Trump Voices Support for Proxy Voting After House Shutdown
Earlier this week, Speaker Johnson shut down the House to avoid a vote on proxy voting. Now, however, President Trump has voiced his support for the measure, causing the Speaker to reach out to the representatives he so strongly disagreed with.
From Fox News. President Donald TrumpĀ said he supports letting new moms in Congress vote by proxy, putting him at odds with House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Do you want state prayer alerts?
“Youāre having a baby, I think you should be able to call in and vote,” Trump told reporters Thursday on Air Force One. “I’m in favor of that.” …
He said he had spoken with Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., one of the lead GOP voicesĀ behind the plan.
Luna and Rep. Brittany Pettersen, D-Colo., are pushing a proposal that would let new parents vote by proxy for 12 weeks while caring for their newborns. …
Johnson, however, has historically opposed proxy voting, previously calling it unconstitutional and warning it was misused under then-SpeakerĀ Nancy Pelosi during COVID. But after Trumpās endorsement, Luna revealed that Johnson reached out to her. …
Update: @SpeakerJohnson has called me after POTUS statement and we discussed limiting the vote to just new moms who cannot physically travel in event of emergency etc. This is smart. Remember: only 13 in US history. Also, this should not have anything to do with the legislationā¦

I think it’s fair and in line with maternity leave at any other job. Praise the LORD for the work ethic of these 2 women that want to be able to do their job while on maternity leave!
As long as any vote made by a member is secure I donāt see a problem ! What would concern me is that this proxy voting is not abused !!!! That being said i personally do not completely trust this body of lawyers !!
The fact that there have been only 13 occasions in our entire history where this would apply, tells me that this is a rare occurrence. I think every baby deserves to be with his/her mom for the first 12 weeks. I don’t have a problem with this. AND….I appreciate that a conservative Republican has stood up for something she strongly believes even though many in her party do not agree. A friend commented to me that Anna Paulina Luna had turned against Republicans because of this stand. I so disagree with that statement. Although there are core values that bind a party together, we do not have to agree on everything. And I’m thankful President Trump took a stand on this. Lord, please help us know when we need to be unified and when it’s okay to have a different opinion. š
I think that limiting this to women who have just given birth and need to be home is a good decision. Putting safeguards in place to prevent abuse should ensure approval.
If it is allowed, proxy voting should be duly secured and unbreachable. There should be security measures to make sure each caller is a valid and legal US citizen, of the proper age to vote and possesses a viable ID to confirm. Congress may also consider giving properly validated legal voters with a voter ID # like we have Driver’s license numbers for legal drivers.
This doesn’t apply to general elections, just to voting in the House of Reps.
I guess I am old fashioned, a baby needs it mother. It also needs to be breast fed for at least the first year of its life–full time. This is the greatest insurance for a child’s future health and life. A pregnant woman does not belong in congress or in any high stress job. She belongs at home with her young children while they need a mother’s nurturing, and her focus. This is one reason we have so many children in crisis today. Mothers have had to work and focus on their jobs instead of nurturing and raising their children who are the future leaders of our world. The woman who rocks the cradle rules the world; not the woman who votes in Congress. Smiles. & Shalom ~ Shalom to all mothers. My highest admiration to you, and my many prayers.
Have to say I agree, Pamela – but the reality is that many do not hold to this commitment, or do not perceive that they are able to do so. I too say shalom to all mothers, at whatever stage in our motherhood – if nothing else praying mommas at any age still have great influence in their children’s lives, even if not acknowledged!
What does the United States Constitution say about this, the real one.
I believe new moms should have proxy voting for 12 weeks
Iām with Johnson on this. If new motherās canāt follow the constitution then they should stay home and leave governing to others. Opens a Pandoraās box. No exceptions.
I understand, but don’t agree. No proxy voting for new mothers. But how are older generation that have disabilities going to vote if they can’t get out? My uncle 104 in Chicago, a veteran still has a good mind? He would surely want to vote. He lives with his daughter. We have to think about disabled. We need to stick together as a party to stay strong.
this is only for members of congress
Yes, melody!! In fact it may only apply to the House of Representatives!!
Six weeks, not 12.
Am I missing something, or does this apply only for members of congress who are new moms and unavailable to be in the chamber at the time of vote? I don’t read it that it has anything with voting in local elections.
It doesn’t have anything to do with local, state, or federal elections.
it seems to me that the compromise that has been advanced at this point would be acceptable to me. Mothers can’t time the delivery of a child precisely and I would like them to have the ability to vote rather than hold up a significant vote. While unlikely, it would be best to allow them to cast a tie breaking vote by secure means without being present. I pray that Father God will provide guidance and direction to the house members.
