One New Jersey mayor suggested that the drones hovering over the U.S. may be searching his state for lost nuclear material, a theory we covered in an article posted on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Senate is arguing over how best to respond to these drone sightings.

From Daily Caller. Belleville, New Jersey, Mayor Michael Melham connected a string of mysterious drone sightings to a report of a radioactive shipment that went missing earlier in December.

Melham said the drones have been hovering over critical infrastructure and residential areas in his state for at least four weeks, suggesting that their grid-like flying patterns indicate they are searching for something specific.

“We know very little,” Melham told the hosts of Good Day New York on Tuesday.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) confirmed in an event report Friday that a Ge-68 pin source shipped by New Jersey‘s Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) went missing from the Port of Newark on Dec. 2. Melham said the materials were lost in transit. …

The NRC classifies Ge-68, a radioactive isotope of Germanium, as a “Less than Cat 3” material, which the NRC describes as “very unlikely to cause permanent injury to individuals or contain a very small amount of radioactive material that would not cause any permanent injury,” though it can still be hazardous to humans. …

The mayor said he believes the drones are most likely owned by the U.S. government.

“I want them to be clear with us,” he said. …

From The Hill. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Wednesday blocked an effort by Senate Democrats to pass legislation to authorize and provide resources to state and local authorities to track mysterious drones that have been sighted over New Jersey, New York and other states.

Paul argued the bill would have expanded the government’s surveillance powers and downplayed concerns that the drones pose a threat to the public.

“This body must not rush to grant sweeping surveillance powers without proper consideration and debate by the committees of jurisdiction,” said Paul …

He said the federal government already has the authority to investigate and stop drones …

Paul noted federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, have stated the drones do not pose a national security risk nor a public safety concern.

The bill sponsored by Senate Homeland Security Committee Chair Gary Peters (D-Mich.) and backed by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) would have allowed local law enforcement agencies to work more closely with the Defense Department and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to track the drones. …
