After a tense and chaotic week, the House managed to pass a spending package hours ahead of a deadline that would have brought a government shutdown. However, after pushing omnibus bills and compromising with Democrats, Speaker Johnson’s future in the House has been called into question. Will he be able to retain his position next month?
From The Hill. The House approved legislation to avert a government shutdown hours before the deadline on Friday, sending the bill to the Senate for consideration after a whirlwind week on Capitol Hill.

The chamber voted 366-34-1 in support of the legislation, clearing the two-thirds threshold needed for passage, since GOP leadership brought the bill to the floor under the fast-track suspension of the rules process. All Democrats except one — Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), who voted present — joined 170 Republicans in voting yes. …
The package — which Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) rolled out shortly before the vote — would fund the government at current levels through March 14, extend the farm bill for one year and appropriate billions of dollars in disaster relief and assistance for farmers.
The legislation does not, however, include language to increase the debt limit, an eleventh-hour demand from President-elect Trump that hurled a curveball into the sensitive government funding negotiations. …
House passage of the government funding plan marks the culmination of a tumultuous three days on Capitol Hill. Republicans cycled through four different spending proposals, grappled with the influence of Trump and Elon Musk and, for some, grew increasingly frustrated with Johnson’s handling of the situation.
It is just a preview of what is expected to be a chaotic period in Washington, with Republicans poised to hold a slim majority in the House and GOP lawmakers preparing to legislate at the whims of the incoming Trump administration.
In the short term, meanwhile, questions are mounting about whether Johnson will be able to keep hold of the gavel on Jan. 3, when he takes his Speaker nomination to the House chamber for a floor vote. Johnson can only afford to lose a handful of Republicans during that vote. …
The funding deal cleared on Friday was the fourth proposal Johnson unveiled throughout the government funding debacle.
First, he rolled out a bipartisan, bicameral package negotiated by top lawmakers that would extend funding through March 14 while also including a number of extraneous policy provisions. The Speaker, however, never brought it to the floor amid Trump’s opposition.
Next came a proposal to fund the government until mid-March and suspend the debt limit for two years, an attempt to cater to Trump’s fourth-quarter demand. Democrats and a group of Republicans, however, torpedoed that measure, sending Johnson back to the drawing board.
On Friday morning, lawmakers floated splitting the funding package into three components to hold separate votes on a continuing resolution, disaster aid and assistance for farmers that would be considered under a procedural rule. But after a closed-door conference, Johnson opted for the single spending bill that included disaster aid and assistance for farmers, moving to consider it under the fast-track process. …
And after a quick caucus meeting, several House Democrats said they would back the measure.
A bulk of the funding in the stopgap plan would go toward disaster aid, with about $100 billion in relief amid increased bipartisan pressure in both chambers following hurricanes Helene and Milton. …

I’m confused by it all! I honestly can’t tell which end is up! God is not the author of confusion!
My prayer continues to be that our leaders will stop asking our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many future generations to pay (many times over) for our foolishness unrestrained expenditures.
I do not agree with this. As a former government worker, I lived through one government shutdown. It is NOT the end all crisis people paint it to be. Our country is beyond over extended. We need strong men and women with the courage to do the difficult thing and change the government’s out of control spending. Rather than pray we avoid difficulty (like a shutdown), I pray God gives us the strength and the provision to do what He wants us to do. Rather than pray Man does not lose his comfort in earthly treasures, I pray Man would turn to God for comfort and experience His provision. May the Lord forgive our complacency and instead fill us with the Holy Spirit fire to seek Him and do what is necessary rather than what is comfortable. I especially pray for Mike Johnson and those in government whose mindset is to preserve man’s comfort at all costs. Send a message of revelation to Johnson and those in Congress that will make clear what needs to be done. May Johnson care more about what YOU think than what man thinks. Cast down the voices that speak against You Lord, fill the chambers with Your hope and Your truth. In Jesus Name Amen .
Yes, it is concerning that Trump wants to increase the debt ceiling and did not campaign on a promise to lower our debt.

