitbart:
“One of the things that we heard last night, resoundingly across the country, is that we are in … a new movement in this country,” Flanagan said. “Many of us were elected who refused corporate PAC money, who are beholden only to the people who elected us and are ready to fight for bold change. And so I think it’s time for new leadership.”
Flanagan gave no name for a replacement. Schumer, who has led Senate Democrats for about a decade, faces a leadership vote in December before the new Congress takes office in January. As of Wednesday, no Democrat had entered the race against him. If he keeps the job, he is in line to become majority leader again.
…
Two other incoming Democrats, Abdulrahman El-Sayed of Michigan and Juliana Stratton of Illinois, have also said they will oppose Schumer for leader, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Flanagan made the call at her first news conference since defeating Republican Michele Tafoya, renewing a pledge she made on the campaign trail. She framed Tuesday’s results as a mandate for new leadership, pointing to incoming senators who turned down corporate PAC money and ran on promises of sweeping policy change. While she named no replacement on Wednesday, she said earlier in the campaign that Democrats needed a “progressive champion” at the helm and that she was open to Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen taking the job.
Schumer still enters the leadership fight with a strong hand. The Associated Press reported in October that he had broad support among Senate Democrats heading into the midterms, and senators who spoke with the outlet saw no obvious successor. His standing with the party’s left wing has been shaky since March 2025, when he voted to advance a Republican spending bill that kept the government open. IFA has also profiled Schumer’s long career and his record as an outspoken abortion advocate.
Flanagan, currently Minnesota’s lieutenant governor, won by just over 10 points, holding the seat for Democrats after Sen. Tina Smith chose not to seek reelection. Unofficial results from the Minnesota secretary of state showed her with 1,520,865 votes (53.71 percent) to Tafoya’s 1,233,464 (43.56 percent), with all 4,105 precincts reporting.
The question before Senate Democrats is not simply who will lead, but which direction the new majority will push the nation. Let’s pray that God would raise up leaders in the Senate who fear Him and honor His truth, and that the push for “bold change” would not become a push toward more abortion, more government overreach, and less freedom for people of faith. Let’s pray for President Trump as he prepares to work with a Democratic Congress, that God would give them wisdom and courage to stand for righteousness. And let’s pray for Sen.-elect Flanagan, Sen. Schumer, and every incoming senator, that the Lord would draw their hearts to Himself.
