The House Select Committee on the CCP recently released a report showing that Chinese nationals with ties to the Chinese military are being educated by American universities. Even worse, these foreign nations have been “conducting federally funded research in sensitive fields.”

American universities are educating thousands of Chinese nationals with ties to the Chinese military — the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), according to findings from a new China Committee report.

Over 400 Chinese nationals at just one of the six universities they investigated were conducting federally funded research in sensitive fields like nuclear engineering and computer science.

At another university, information provided to the committee showed that half of Chinese nationals pursuing a Ph.D. on campus were involved in federally funded research projects.

The Committee investigated six U.S. universities: Maryland, Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Carnegie Mellon, University of Southern California (USA), Purdue, and Stanford. Every single school admitted students from China’s top military and defense research schools.

Many of these schools also collaborated closely with China. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for example, reportedly ran a joint engineering institute with Zhejiang University, a school with ties to Chinese intelligence. Some of these schools were also found to have faculty partnerships and exchange agreements with Chinese schools.

Some of these schools have already taken corrective action. Purdue has reportedly adopted new safeguards to prevent foreign influence, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is terminating dozens of agreements with Chinese schools, including its joint engineering institute with Zhejiang.

It is important to note that, according to Fox, President Trump signed an executive order in 2020 “banning Chinese nationals engaged in military-linked research.” The Committee’s report found that the Biden administration failed to enforce this order, and lawmakers recommend codifying it as one way to protect American military research from falling into the hands of the CCP.