The Bible Story of God and His family has de-railed a few times, but with His plan of Salavation as we became a Christian-we have followed His plans in the Word of God (the Bible). Alot of people have not connected Earth is a portion of His KINGDOM. So God released His Government Through The Family He created. God wanted us to be a part of His nature. God released His Will , ways, righteousness, and love on “earth through governmental authority-at every level and also through humans His family. I know Mike J. loves God but He does not reflect Gods Image of a strong leader. We are a part of God through JESUS -as a solution. God -over the years the churches have elimnated parts of teaching that should be highly important. It was years before I realized -the authority- “WE have authority and God given right to receive and use Gods power that flows from the Indwelling of Holy Spirit”. to have more responsible legislators and people in Congress and that will read the bill they’re passing way ahead of time no more last minute decisions, contemplated and presented to the public before voted on in Congress and give an opportunity for Americans to see what is in the bill that will affect them specially.. we pray we always look to God for guidance and Truth as a nation. Thank you so much that God has given love in the hearts of others to care not to give their help when they are in desperate need as with the floods especially. Help the flood relief money to go exactly where it’s intended to go to help others immediately in their need.

This is a comment: the process that Congress had to go through is definitely difficult. Even so, I would hardly call Trump’s input to the bill a whim. A man who is President elect definitely knows the problems of transitioning and would not carelessly speak into the process. I commend Johnson and the Congress members for listening to his input whether approved or not. I also pray agreement asking for God’s intervention for a cabinet honoring the Lord.
I guess Johnson isn’t much better than the previous speaker, McCarthy. Such a shame, we know the democrats have been leaning toward socialism snd in the past 20 years have put that agenda onto warp speed. Then Boehner and Ryan while speaker fail the American people especially Ryan. He has made sure he is well off now. Then there is McCain who said he would vote to remove the unconstitutional obomacare then did not because he was mad at Trump. I want to remind everyone that some of the biggest expenses for our government are Social Security and Medicare, which ironically are both social programs. I am not saying I support socialism or more social programs but trying to introduce a reality fix. Something has to be done to lower our debt and at the moment, it can’t be military spending because our military has been in decline, and we are facing the reality of a worldwide conflict. But changes have to be made, and Trump has avoided coming up with a plan.
The whole thing was stupid and I felt like we were being swindled again. No normal company is handing out $50k salary increases and no normal American or American company is seeing their health insurance improve. So, why did Congress think these, along with all the Covid and Bio lab junk would be ok with any of us? So out of touch.
Father God, is it ok that I wanted the shutdown? I’ve been praying for the past four+ years that everybody in D.C. would leave everything exactly as it is in their offices, walk out the door and go home. We the people will be in touch when and if and for what reasons we need you (and they probably won’t include resuming your former “job”). God, you know all things and all things are possible with you. We declare a sound government is coming to the United States – one that truly reflects You and your desires that all people enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I’ve lived through a few shutdowns and they didn’t hurt anyone. I welcome a shutdown of our government. They waste time and dollars like there is no tomorrow. Doing the right thing, now that would be novel of our congress.
What is wrong with a shut down, 36 trillion debt. While the Democrats try to push unlawful bills. Thanks to Musk who spotted them. The snakes are regrouping. Biden and his administration has sold the American people out to China. It’s a matter of when we will see terrorism and attacks in US soil.

As my husband and I prayed earlier yesterday, it was made very clear that a spirit of witchcraft was wreaking havoc up there. It successfully divided Trump from the Speaker Mike Johnson, made Johnson the scapegoat, showed more the Rinos at work, and the flesh operating through man’s weakness.
No one but God knows how people like Speaker Johnson, imperfect as he is, how his family and children may have been threatened if he did not “comply”……
That the Dems showed no dissent is the most concerning of all. We are in big trouble folks, still, as a nation. The government has shut down before and the sky did not “fall down” upon us.” May God have mercy still, and give us greater discernment in these things!

