As the shutdown continues, many are worried about our service men and women in the military working without pay. According to Congressional aides, lawmakers would have to pass a bill by Monday, October 13, to ensure that our troops are paid promptly on October 15.

As in past shutdowns, troops continue reporting to work as their roles are considered essential for national security.

President Trump has said he would support a separate bill to get the troops paid until the Senate dispute is resolved with a continuing resolution.

“We’ll take care of it,” Trump said Wednesday. “Our military is always going to be taken care of.”

President Trump previously promised members of the military that they would be paid despite the shutdown. Speaking last weekend at an event celebrating the Navy’s 250th anniversary, he said, “I want you to know that, despite the current Democrat-induced shutdown, we will get our service members every last penny.”

The President is not the only work working to get our troops paid. Representative Jennifer Kiggans introduced the Pay Our Troops Act last month, but it didn’t pass before the shutdown. The legislation would have authorized “continuing appropriations for military pay during a government shutdown,” according to Breitbart. As it stands, soldiers will receive back pay once the government reopens, but they will serve without pay until then.

Breitbart notes that military members are already taking out loans to make it through expected pay delays. As our service members struggle, let’s pray for a swift end to this shutdown, as well as for God to provide for them!
