Intercessors, do you realize how powerful your impact is? Whether you faithfully hold the line on state prayer calls, gather in person, or pray on-site, you are making a big difference in this nation. Even if there are things in this nation we do not approve of, can you imagine how much worse it would be if it weren’t for people like us who have committed themselves to standing in the gap for America and its leaders? I pray you walk away from this article with a fresh wind in your sails, knowing that IFA appreciates you, and that you can take your prayers further by putting some action behind them.

Every month, IFA offers you the chance to participate in the Capitol Connections campaign. At the beginning of the month, you can download content with guided prayer points for the elected officials in your state. This is step one. The next step involves your action. It encourages you to send a card to your State Reps or other elected officials. Share a scripture or a short thank-you and let them know someone is praying for them. It may not seem like much to you, but you don’t know how much that can mean to our leaders.

Because of their position, I think people are quick to forget they are also human, like us. They have marriages and families to tend to as well. They bear the burden of their office, and what comes with it, including burnout, health issues, slander, immense pressure, and anything that we can face; they do too, just at a greater level because they are men and women of influence. 

Here’s an encouraging story from someone just like you. Sherry Dawson, Kentucky intercessor, has been participating in IFA’s Capitol Connections for some time now. She uses the prayer guides to pray over the leadership in her state. She has also been sending cards faithfully every month to her state’s leaders on behalf of IFA Kentucky. To Sherry’s delight, she received two responses. One was a printed letter from the White House. President Trump responded, saying he and Melania were thankful for people like her who pray for them, and that it is a great encouragement to them. Isn’t that amazing?

Now, whether it came from his team or him is beside the point. The point is, President Trump and First Lady Melania know that people are praying for them. Sherry also received a personal handwritten letter from the Majority Whip in her state. He not only thanked her but also concluded his letter with, “Please continue to pray for me.” Isn’t that beautiful? Your leaders covet prayers. A similar thing happened in Wisconsin last year, and it was due to Capitol Connections. You can read that story here. 

Have you ever had someone reach out to let you know they were praying for you, out of the blue? Didn’t you feel encouraged and blessed to know that God provided someone to cover you?

It’s no different for our state leaders. There is no shortage of those who criticize them, send angry emails or phone calls, especially if they stand for Biblical values. It’s a lot easier to criticize than it is to encourage, and it’s easier to dishonor than it is to honor, so let’s turn the tide!  

Let’s cover our leaders with prayer. Let’s flood our State Capitols with prayer cards of gratitude, scriptures, and words of encouragement, so they know someone is praying for them. You never know how much impact it could have on their lives or what kind of doors it could open. 

I planted the seed, and Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So, neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow (1 Corinthians 3:6-7). 

Father, we thank you for faithful intercessors who are stepping out in faith. We pray that, as intercessors, “plant seeds” through prayer and engagement, that You will water those seeds so they will grow in the lives of our leaders. Bless Capitol Connections and use it to open doors for fostering relationships between intercessors and leaders. We pray that our elected officials, through every letter they receive, will be overcome at the thought that someone is praying for them and that God cares about them, in Jesus’ name, amen.
