From The Hill:
In a post on social media, Trump said he was cutting off negotiations with Canada after its government confirmed it would keep in place a digital services tax despite a recent G7 agreement on such levies.
“Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately. We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period. Thank you for your attention to this matter!,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Digital services taxes are taxes on tech companies from countries where their products are used. Canada is requiring the first payment of its tech tax on Monday, which will charge 3 percent of revenues above $14.57 million, or 20 million Canadian dollars.
Taxing big tech companies who are located in the U.S. but who distribute products and services globally has proven to be tricky. Canada’s taxes have been in the works for some time now, long before the Trump administrations initial wave of tariffs was announced on April 2.
This comes amid negotiations with several countries in the wake of President Trump’s initial tariffs. While China was initially hostile, most of the targeted nations have been eager to negotiate with the President. Now, however, Canada seems to be at odds with the Trump administration.
Will Canada change course and attempt to return to the negotiating table? Only time will tell. For now, let’s pray for wisdom for our leaders in the Trump administration. Let’s ask God to guide them as they seek to use tariffs to bolster America on the global stage.

I was born and raised in California then married a Canadian 35 years ago, so I am a dual citizen of USA and Canada, but live in Canada.
Canadians cross over the border to shop and vacation in the USA, and use all sorts of USA services from Microsoft, Apple cell phones, shop on Amazon, use Zoom, Facebook and Hotmail, Instagram, whatever- and in 35 years I have NEVER HEARD ONE CANADIAN GIVE THANKS to the Americans for innovation and use of technology. Rather they dislike America and talk as they have a chip on their shoulders. Pass this on to the President and to Steve W., etc.: AMERICA SHOULD CUT ALL TECH FROM CANADA. Most Canadians are users in both ways. They are ungrateful and competitive with USA for decades. Still many loyal to UK even.