I personally don’t care if there is a pause because congress doesn’t get a raise.
I doubt that federal government over-spending will be fixed in a day, a week, or, even, a month.
The situation tends toward feeding frustration. Forces are at work who seem determined to promote frustration, leading to reaction, vocal outburst, anger, disputes, etc.. and, ultimately, withdrawal of God’s people from our godly responsibility to be salt and light in all areas of creation, including government. Galatians 5:19-21 instructs us against these reactions of the flesh.
Once again, it is time to walk in the Spirit. It will produce different fruit (Galatians 5:22-25), even reformation of civil government.
To my understanding, the Funding bill still includes $100 billion in discrepancy spending for the demented Joe Karl Marx Biden to waste on foreign aid, green projects and contracts for Democrat donors which is nothing more than graft and fraud. This is not a bill that represents the wishes of the American people, this must stop immediately.

Last time they shut down, they sent the nonessential employees home. Ninety nine percent of government employees were defined as nonessential. This bloated, blustering bureaucracy needs to be pared down DRASTICALLY.
They stop working, basically take a vacation until the shutdown ends, then get all the backpay as if they worked all that time. That is why the shutdown does cost us heavily, not to mention the start-up costs for military projects that were in mid-production. But it would also stop some of the wasteful spending by the current administration over the next month. That is what I have been told by former military, recently retired.
We cannot imagine that “last minute” votes are happenstance. We need to know that the Lord is protecting us at critical points. Yes, in so many occasions, the Lord lets our own fleshly endeavors to have their own consequences, but the Lord of mercy steps in in many merciful moments.
We actually did not want this to pass. We want single bills. Who cares if they shut down. We need to hold our stance and not get pushed around by their threats. Dems won this one. Even though a lot got taken off they still got what they wanted. We want single bills voted on one at a time. Period.

Our government would not have collapsed; that’s been proven before. Speaker Johnson is a disappointment. It’s not the first time he did not include the entire conference & has struck a “deal” behind closed doors.
I am new to IFA & if this represents their typical ‘news,’ I don’t know if I will continue. This is certainly not what I expected.
I do not think Mike Johnson will be the Speaker of the House. Praying for someone who knows exactly what the American people want and voted for. Praying!
Exactly what the American people want??? Trump won the popular vote by 2%. Many voted for Trump because it was either Harris or him, so they didn’t have a choice. In the primaries, many Republicans voted for other candidates. So, many Republicans and certainly Democratics don’t support MAGA’s agenda 100%. So, I assume you mean what Trump’s base wants which actually represents a small percentage of Americans.
I think MAGA has to get use to the idea of compromise.

Nobody cares about the “popular vote”. He won the electoral college vote, which is what counts here in America, by a landslide. We aren’t in any mood to compromise with baby killers, and all the rest of that sick agenda.
Trump has no plan to make changes to the way abortions are handed. DEI issues are being addressed, but the issues we have to deal with are bigger than just those two issues. There is economic policies. There is nothing inheritably Godly about tariffs. They are an economic tool and while MAGA supports whatever Trump wants (which changes), there are doubts in other corners. Then there is international diplomacy. There is no Godly principles which support MAGA’s wanting to give part of Ukraine to Putin, in fact, it is the opposite. I could go on.

Anyone who reads the Bible can’t help but notice that it is honest. This is because God values truth which is actually what good journalism is about. You want sources which state the facts honestly, just like the Bible states the facts, and you want all the facts, not just some, which means you hear from both sides. It is deeply disturbing that both on the right and left, the public seeks out sources that tell them what they want to hear. There is nothing Godly about this, and it is the reason why many have no idea what is going on.
I agree with the many comments that the passage of last minute spending bills is just business as usual, kicking the debt can down the road a few months. Nothing was accomplished other than scare tactic headlines and increasing our debt which is already incomprehensible.
I pray that the next Congress will be different, but I won’t hold my breath.

