Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas delivered a bold warning in a speech at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law this week, arguing that modern progressivism is fundamentally incompatible with the God-given principles that founded the United States.

From Breitbart:

During the address, Thomas traced the rise of progressivism in the American mainstream to the beginning of the 20th century and identified President Woodrow Wilson as its most prominent advocate.

Thomas said progressivism had “made many inroads into our system of government and our way of life” since Wilson’s presidency and asserted that it stood in opposition to the Declaration.

“It has coexisted uneasily with the principles of the Declaration because it is opposed to those principles,” Thomas stated. “It is not possible for the two to coexist forever.”

Justice Thomas explained how progressivism holds that America should “leave behind the principles of the founding and catch up with the more advanced and sophisticated system of relatively unimpeded state power.” As intercessors know, however, this proposed solution would only serve to harm our nation.

Throughout his speech, Justice Thomas made clear that abandoning the nation’s founding principles opens the door to greater government control and the erosion of freedom. His warning is not merely historical—it is a call to recognize the consequences of turning away from God as the source of our rights.

From The Federalist:

In closing his remarks, the senior justice said that Americans will come upon moments in their lives that require them to possess the same devotion that the founders displayed in their time. While these incidents may be challenging and contain high risks, he encouraged listeners to do what is right, stand by principle, and “respond with courage.”

“Channel the courage of the men who faced down a king and signed [the Declaration], or a president who led the nation in a civil war rather than permit this house to be divided by the great contradiction of slavery,” Thomas said. “Take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure, and with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, let us mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

Justice Thomas’ closing words serve as a direct charge to the American people. In a time when standing for truth often comes with a cost, he called on citizens to reject fear, resist compromise, and boldly uphold the principles that have sustained the nation since its founding.

As the United States celebrates 250 years of independence this year, it is the perfect time to stand boldly for the values our nation was founded on. As Justice Thomas said, let’s channel the courage of those who came before us and stand for God-given freedom in America!
