As one election ends, another begins. While the midterms may still seem far away, blue and red states alike are preparing for a smattering of elections by fighting a brutal redistricting war.

When Californians voted to pass Proposition 50 this week, it did more than give Democrats additional House seats. It also launched a new phase of the redistricting wars.

The ballot measure itself marked an escalation in the fight. The California Democratic Party put forth the measure as “a direct response to a Republican power grab orchestrated by President Trump and state leaders in Texas, who redrew congressional district lines to gain five more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom celebrated Proposition 50’s passage in explicitly partisan terms Tuesday night, boasting that “in every critical category, Donald Trump is underwater.”

Proposition 50 was the Democrat’s latest shot in the redistricting fight, but Republicans are refusing to accept defeat. The Daily Wire notes that the California Republican Party sued on Wednesday to block the passes proposition.

California is not, however, the only state seeing a redistricting battle play out. The Daily Wire notes that Missouri has adopted a new congressional map that will likely add a Republican seat to the House, while North Carolina Republicans are pushing for an additional red seat as well. Ohio, meanwhile, was required to do mid-decade restricting, leading to a map that will give Republicans an advantage.

On the other hand, California is also not the only state facing a legal battle. According to the Daily Wire, a Supreme Court case, Louisiana v. Callais, “could scrap a section of the Voting Rights Act,” potentially giving Republicans up to 19 House seats.

Even with all the efforts, experts expect Republicans to ultimately come out on top in the redistricting war.
