Tennessee legislators have now passed a school choice bill, sending it to the Governor’s desk. Praise the Lord!

From The Daily Wire. The Tennessee legislature approved a school choice bill on Thursday, sending the long-sought legislation to Governor Bill Lee’s desk to be signed into law.

Pray for your fellow intercessor.

The bill, the Education Freedom Act, is a key victory for the governor after efforts to pass the legislation last year fell short. The state General Assembly passed the bill in a 54 to 44 vote on Thursday, a day after the Senate approved it 20 to 13, according to The Tennessean. …

The bill will have limited impact at first and ramp up in later years. For the 2025-2026 school year under the bill, the state will offer 20,000 scholarships of about $7,300 each. Parents can apply for the scholarship and use the funds toward tuition, books, and other education-related expenses. Half of the scholarships will have an income requirement to be eligible.

The program will grow by 5,000 additional scholarships offered in the 2026-2027 school year. Both public and private school attendees are eligible to apply. …

Tennessee Stands (conservative Christian organization) did not think it was a good Bill. It gives the government more control over private schools & even home school. TN Stands also thinks the government will also pay tuition for illegal alien children. tennesseestands.org

The devil is always in the details. Here in Indiana, there is discussion around school choice. Some see language in proposed legislation as a means for further government control hidden in details. Whereas the name of the bill, or the stated purpose is for greater freedom for parents, better education through competition of choice, etc, deep in the sub-clauses, there are conditions that actually disempower and curtail those objectives.

Not saying TN is doing that. Only saying we are all learning to pay more rigorous attention to what our elected officials, and their supporting agencies are actually doing.

Lord, we thank you for making this option available to parents in school districts with failing schools. We ask for your guidance and assistance for all administrative offices concerned to bring true fulfillment to this hope for better educational opportunities for all children. Please assist parents in transportation and additional fees needed and for acceptance of theses children by their peers. Amen
