Federal agents searched U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., home in the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 12, executing a court-authorized warrant tied to an ongoing criminal investigation into her immigration history. The Minnesota Democrat has served in the House since 2019, and for much of that time she has faced questions about her citizenship, her marriages, and her finances. Now a federal warrant has moved those questions out of the realm of political argument and into a criminal investigation, weeks before the midterm elections.

Two outlets have since assembled what is publicly known. The Justice Department has not publicly identified Omar as the subject of its investigation, and she denies wrongdoing of any kind. The allegations below are unproven, and no charges have been filed against her.

DFL Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home in Washington, D.C. was raided this morning by federal authorities in connection to an investigation into her immigration paperwork. That raid came just months after the Trump administration said it was investigating Omar.

In a statement to Alpha News about the raid, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) said, “Today in the Washington, D.C, area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.”

Omar has since issued a statement about the raid, saying, “I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.”

The investigation did not begin this week. Homeland Security Investigations agents reportedly examined immigration paperwork submitted by Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, when she was a child, according to the National Pulse. Vice President JD Vance previously confirmed the Justice Department was examining allegations involving her immigration history, telling commentator Benny Johnson there appeared to be something suspicious in the circumstances. Border czar Tom Homan later confirmed a criminal investigation, saying in December 2025 that officials were “looking at it.” President Donald Trump has also raised the allegations, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that Omar had supposedly entered the country by marrying her brother, and adding that if the allegation were true she should not be serving in Congress.

The most persistent controversy involves that marriage claim. Reporting has said Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009, that she says the couple separated in 2011, and that their divorce was not finalized until 2017. During that period she reconciled with Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her children, whom she legally married in 2018. Journalist David Steinberg examined the records and family relationships and raised questions about inconsistencies in her accounts. In 2019 the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that Omar and Hirsi filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015, when she was still legally married to Elmi. A Minnesota campaign finance investigation later ordered her to reimburse $1,500 in campaign funds spent on legal services to correct those returns. Omar has repeatedly denied that she married her brother and has called the story a racist smear.

Questions have also been raised about her father’s background. Reporting has described Nur Omar Mohamed as having served in the Somali military under dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, whose Marxist-Leninist regime ruled from 1969 until 1991 and is accused of atrocities, including allegations of genocide against the Isaaq population in northern Somalia in the 1980s. Accounts cited by critics identify him as a colonel in the Somali National Army. Omar has often described her family fleeing Somalia’s civil war, time in a Kenyan refugee camp, and resettlement in the United States in 1995. It remains unknown whether American immigration authorities were fully informed of his service, and no evidence has been presented that either he or Omar did anything improper.

Separately, a 2019 web archive of the Minnesota Legislature’s library of former state lawmakers listed Omar’s birth date as Oct. 4, 1981, and the entry was later changed to Oct. 4, 1982. Former congressional candidate AJ Kern told Alpha News that Omar’s congressional staff requested the change in May 2019, two days after a video circulated questioning whether she had been 17 in 2000. Kern argues the original date would put Omar at 18 turning 19 in 2000, not 17. Omar has said she became a citizen in 2000 at age 17 when her father naturalized. Kern said she could not find documentation showing he was ever naturalized.

Other controversies have piled up. Omar’s 2024 financial disclosure listed her household net worth at between $6 million and $30 million; she later amended it to between $18,004 and $95,000, with her staff attributing the change to an “accounting error.” Last month, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Omar “married her brother to try to bring him to the United States.” In August, Minneapolis police arrested Abdulrahman Tulle Abdi at an apartment where guns and ammunition were found, and Alpha News confirmed Omar’s son also lived there. Nothing in that reporting alleges any involvement by her son. Her daughter, Isra Hirsi, is a left-wing activist who was suspended from Barnard College in 2024 after an arrest during a pro-Palestinian protest at Columbia University.

Intercessors should watch this case for one reason above all: the rule of law has to mean the same thing for everyone. Scripture teaches that God searches out hidden things. Pray that investigators follow the evidence wherever it leads. Pray that public officials would act with the upmost integrity. Pray for Congress to act on the concrete proposal Kern raised, a real vetting process to confirm that every foreign-born member seated in the House and Senate actually meets the constitutional requirements for the office. And pray for any fraud or lies in Omar’s family, that they would be uncovered, exposed, and dealt with.

Let’s pray for honest investigators, for leaders who fear God more than they fear man, and for a nation that trusts its own elections because its representatives are lawfully seated.
