ICE Releases Details After Fatal Maine Shooting
On Monday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement released new information about a fatal officer-involved shooting in Biddeford, Maine. The agency said the incident occurred during an attempt to stop an illegal immigrant with a final order of removal. State and federal officials are now investigating the shooting.

From the Daily Wire:
The agency, which waited nearly 12 hours after the shooting to release any details, said that the incident took place around 7 a.m. local time when agents were “conducting targeted surveillance on the last known address of an illegal alien with a final order of removal.”
An illegal immigrant left the residence in a vehicle before ICE agents “attempted to conduct a vehicle stop.” When the driver “attempted to flee,” an officer “fearing for public safety” then fired his weapon, ICE said.
“The driver of the vehicle was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted. He passed away from his injuries,” ICE said.
The Biddeford Police Department, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General are involved in reviewing the incident. ICE described the investigation as ongoing and said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Early reports have differed on some details surrounding the shooting. According to CNN, initial statements from the Office of the Maine Attorney General said the driver was attempting to flee “in the direction of the officer” when the shooting occurred. ICE’s public statement, however, did not say the vehicle was driven toward officers, underscoring that investigators are still working to establish the full sequence of events.
The man who was killed was identified by local officials as a 26-year-old Colombian national. CNN also reported that Senator Angus King of Maine said Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told him the man was not the agents’ intended target, though the circumstances surrounding that statement remain part of the developing story. The shooting follows another fatal ICE officer-involved shooting in Houston just days earlier, and both incidents have prompted protests.
As Christians, we care about both justice and the sanctity of human life. Scripture calls governing authorities to uphold order while reminding believers that every person bears God’s image and deserves dignity. As investigators determine exactly what happened, let us pray for truth to come to light, for wisdom and integrity throughout the investigation, for the safety of law enforcement officers, and for peace in communities affected by these events.
