Democrats Try to Reframe Abortion as an Affordability Issue
As Democrats seek to refocus their messaging on affordability and the economy, some abortion advocates are arguing that abortion should be central to that conversation. A prominent feminist writer and Michigan’s governor have both recently framed abortion as an economic issue, connecting it to family finances and the cost of living.

The argument comes as Democrats debate how much attention to devote to social issues versus economic concerns following the 2024 election.
From Breitbart:
Jessica Valenti, a feminist writer and creator of the Substack “Abortion, Every Day,” called abortion “an affordability issue,” and contended that “you’d be hard pressed to find something more important to your financial life than whether or not to have a child, than whether or not that you’re gonna be forced into pregnancy, or not even just forced into pregnancy, but forced into massive medical debt because your pregnancy goes wrong and you can’t get an abortion.”
“And then you’re in real medical trouble and you go septic or you lose an organ, right? Like, there’s a million ways that that works. But I also think that this issue reaches so far beyond individual people. Like you’re looking at states like Idaho, which has lost a third of its OB-GYNs. Maternity wards are shuttering. Some women have to travel hours and hours just to give birth, right? And so I don’t see how this is not a kitchen table issue when you talk about it,” Valenti said.
“Voters understand it when you are actually talking about it, and you’re bringing it up. If you’re not bringing it up, then of course not,” she added.
Valenti made the comments during an appearance on Vox’s America, Actually!, where host Astead Herndon noted that several Democratic guests had argued the party spent too much time emphasizing cultural issues in 2024 and needed to prioritize economic concerns.
Herndon questioned whether abortion could fit into the affordability framework Democrats are now promoting. Valenti maintained that decisions surrounding pregnancy and childbirth have significant financial consequences, arguing that abortion should be discussed alongside other household economic concerns.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made a similar argument earlier this month during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s 2026 National Dinner.
Whitmer recalled being told during her reelection campaign to spend less time discussing abortion and more time discussing the economy. She responded that abortion and economic policy are inseparable, arguing that decisions about whether and when to have children directly affect women’s financial independence.
The comments reflect a broader disagreement over how abortion should be discussed in American politics. Abortion advocates frequently emphasize the financial, medical, and personal consequences of pregnancy, while pro-life advocates maintain that economic hardship should be addressed through greater support for mothers and families rather than through abortion.
At the end of the day, this is yet another attempt from the pro-choice side to take the focus off of the human life being killed in every abortion procedure. As Democrats seek to reframe this issue and avoid discussing the gruesome realities of abortion, let’s pray that voters would see through the lies and choose to protect life!

Oh Father God, we pray for better care and support for mothers and babies in ways that honor You. Please help us get back to sanity in America and to bring back what used to be common sense. It’s all in Your Word LORD. We know babies are living souls and far greater of importance and value than money. Help us understand that most pregnancies are not forced, except for that our children have been forced with over-sexualization in their schools. It would take care of the economic concern by teaching at the age appropriate time, abstinence until marriage instead of teaching and allowing murder as an option. Oh LORD help us make our healthcare system great and to stop funding murder and terrorism through it. In Jesus Holy Name, Amen.