As a mother, I totally DISAGREE with proxy voting — that’s why we have early voting taking place two weeks before election day. Allowing proxy voting is just another way for fraud voting to take place.
This is not about general elections. This is about voting in Congress.
What about the dad who is needing to be there for the birth for Lamaze…does he get to vote proxy too? I think we might be opening a can of worms here.
Sould have strict guidelines sicknesses that medically documented, new mom ect
Just having birth a new being created in Godās image is a blessing to the mom and the baby. Itās time to brinding with and those months are so important that they fly in no time. In the beginning after birth many things arise and itās important to be available for them. I pray our gracious Father will led the House and all of Congress wisdom as they consider these complex in Jesusā name! Amen!
I disagree. If the People elected you to vote for THEM, it ought to be be done in person, unless you are in the hospital dying. If you cannot plan this type of thing out, then you probably do not belong in the position.
I agree with the new mothers being able to have their time with the newborns for 12 weeks.
I have always thought it would be wonderful to have an area when the babies and mom’s could be for
nursing time.- somewhere in the blding of Senate and Congress.
I do not agree with proxy voting that Pelosi did- and that should never happen again.
I proxy voting is unconstitutional – then they may have to do an amendment to the Constitution for the 12
week new mother and baby time.- for proxy voting.
Sincerely, and prayerfully, Terrie O’Neal
12 weeks, WOW, a little much.
I remember 6 weeks, even 8 weeks if there were special needs.
I am all for compassion.
Just like missing a test at school due to illness, a doctor’s excuse, parents call before the test, and the opportunity to take the test the next day you are in class.
But this situation is not based on one person’s life, it is a large body of people who are effected.
Is a new mother in the same situation as a person with cancer, an auto accident or a bad hair day? This is not acceptable that one person gets to vote and the others do not. They miss the vote, we pray they come back to the body of law makers.
Heavenly Father, please give wisdom to our countries leaders and help us to turn back to You and your word in these times of trouble! As a woman And mother, I know how hormones can affect our mental state and emotions! I realize the precious time of motherhood as a gift given by you to devote this time to nurturing the precious life or lives you have given into our charge. Turn our country back to You and Godly values! We pray in Jesus name amen!
Absolutely do not allow that!
Once again, I do NOT agree with President Trump on Proxy voting. The congress is screwed up enough with people NOT doing the jobs they were hired for. IF a woman is elected to the House or Senate, they know they are to be there for votes, so if they do not want to fulfill their duties we pay way too high of wages for to start with, then they should NOT continue in that job. They work for all of us, not just the district they were elected in as ALL tax payers pay their ludicrous wages and give them too many perks already. IF they want to be stay at home mom and forget they have a responsibility to ALL citizens, then they need to resign and either find a job that is more convenient to them or be a stay at home mom. They can certainly afford a baby sitter, and they can certainly get one to care for that child while they show up to vote in person. Any reason for not being there unless they are in the hospital or dying is just an excuse. No job I have ever had gives 12 weeks of maternity leave, most women have to work right up to a few days before they give birth or to the day they give birth, and then they are only given at most 6 weeks of leave, so this hogwash of elected officials being better than the rest of us is exactly that, hogwash and is NOT acceptable. This is not the only thing President Trump has been dead wrong about, pushing the poison jab was one, and a bad one, endorsing Lindsey Graham another as he is one of the most disliked men in SC as he is as two faced as he can be and speaks with a forked tongue, there are other things President Trump has made bad decisions on or listened to the wrong people advise him, and he will NOT keep his high ratings if he does not step back and re-evaluate quite a few of his weak decisions. As a woman, I find it very unfair to allow someone to proxy vote in Congress at any time. It was a disaster during the fiasco of “covid” and will cause more disaster if allowed now. I do not care which party wants proxy voting it is wrong!!!!
I oppose the proxy voting. I agree with the opinion that measures can be in place for the mother to honor her commitment to congressional duties and her commitment to her child both. Twelve weeks? Outrageous! She was a in Congress when she got pregnant, knowing she is still supposed to vote. Get a sitter or resign from Congress. When I was working back in the 70’s, it was audacious enough to give the benefit of maternity leave. So what comes next? Paternity leave! Now we have the men and women both demanding bonding time with the newborn. How about skipping a golf game in order to bond with the baby? Not likely.
I believe that as long as it is used just for mothers and not expanded,it is a good rule.
Personally and for religious reasons I do not feel it is best for the country to have women congressmen. I find it disruptive in more ways than one. It is no good for women either. God created woman to complete the man not compete with him and take his job away from him. A man with no purpose, usually in his JOB, will find he has no purpose for women either. How sad! How tragic for all of society!
