Three years ago, a man by the name of Nicholas Roske drove across the nation in a plot to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Now, three years later, his lawyers revealed that he identifies as a transgender woman.

The Department of Justice is recommending that the defendant, 29-year-old Nicholas Roske, be sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempting to kill the Supreme Court justice in 2022, according to a Friday filing outlining the case against Roske. Roske pled guilty to the attempt to kill a United States Supreme Court Justice in April 2025, three years after authorities arrested him in Kavanaugh’s neighborhood, carrying a bag full of weapons and burglary tools.

A filing from Roske’s defense attorneys shows that Roske now goes by “Sophie Roske” and that his legal team will refer to him using female pronouns. A footnote on the filing, obtained exclusively by The Daily Wire, explains that the defense will not use Roske’s legal name “out of respect” for the would-be assassin.

“The case is captioned as United States v. Nicholas John Roske,” lawyers for Roske state. “That name remains Ms. Roske’s legal name, and she has not asked to recaption the case. Out of respect for Ms. Roske, the balance of this pleading and counsel’s in-court argument will refer to her as Sophie and use female pronouns.”

According to the Daily Wire, a source familiar with the story confirmed that this transgender identity isn’t new. Apparently, Roske was using female identities online before the attempted assassination.

Roske’s transgender identity is especially significant when viewed in the context of rising transgender violence across America. In 2023, a transgender man (biological woman) opened fire on a Christian school in Tennessee. Then, earlier this year, a transgender woman (biological male) committed a similar attack on a Christian school in Minnesota. Just weeks after that attack, a radical leftist with a transgender girlfriend (biological boyfriend) shot and killed Charlie Kirk.

These attacks and killings have sparked calls for investigations into transgender violence. The Daily Wire notes that the incoming new U.S. Counterterrorism Plan will address trans violence, and that the Justice Department is considering restricting firearm ownership among trans-identifying individuals.

Roske’s story is also another example of overtly left-wing political violence, as he sought to kill Justice Kavanaugh before he “could vote to overturn Roe v. Wade,” according to the Daily Wire. He was reportedly only able to find the Justice’s address after far left protestors leaked it online in a bid to scare the conservative justices out of voting to overturn Roe v. Wade. Once he made it to Maryland from California, however, Roske called the police to confess his plans.
