The New York Post shared the details of 20-year-old Wess Roley’s Sunday attack:

The chaos began around 2 p.m. on Canfield Mountain, just north of Coeur d’Alene, when smoke started pouring from the woods and first responders rushed to the scene — only to be met by a hail of gunfire coming from the trees.

Firefighters quickly realized they’d been lured into a psychotic trap and desperately called for backup, according to terrifying 911 calls they made from the scene.

The fire was left to burn as reinforcements battled to root out the unseen gunman before the gunfire eventually stopped and Roley’s body was tracked down in the trees using cellphone information.

Roley killed two firefighters and injured a third before his death. Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris reportedly claimed at a press conference that it is unknown whether Roley was killed by police or took his own life.

The Post also reports that Roley has a troubled childhood marked by his parents messy divorce. His father was allegedly violent and dangerous, making threats similar to the crime his son carried out over the weekend.

As of now, Roley’s motive is unclear. However, this could have something to do with the assassination culture and normalization of violence plaguing the younger generations today. It wasn’t that long ago that Luigi Mangione, another young man, gunned down a healthcare CEO in cold blood, earning praise and admiration from many of his Gen Z colleagues.

As violent attacks like Roley’s continue, we need to keep praying. Let’s pray for an end to violence in our nation, as well as for people to once again see the value in all human life.

Father, We come humbly to You for You are the only one who can change hearts of hatred into hearts of LOVE. Bring our nation into a heart that loves God, and loves others. Stir a desire to love one another, to respect others to threat one another with kindness, bring us to a place of repentance, confession and back to Your commandments and to our churches. this is awork that I know You desire and can do. We need You and Your blessing . Help us O Lord!!