Wow, Reverend. I think you are following a traditional view of women rather than looking at Godās view of women from Genesis through Revelation. God had no problem with women in leadership (ie Deborah as Judge). In the New Testament, in Christ there is no male or female, Greek nor Jew. We were designed by God to co-reign in life with men.
Using your own logic, I can argue that without women in Congress, men will not arrive at complete decisions. We are not less than men.
While I donāt support proxy voting or extended maternity leave, I believe that women should not be excluded from serving in Congress.
I agree with you concerning the fact that women have made important contributions to society in leadership roles. Iām curious, though, was sex discrimination the reason why women were denied the right to vote in US elections until the 20th century? Is patriarchy wrong on its face?
What is a woman? Can only women have babies? If Congress cannot define biology, then they cannot make a rule regarding genders.
This is something we see in all states, the confusion of gender and the chaos that results.
Until Congress defines “mother” as a biologically born woman who birthed a baby, this discussion is mute.
GOD created WOMEN FROM ONE MANS RIB, ADAM & EVE!
NOTHING NEEDS TO BE PROVEN,THIS IS FACT. GOD TOOK DUST OF GROUND CREATED MAN, BREATHED LIFE INTO HIS NOSTRILS. READ GODS WORD IN GENESIS FOR FACTS! GOD CREATED US ALL IN HIS IMAGE
Staci, Laura isn’t arguing the facts of biology. She is simply pointing out that Congress shouldn’t be talking out of both sides of their mouth. Proper definitions must be stated, since some of them are confused about gender being male/female, or it is moot. Gender isn’t fluid, so it cannot be used according to your ideological agenda – “male/female” in this case, and “whatever you identify as” in other cases.
I agree with Speaker Johnson. Once we allow women with newborns to vote by proxy it will be a slippery slope to keep extending the proxy allowances to others. If in almost 250 years this hasnāt been needed, I donāt think we should start now .
TOTALLY AGREE!
It seems to me, we have slid down enough slippery slopes. Don’t want any more!
The public servants volunteered and swore and Oath bound to the Trust Indenture Contract, Constitution(s) to serve the People. Breach of Trust Contract to not strictly adhere to the expressly written Constitution(s). Where in the Constitution did the People grant authority to public servants to proxy vote? The Constitutions are the law. Maxim of Law: The law is not to be violated by those in government. Maxim of Law: Good faith demands that what is agreed upon shall be done. Maxim of Law: A delegated power cannot be again delegated. A deputy cannot have (or appoint) a deputy.
Prayer for We The People learn the fundamental principles, Bible, Maxins of Law, Constitution(s) to keep our Republic by frequent recurrence to fundamental principles. In Jesus Christ’s matchless name, Amen š
Thank you for these thoughts.
If the rule is clear that a female member can ONLY vote via secure video connection for 12 weeks around the birth of a child, then I would support this. However, reality being what it is, it is almost certain to be extended for any silly reason that could be considered fair and equal, to apply to illnesses, paternity claims, etc, etc. It’s another slippery slope the democrats will turn into a superhighway, so no I don’t support this. At least, not without lots of safeguards and iron clad rules.
Father God, You are all wisdom, and we ask you to insert Yourself in this decision-making process. Only You can make such an issue good and fair for all involved, including the American people. They will be done, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Honestly, because of sin and women’s rights. Women in some very important positions have cause the rules and laws to be changed or relaxed thus opening a can of worms and in some cases weaking the institutions, as in the case of our military, training standards had to be lowered and not as rigid to allowed women in combat thus allowing transgender.
It is a known fact women are more sympathetic than men (most not all) therefore giving into their emotions.
Everyone has an opinion, and has the right to express that opinion. That’s what is great about being American. Please, Lord, may Your will be done in this issue.
When the constitution was written women were not in the mix for voting. Now we have women and this should be allowed. A mom of 3 boys and Nana to 8 rugrats š
It seems like anything like this ends up being twisted and misused – usually by the Dems.
Remember no work no pay.
I do not agree. If a woman wants to have a baby, then she should not run for office. She should make a choice. After she has her baby and is ready to do the people’s work and only then should she run for office. It is unfair to the people who elected her to run for office and unfair to the baby to try to do both have a baby and represent her district.
President Trump is misguided on this issue. I agree with MTG and Johnson. It can too easily be misused like what Pelosi did.
Luna left the house Freedom Caucus over this, saying they were mean and hateful. That’s looney. This says a lot about her. Not what we were led to believe.
I think Luna is wrong and I agree with Johnson. It will definitely be abused, especially by Democrats and self seeking politicians. Why does she want to attach it to a bill thatās gonna take care of some problems I donāt understand. It could be taken care of at a later date. Here we go again Congress will sit on their buns and do nothing and argue about trivial things. In the real world parents get a few weeks off and then theyāre back at work. Stand strong on the wall and invite others and trust in God. ššš
The issue isn’t the issue.
