A former United States Postal Service employee has been federally indicted after prosecutors say he threw away hundreds of pieces of mail, including nearly 300 mail-in ballots meant for a local primary election, raising fresh concerns about the security of mail-based voting systems ahead of future elections.

A former United States Postal Service employee was criminally charged Tuesday over allegedly throwing away mail he was entrusted to deliver – including approximately 300 mail-in ballots to registered voters in Utah.

Damon Matai Seei, 34, of Payson, Utah, was indicted by a federal grand jury last week and has been charged with unlawful secretion, destruction and delay of mail, according to the Department of Justice.

“When American voters lawfully cast their vote, they should feel confident that it is counted,” Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter said in a statement. “Allegedly throwing away hundreds of ballots is a serious federal crime that undermines the integrity of our elections. Ballot integrity is not a partisan issue.”

According to court documents, Seei was working as a letter carrier for USPS on June 3, 2026, and was responsible for delivering mail to at least 300 residents of Eagle Mountain, Utah. Prosecutors allege that instead of completing his route, he discarded some of the mail he had been entrusted to deliver into a dumpster in a church parking lot. Among the discarded mail were hundreds of ballots sent to Eagle Mountain residents so they could vote in a June 23 primary election. It remains unclear whether Seei was aware that the mail he allegedly threw away included those ballots.

U.S. Attorney Melissa Holyoak for the District of Utah emphasized the real-world consequences for the voters affected, saying that when the defendant allegedly threw away the mail he was entrusted to deliver, he also threw away those citizens’ chance to exercise their right to vote. She said her office and its law enforcement partners take such offenses seriously and will continue investigating any case in which a constitutional right to vote may have been infringed.

Seei has not entered a plea in the case. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 30.

The right to vote is a foundational trust between citizens and their government, and scripture repeatedly affirms that those entrusted with responsibility, whether great or small, are accountable for how they steward it (Luke 16:10). A postal carrier’s route may seem like a minor administrative task, but it carries real weight when the mail includes a citizen’s voice in choosing their leaders. Allegations like these, regardless of political motive or simple negligence, strike at something Americans across every party depend on: confidence that their vote will actually be counted. Christians should pray for a fair and thorough legal process for the accused, for restoration for the voters whose ballots were allegedly discarded, and for the integrity of every system Americans rely on to participate in self-government. Trust, once broken, takes far longer to rebuild than it does to lose.
