Father, we thank You for using ICE to keep us safe. We pray that New York's leaders would choose to support our law enforcement officers, not to impede them.

The Trump administration has officially launched the Immigration and Customs Enforcement surge in New York City that border czar Tom Homan promised earlier this summer. The operation comes after New York leaders doubled down on sanctuary policies, setting the stage for a growing conflict between state officials and the federal government over immigration enforcement.

Let the IFA community know how to pray for you.

Supporters of the operation argue that sanctuary laws make communities less safe by preventing cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. The administration, meanwhile, says it is increasing its presence in New York to carry out immigration laws despite those restrictions.

From Breitbart:

Homan’s warning came after the Democrat-controlled state legislature passed more sanctuary state laws, some of which place even more restrictions on state law enforcement agencies from working with federal authorities.

“I’m keeping my promise: We’re going to send more ICE agents to New York because you took away the efficiencies of safer arrests at county jails,” Homan added in June.

Now it appears he is following through on his promise. According to NewsNation, ICE launched its new operation in New York on Monday.

The ICE surge was first observed in Queens and is expected to expand into additional boroughs in the coming weeks. According to reports, the agents already assigned to New York are leading the effort, while officials have not yet announced whether personnel from other regions will be deployed. Tom Homan has indicated the operation could continue for more than a month, though he has not publicly outlined its full scope.

The operation reflects the Trump administration’s broader strategy of increasing immigration enforcement in jurisdictions that have adopted sanctuary policies. Federal officials have repeatedly argued that cooperation between local jails and ICE allows dangerous criminal offenders to be transferred safely into federal custody. When those partnerships are restricted, ICE says officers are often forced to make arrests in neighborhoods, workplaces, or other public locations instead.

The ongoing dispute also highlights the constitutional tension between state and federal authority. While states may choose how much they cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, the federal government retains primary responsibility for enforcing immigration law. As more states and cities adopt policies limiting cooperation with ICE, conflicts between Washington and local governments are likely to intensify.

For believers, this debate reaches beyond politics. Scripture calls governments to uphold justice and protect those under their authority, while also reminding Christians to show compassion and pray for wisdom. As immigration remains one of the nation’s most contentious issues, believers can pray for leaders at every level to pursue policies that both uphold the rule of law and reflect God’s heart for truth, order, and mercy.
