American Athletes Display Unapologetic Patriotism at the Olympics
On Sunday, the 2022 Winter Olympics came to a close. That same day, America defeated Canada to win the gold medal in ice hockey. And, as they celebrated their victory, our players displayed a refreshing sense of patriotism and love for the U.S.
Who is praying on the wall?
From Breitbart:
President Donald Trump called the U.S. men’s hockey team, and FBI Director Kash Patel joined them in the locker room to celebrate their win over Canada on Sunday.
…
Team captain Auston Matthews described what it was like to get a call from the president after they beat Canada 2-1 in overtime.
“We’re all proud Americans, obviously,” he said. “This is a huge moment for us, a huge moment for the United States. [Trump] called. Just congratulated us … It’s an honor to wear this jersey and represent the U.S. To go home with a gold medal, you know how much that means to guys in this room, to people watching and rooting us on, too.”
Matthews added, ““I think there’s a lot of moving parts as far as our travels back home. We’ll kind of see what happens, but obviously it’s an honor to wear this jersey and to represent the U.S. To go home with a gold medal, I mean, you know how much that means to the guys in this room and how much it means to all the people watching and rooting us on, too.”
Matthews wasn’t the only athlete to celebrate America. Quinn Hughes, another player on the American team, thanked the brave men and women in our military, telling reporters, “I know there were a lot of troops also watching, and they allowed us to play this game.” Secretary of War Pete Hegseth highlighted this quote, claiming it demonstrated perspective, appreciation, and patriotism. Hughes also praised America earlier in the Olympics, saying, “I love the U.S., and it’s the greatest country in the world. So, I’m happy to represent here with these guys, and it was very special.”
The hockey team wasn’t the only team demonstrating a love for America, however. According to the Daily Wire, team USA women’s figure skater Alysa Liu defied incredible odds to become the first American women to win Olympic gold in twenty years. While Liu may not have openly praised America like the hockey players, her story embodies the American dream.
Liu’s father, Arthur Liu, was born and raised in China. Arthur witnessed and was outraged by the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, and he was eventually forced to flee China out of fear of persecution. Arthur was able to find freedom in America and, years later, his daughter went on to win gold in the Olympics.
Not every American athlete was this patriotic. For example, Freestyle Skier Hunter Hess said it was “a little hard” to represent America, and that doing so “brings up mixed emotions.” However, it’s encouraging to see that so many athletes are unashamed of our beautiful country and proud to represent it.
