As Democratic leaders debate the growing influence of socialism within their party, a recent Fox News interview offered Americans a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of the movement’s top leaders.

Megan Romer, national co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), joined Fox News Sunday after prominent Democrats like James Carville, Rahm Emanuel, and Van Jones warned that the party’s embrace of increasingly progressive candidates could prove politically disastrous. Rather than distancing herself from those concerns, Romer openly defended many of the DSA’s most controversial goals.

The interview began with host Shannon Bream asking Romer about remarks she made at a DSA convention last year. According to Bream, Romer declared that the socialist movement would prevail by making conditions “so intolerable for the ruling class that they would rather give in to our demands than continue to live with the disturbance we cause until we are able to fully seize power ourselves.”

Romer said those comments were directed not just at Republicans, but at what she described as the nation’s “two corporate parties.” She argued that establishment Democrats should be more concerned about voters than about the growing influence of the DSA, pointing to recent victories by socialist-backed candidates in New York and elsewhere.

When asked why Democratic Socialists continue running on the Democratic Party ballot line despite criticism from party leaders, Romer said practical considerations—not ideological loyalty—drive the strategy. She argued that restrictive ballot access laws make third-party campaigns difficult and said the Democratic ballot line is simply the most effective vehicle for advancing the movement’s candidates.

The interview then turned to the DSA’s official platform, revealing just how sweeping the organization’s long-term vision is.

Asked whether the DSA supports abolishing the U.S. Senate, Romer answered, “True.” She described the Senate as an outdated institution that should be replaced with a single legislative chamber. She also affirmed that the organization wants to replace the presidency and the Supreme Court as Americans know them today.

On immigration, Romer offered an equally sweeping vision. She reaffirmed the DSA’s support for abolishing ICE and ultimately eliminating national borders while granting amnesty to those in the country illegally. Although she described those goals as part of a long-term plan rather than an immediate policy, she maintained that migration is largely the result of American foreign policy and argued that a different economic system would eventually reduce the need for border enforcement.

Romer also defended eliminating much of the Pentagon, shifting ownership of most large corporations into public hands, and fundamentally transforming the nation’s criminal justice system. She said the DSA ultimately envisions abolishing prisons as they currently exist, arguing that many crimes stem from poverty and that a different social order would dramatically reduce incarceration. When pressed about violent criminals such as murderers and rapists, she acknowledged that some individuals would still need to be separated from society but suggested future systems would prioritize safety over punishment.

The interview comes amid growing public disagreement within the Democratic Party over the direction of its platform. Veteran Democratic strategists have warned that positions such as open borders, abolishing law enforcement agencies, and defunding institutions have repeatedly failed with voters. Nevertheless, the DSA continues to gain influence in Democratic primaries, particularly in deep-blue districts where its candidates have recently defeated establishment incumbents.

For many Americans, the interview provided a clear look at the goals of one of the country’s most influential socialist organizations. While many of these proposals remain politically unlikely in the near term, Romer’s willingness to defend them on national television underscores that they are not fringe internet talking points but stated objectives embraced by the DSA’s leadership.

As socialist candidates continue winning Democratic primaries, voters will increasingly have to decide whether these ideas represent the future direction of the Democratic Party or remain the agenda of a vocal ideological faction seeking to reshape American government and society.
