Yesterday was the National Day of the People’s Republic of China. And, in celebration of the event, officials in Philadelphia raised the flag of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) at City Hall.

The ceremony marked the CCP’s Oct. 1 National Day and involved a co-organizer with ties to Beijing’s regime, according to The Epoch Times. The event reportedly whitewashes a violent legacy of mass killings, religious crackdowns and cultural destruction that began when Mao Zedong seized power in 1949.

Outside the event, protesters from the Tibetan Association of Philadelphia demanded the city take down the banner.

“The red flag of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is not a symbol of culture; it is the emblem of a brutal, totalitarian regime,” Tsering Jurme, president of the local association, told The Epoch Times. “This regime is responsible for the persecution and murder of millions, the destruction of thousands of monasteries, and the ongoing cultural genocide of my people in Tibet and the Uyghurs in Xinjiang. To fly their flag here in our Philadelphia city hall is to legitimize terror and betray the dissidents who seek freedom.”

Campaign for Uyghurs similarly denounced the flag raising, expressing its discontent in a letter to the city’s mayor. Rushan Abbas, the founder of the group, said the CCP flag represents “mass surveillance, forced sterilizations, and the silencing of dissent.” The Caller also notes that Abbas’ sister, Dr. Gulshan Abbas, was sentenced to 20 years in a Chinese prison.

Elected officials also criticized Philadelphia over hosting this ceremony. Representative John Moolenaar, current chair of the House Select Committee on the CCP, called the event a disgrace to the values enshrined in the Constitution. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania state Senator Doug Mastriano, a longtime friend of IFA, posted about the raising of the flag on social media, writing simply, “The cradle of liberty flying the banner of tyranny.”

This comes at a time when tension between America and China is at an all-time high. The Communist nation has infiltrated our schools, attacked our grid, and plotted with America’s enemies against us. Most recently, the Pentagon ordered American missile suppliers to increase production in preparation for a potential Chinese clash. At a time like this, should our leaders and officials really be raising the CCP’s flag over government buildings?

As tensions continue to rise, let’s pray that China and its corrupt government would have no influence over America!