Coming together in one accord is the issue.
A house divided cannot stand.
Lord we pray for our congress and our nation as You prayed for Your people, “Father, make them one as We are one.”
Lord, revive US, restore US, one last time to show the world what You will do for a nation whose God is the Lord.
Your will be done, on earth, in our hearts, our homes, Your Church, as it is in heaven.
Thank You.
We love You, forever.
Amen.
Doug, I am all for Godly unity, but Yeshua’s prayer was for His people for it is only “within” the body of Christ that we can become one. And even that is a miracle!! There are two distinct kingdoms at work within our nation – the Kingdom of God (Light, Yeshua, Heaven, etc.) – and the kingdom of Satan (darkness, evil, hell, etc.). There is enmity between these kingdoms. We are not a theocracy, but a constitutional republic. Reasonable people, whether saved or not, can and have in the past come into periodic agreement, mostly because of YHVH’s Sovereign intervention. May that happen in this day. However, the voice of reason and sanity has dimmed greatly in our nation. May it be restored. I too pray Your will be done! I too love You forever, YHVH!!
Good idea on new Moms to stay home with their small babies and vote from home.
Any ruling meads wisdom from God to address the issues that come from proxy voting. If medical reason is given a form should be created for a doctor or medical professional to sign and submit with vote!
A high cost penalty should be in-forced for anyone falsifying such a situation.
That form should be online radically available to print out or signed and submitted by medical staff. So shutins can get support to vote..
praying for a way they all can see to work this out.
New moms can typically get out for short trips and can vote in most cases. Also, most states offer early voting which extends the voting options. I think proxy voting is too risky.
Michelle, this is about Congressional voting.
Thank-you Father God, that the people involved in the dispute were able to speak to each other and come to an agreement,
Amen, that is the key, for a house divided cannot stand
I have not read the proposal so I am not sure what exactly is in it. I believe, due to the current availability of technology that a representative should be able to vote via zoom if there is a compelling reason they canāt be there in person. The vote should not be āproxyā where someone else votes for them. The vote has to be able to be validated as theirs so that they can be held accountable.
12 weeks is way too long. In the real world, mothers have to do their jobs, and the body doesn’t usually take 12 weeks to heal from a birth.
I agree with limiting the vote to just new moms who cannot physically travel in event of emergency etc.
If proxy voting is only for new moms & for only 12 week period, I am ok with it as long as they are on video while casting their vote. And the voting session should be recorded in the event the person changes their mind on how they voted.
Proxy voting is allowing someone ELSE to cast a vote in your absence, it is not voting by zoom or personally by technology. Lots of difference there. NO proxy voting should ever be allowed, that is why the constitution is written as it is! Either we follow it as it has served this country very well and is the very foundation of this country or we throw the entire thing out the window and let havoc reign.
I agree, Elizabeth!
For new moms, not new dads, and those stuck in heavy storms back home, they should be permitted to call in their vote. It’s equivalent to a zoom meeting and they are very commonplace now, just don’t abuse it.
It it right thing to do for the new Mothers as long as it is for them only and not a way to add on more that this is or should not be about!
Yikes! Proxy voting would make a joke of the process, and it would weaken our system. I like Maureen’s suggestion of absentee voting.
Pray for Trump.
I agree completely with President Trump in the proxy vote matter. Most employers in the United States honor a time of maternity leave and there is nothing wrong with allowing it in the U. S. House. As a nation our government and its elected members must work together. As long as proxy voting is not abused it should be allowed. Pray for our U. S. House and its leadership.
No proxy votes!! That resolution includes proxy votes for more than just new moms. No!
If its ONLY for new Moms…yes
No, definitely not by proxy. It was misused in the past by the democrats during covid. The democrats know how to get around everything in order to get their agendas passed. It seems that telephone could be abused, but with zoom, the face would be shown and a password required to verify identity for this one vote, and get a verbal vote, and require written verification also. The issue though is that once this door is opened, we know from experience that it will be abused. If it is allowed it should be very narrowly written so that it does not apply to whatever situation is “inconvenient”.
Wouldn’t it be easier for an expectant or new mom to vote absentee??
Quiet I believe it opens up the door to Pandora’s box.. again!
Sadly, Pres. Trump doesn’t understand “proxy voting” if he thinks it means phoning in a vote. Proxy voting allows unelected individuals (spouses, friends, favorite bar tenders, etc..) to vote instead of elected Mom. I have no problem with “Zoom call” voting IF NECESSARY.