Well we learned this week the Republicans apparently have NO TEAM. Finger pointing at each other undermines any power they really should have after this mandate they have been given. Really good to know and a pre-emptor on how to PRAY for the LORD’S HELP for the upcoming new Administration. The Democrats always seem to come together on important issues and votes. Why can’t the Republicans find a position on issues to get their members together before negotiations begin, so they have some leverage in dealing with the other side ?? We PRAY that sometime soon the Republican House members, Republican Senate Members, and the new President Elect, take office they get in a room and PRAY about how they can come together and be leaders in this time of total uncertainty that the Republic needs.

The chaos surrounding this bill was due to 4 people who cooked it up behind closed doors. McConnell Schumer Jeffries and Johnson, tried to ram thru the first bill, which was a parting gift for Biden’s administration. It was loaded with progressive’s dream projects at taxpayers expense. Passing that bill would have stymied Trump’s first 2 years in office. I sure wish the GOP knew how to govern, every time they get the opportunity they blow it! Bunch of self serving idiots!

I will not pray the part of the prayer regarding the “shutdown”. Whoever wrote this is acting out of fear, which is not of God. Additionally, our government is spending us into oblivion, which is where our prayer focus should be. The government could have done without the money, nothing critical would have happened. This is a reaction to fearmongering. Furthermore, a habit has developed that now gives us two budgets in Washington a year. How many households get two budgets a year?

But please notice that it was Trump who wanted to add ‘removing the debt ceiling.’ He has big plans that require a lot of money to be spent. He has no plans in place for removing debt which is why some are worried.

• $500K for a DEI zoo
• $400K for a group to give clothes to teens to help them hide their gender.

Was all of this planned? Was the ‘entire CR” debate planned ahead of time? What just happened? The American people just to a “PREVIEW” of what is coming.
How do you remove corruption in Congress? How do you give the power back to the people?
Congress did what they’ve done for years now. Congress waited till the last minute to push a CR through both Houses of Congress, knowing that the pressure of time, could be used to force many members to go along with the boondoggle spending in order to avoid blame for a government shutdown. It has always worked in the past without fail.
So, how do you stop this in the future? How do you prevent Congress from hiding in a backroom and negotiating in secret, then forcing all members to vote on massive wasteful spending at the last minute without reading the bill or knowing what is in it?
Our legislatures voted in a raise for themselves from $174,000 to $243,000 per year. They are offered an opt-out from being required to use Obamacare, while people are loosing their homes and jobs.

Lord, you are the only one that can change things with the people that are running our government! I ask you to speak to every single person and speak to them in the night in the day give them wisdom and understanding and convict them to do what’s right and just For our country and that they would be honest and just. we need our wonderful Jehovah Elohim Yeshua / Jesus in control with our leaders .we ask you Lord to Rain your word over them and help them make the right decisions .
To my mind it’s “business as usual” which is a sad commentary on the devastated condition of our government. I’m embarrassed to call it “our” government because it it is run by special interest groups and selfish office holders who don’t care about doing what is right and just. I’m taking a “wait and see” attitude going forward and will continue to pray for renewal and reformation.

Cut the billions to govt employees and students
I’m very disappointed that we continue to spend money we don’t have. Continuing to spend way more money than is taken in for another three months is very irresponsible. Giving President Biden another 100 billion to spend makes no sense. Where did that number even come from? Also, where’s the offset in other areas to make it financially sound? Looks to me that Republicans are nothing but Democrat lites. Johnson has and is a big disappointment.
To be fair to Speaker Johnson, politics is quite often the art of being presented with a sandwich made of canine effluence and deciding which end you’re going to eat first. Republicans don’t yet have a strong majority in the House as of yet and still have to deal with a vociferous anti-Trump media plus a deluded public, among them members of my own family, who believe that government’s job is to provide welfare and entitlement programs. And Christians who somehow seen it as Godly to vote for such programs.
